Solo missions in New Zealand - A fly fishing wonderland.

- This movie follows Hans Kreuer and Myself (Mike Kirkpatrick) as we find locations to hunt large brown trout on testing backcountry missions. We share our thoughts on what makes the South Island so special in what is a fly fishing wonderland.
We do it solo with one of us fishing for extended periods and the other capturing the moments on camera.

Great production here Mike, amazing serenity, music, and story of a fly fishing wonderland. I enjoyed the footage of the prep work that is required for anglers, hanz fly tying was a fine example. He's got enough materials there to have his own shop, hehe. Just a heads up, I put some money into your PayPal account with a note so you know who it was from. It's just a kind gesture from me to acknowledge the hard work you put in to make these films and the fact you uploaded it to CZcams, I would always put a donation in for your films. I highly recommend anyone else who watches these videos to do so..
Thanks so much for your continued support and generosity Tristan! You know the work and gear costs involved in creating content good enough to turn a few heads. Hopefully a few more kindred spirits follow your lead (a few already have) which keeps me inspired to strap the pack on and do it again. Thanks again mate. Legend.
@mikefsher No worries, mate. Long may it continue.
as the great hans says "thats just good fun mate"
He indeed says that! 😂
awesome fly fishing in paradise ....no further comment ..... 🖤🖤🖤🤘🏻🤘🏻🤘🏻👌🏻👌🏻👌🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻please more from this 😍😍
greetings from switzerland
Cheers and thanks for watching
Great video man. Those eat shots with the music just makes ya neck hairs tingle. really hard watching this from my office desk
So glad you liked it! Thanks for the kind words buddy
Those big fish taken on a dry fly really tickled my fancy! I'm not saying fishing nymphs is wrong or less skilful than dry-fly, it isn't, just that the visual component really hits the spot with me, whether it be a salmon coming to a hitch fly, a sea trout bow waving after a wake fly across a smooth moonlit glide or a brownie rising to a perfectly presented dry, to my mind, fishing doesn't get much better than that. A film up to your usual high standard Mike, well done!
Thanks so much buddy! Actually all things considered, nymph fishing (particularly sight fished no indicator stuff) is more challenging than most dry fly scenarios. I do agree that seeing that big head elevating and breaking the surface is hard to beat. Cheers
Great video. Loved the insight into fly tying from Hans at the start.
Cheers yeah a little vice work adds some variety and context.
@@mikefsher absolutely. It's definitely an interesting aspect to it all.
Mike,
That’s was a sensational video mate. Well done.
Thanks so much buddy
superb
Another awesome one Mike
Cheers Manny!
Mike I have to say this video is the warmest, tranquil fly fishing video I've ever seen. It takes me into another heavenly world without politics and corruption filled news. Bless you my brother and please make more like this.
So humbled to read your kind comments and I'll be doing my best! Thank you
Another day in paradise 🤩
Thanks Mike, for bringing those magic moments to the screen.
From Big streamers, to tiny Ant, with the same rod(?)...
That, is mastering fly fishing!!! 👍👏 Maestro 🎉🥇💥
Thanks so much for your kind words. It’s fun throwing different stuff about for sure!
Paradise! ❤
Lovely filming and footage Mike, as per usual. Glad I stayed in this Friday night and watched this instead of Jaws for the umpteenth time!
A perfect reminder of why we fish with the fly and why NZ rivers are boundless in their beauty.
Thanks and totally agree! Cheers
Flying ants have saved the day a few times for me, lovely watch as always 👌👌
Cheers buddy, yeah the fish can get very locked into them at times
So good to see a video from you Mike! And do believe I spy an Abel Reel. True works of Art and some of the finest reels on the Planet built here in Colorado.
Cheers mate and I hope you enjoy it!
Great video men! Loved it. Nice to see that you are still alive and kicking Hans.😊 Met you and Peter on the Wangapeka in 2017. You invited me to join ye on the river. Very gracious of you. I gave ye a lift back to your car. An Irish bloke!
Cheers mate. I'll pass that onto him
@@mikefsher Thanks Mike. Tell him that I will get around to sending him those flies I promised him. Life is slower here in Ireland than in NZ even.🤣
@@padraigcostello8499 I'll do that!
Stunning as always Mike!
Cheers mate! So much appreciated
Your videos are the best in the world Mike. Love this one! 🔥
Wow big praise! Humbled by that and so pleased you enjoyed it!
