Striding Edge, Swirral Edge & Catstye Cam THE CLASSIC HELVELLYN HORSESHOE (The Lake District)
GPX Download Of Route...
drive.google.com/file/d/1pTf1eizcHufSba3QtnJGoXC6rsq_Td41/view?usp=drivesdk
Helvellyn is the third-highest point both in England and in the Lake District, and access to Helvellyn is easier than to the two higher peaks of Scafell Pike and Scafell. The scenery includes three deep glacial coves and two sharp-topped ridges on the eastern side (Striding Edge and Swirral Edge). Helvellyn was one of the earliest fells to prove popular with walkers and explorers; beginning especially in the later 18th century. Among the early visitors to Helvellyn were the poets Samuel Taylor Coleridge and William Wordsworth, both of whom lived nearby at one period. Many routes up the mountain are possible so that it may be approached from all directions.
However, traversing the mountain is not without dangers; over the last two hundred years there have been a number of fatalities. The artist Charles Gough is more famous for his death on Striding Edge in 1805 than for what he achieved in his life. Among many human feats upon the mountain, one of the strangest was the landing and take-off of a small aeroplane on the summit in 1926.
The top of Helvellyn is a broad plateau, trending roughly from north-west to south-east for about a kilometre between Lower Man and the start of Striding Edge. Throughout this distance it remains more than 900 m (3,000 ft) high. To the west the ground drops gently at first but then more steeply down to Thirlmere, while on the eastern side three deep glacial coves, each backed by high cliffs, are separated by two spectacular sharp ridges or arêtes. The middle of these coves contains Red Tarn.
The north-east ridge is known as Swirral Edge, a sharp arête which joins the summit ridge at a point half-way along, and which terminates in the shapely pyramid of Catstye Cam.
Striding Edge begins at Hole-in-the-Wall and then stretches for over 1.5 km (1 mi) to the Helvellyn summit plateau. This starting point is accessible from both Glenridding and Patterdale. Hole-in-the-Wall used to be a prominent gap in the stone wall on the top of the ridge where a gate was missing.
Today the gap has been filled in and a ladder stile crosses the wall. From here the initial part of the ridge is relatively rounded and has a solid path running along the right-hand side.
This changes upon reaching High Spying How, the highest point on the ridge - 863 m (2,831 ft).
At this point a narrow path continues close to the top of the ridge, which becomes increasingly narrow, and scramblers will often follow the very top of the arête.
The path on the right-hand side continues until near the end of the ridge where it switches over to the left-hand side. Scramblers who continue on the top of the ridge are forced to descend an awkward short gully down from the final rock tower to rejoin the path. At this point the ridge connects with the main Helvellyn massif. Reaching the summit plateau involves a steep walk or scramble up about 80 m (260 ft) of rough rocky terrain, known as The Abyss by W. A. Poucher, author of a popular series of mountain guide books between 1940 and the late 1960s.From the top of this climb the summit is only 200 m (220 yd) away.
Swirral Edge offers a shorter but equally exciting scramble along a similar sharp arête. The main path to it comes up from Red Tarn, which is linked by a surprisingly level path to Hole-in-the-Wall, making this ridge equally accessible from Patterdale as from Glenridding. The ridge walk can be extended to include the summit of Catstye Cam.
The climb up or down from the summit plateau onto Swirral Edge is another well known accident spot. In winter it involves climbing down another snow cornice onto steep icy ground. There have been a number of accidents at this spot in recent years, making it as dangerous as Striding Edge.
Swirral Edge, and this narrow ridge curves gracefully down and then back up over half a mile, terminating at Catstye Cam.
Taking on the classic mountain shape of a pyramid, Catstye Cam draws the eye in any view where the overtopping bulk of Helvellyn is hidden behind. As Wainwright said "If Catstycam stood alone, remote from its fellows, it would be one of the finest peaks in Lakeland. It has nearly, but not quite, the perfect mountain form with true simplicity in its soaring lines, and a small pointed top, a real summit that falls away on all sides".
Even with the connection to Helvellyn, Catstye Cam still has a prominence of over 200 feet (60 m) due to the pronounced bow of Swirral Edge.

Super video Andy and one of my favourite hikes. I love Lantys Tarn. I didnt know it existed until I was on a fell run years ago when we went from one valley to the other. A pleasant surprise. Billy was brilliant negotiating the descent of Swirral Edge. No easy path down there. Love how he takes everything in his stride and no fuss. Cheers Andy and Billy, have a great weekend

Another great day out on one of Lakelands classics. Brilliant views. That boy Billy of yours is a right old rock hopper, just keeps going. Done that route a few times and had a fantastic one a couple of December's ago in perfect blue skies, frost and ice. Dunno why, but I always think Swirral Edge is more difficult than Striding Edge. Maybe it's because I've always come down it rather than up. Yep, steep and slippery. Keep up the good work. Cheers, Ozzy.

Cheers Ozzy and your 100% correct Swirral Edge is definitely more difficult than Striding Edge especially in winter when both ridges become alpine then the walk/scramble turns into a full on technical winter mountain climb. Thanks for watching buddy very much appreciated 😊 Tek care stay safe ATVB Andy and The ROCK STAR ⭐ 🙏🏻

Enjoyed that Andrew, all your videos are a pleasure to watch. Not an ascent route for me though, I don't mind steep but not on slippery slate or grass! I did once go up Southerndale and climb up to Carlside Col which was OK. Keep at it, as you say in the video 'use it or lose it', that's my motto 🙂

By the way, I may have missed them but, have you done the Northern Fells( Brae fell, Longlands, Little sca fell etc). Lovely and quiet. Apologies if you have already explored them ... Another belter Andy and Billy. That looks an interesting route up Skiddaw - we've been up the Ullock Pike, Carl Side route a number of times but haven't been up that way. Looks a tough old climb. How about doing a Yewbarrow vid from the Over Beck car park. We haven't done Yewbarrow yet and would like to see what the route is like to the side of Bell Rib. Keep up the amazing work, guys. Amazing video. Thank you for sharing. I was wondering if there’s a giant horseshoe route to/from Eskdale taking in Scafell, Scafell pike, broad & ill crags, bow fell, crinkle crags. I reckon it would be 18/20 ish miles, but the elevation would be about 6-7000 feet. Don’t worry, I’m not requesting it. But I rarely see sca fell and Scafell pike from eskdale and it looks wonderful looking down into it from the top.

Cracking video of a really tough circuit. Great reminder. I've been that way once and my knees still remember it! Lovely colours at the minute with the heather, so the drone footage was superb. And worth carrying that piano up there for the solo partway up the ridge! And good of the choir to meet you on Ullock Pike with Billy's drum! LOL As for suggestions, I really like being reminded of new routes to try - you know the fells so well that you've often come up with completey fresh routes up familiar fells (not necessarily difficult ones), or ones off the beaten track, that make me think, I must try those. I've walked the fells for 40 years and it's so nice to be inspired to try new routes. And I also really enjoy your Scottish and Dales jaunts too.