Hi Mike, many thanks for producing a video that tells the reason why I love fishing in New Zealand. As you said, you may not catch fish every time but you get so much spiritual pleasure and peace in just being on the river. The nights are like a dream and some places you come to are like a studio set from Jurassic Park! I have fished the Log Pool on Lake Okataina at night with the mist coming over the water, I was the only human on the water, eyes of the wallabies shining at me in the bush behind me, all I I needed was for a Maori war come out of the mist and I could have been on a film set! Oh, the fishing was really good as well, what a bonus. i travelled the South Island for a year, fishing, hunting and living off the land. What paradise, I am 85 and all I can think of is my next planed weeks fishing next month. Beautiful video, good footage and well told. Cheers mate. Harera
Thanks for the kind words, certainly the fishing can take a backseat at times. Tight lines!
A masterpiece. Everything a fly fishing should be plus more. Mikes net has seen some very honourable service
Thanks mate, humbling words indeed and speaks to why I do them. Peoples enjoyment.
Nice video 👍 Greetings from Indonesia 🙏🇮🇩👉🔔
Awesome video as always Mike!
It’s been a great pleasure to fish with both yourself and Hans.
Next level experience and education.
The little things I learnt on the first trip with you helped me immensely on my trip with Hans.
I’ll be back again sir!
Thanks it’ll be our pleasure!
Easily one of the best Producers of quality fly fishing material PERIOD!! I stay pretty busy but when I'm not, I'm watching this stuff on CZcams. It's nice being able to watch exactly what I want! Incredible fish beautiful scenery skilled Anglers!! Super cool thanks Mike it was worth the wait!👍✌️
Totally humbled buddy. A heartfelt thanks
Great video, one of the best I have ever seen ...love every min of it
the music is so relaxing too..thx u
Glad you enjoyed it
Outstanding everything...
Thanks!
Dear Mike, thank you for this very inspirational video. Among the many excellent videos coming from NZ, this one makes me want to book a flight a get to the South Island. My fishing buddies returning from there repeat your closing remarks in one ore the other form. The however, add one sentence to the very end: "One the 7th day, God made New Zealand".
While fishing long leaders appears to be a must in NZ, it doesn't hurt to do the same in my European home waters. In addition, my NZ experienced fishing buddies all give me one and the same advice: start getting experience with these long leaders back home. To have a memorable experience in NZ, do not assume you will be able to learn a specific technique while being there, and don't get confused by all of these loverly videos - the fishing is technical and demands a high level of skill. Therefore, I laid my eyes on a Scott Centric 1004 or a Winston Air 2 964. Now watching your video, I do see that you're fishing a 10 ft Scott Centric. Can you let me know wether this is a #4 or #5. Hans is fishing a Winston Air 2 #4, can you confirm that it is a 9.6 ft?
With best regards from the river Isar in upper Bavaria and all the best to you, Hans and Alex
Thanks so much for your kind remarks. It’s a great place to live, breathe and fish.
The Centric I was using was the 905 and Hans was using mostly his 5wt Air 2 - also 9ft. There is a massive difference between those rods though with the Scott being a very fast and quite stiff rod compared to the Winston at the opposite end of the scale being light, medium action and subtle.
Since filming this however, we’ve both joined Guideline as brand ambassadors and the Guideline rods sit beautifully in the middle. They are as good as I’ve used and I’ve sold my Scotts. Try them, you’ll love the GL Tactical and NT11 models - amazing
This was the best fly fishing video I’ve ever watched, well done!! You guys really show your passion for the sport, I love it!!
A heartfelt thank you for such high praise! It’s very humbling to receive such a response and I’m stoked you liked it! Tight lines!
Another great film 🙏🏻👌
Cheers matey - glad you liked it!
Great review.
Hi Mike, the best wishses to you and Nans from Switzerland. And greet Hans Kreuer from us. We had three great days with him on the west coast in January.
Thanks Peter! will do and cheers for watching!
My son emigrated to New Zealand from Scotland just last Wednesday. I miss him terribly already. I’m in my sixties and have an ongoing health problem that means I can’t fly for the foreseeable future. I fished a lot, this year especially, and watching your video gave me a wonderful picture of your country. I’m dreaming of course, but one day maybe I’ll be well enough to visit my laddie, and who knows, maybe catch one of those beautiful brownies and have the joy of the release (my favourite part of fishing). Thanks.
Thanks so much for your kind comments and hopefully the stars align that you can indeed visit our amazing country.
Simply stunning.. the fishing and videography 👏👌.. what an advert for your country.. you guys should be on commission with the New Zealand Tourist Board!
That’s what I think!! 😆 cheers mate
Wow, what a place with truly magnificent fishing just a bonus in my opinion - great video guys. loved it!!!
Couldn’t agree more and thanks so much for watching
The production of these videos is unreal kinda like Hooked UK but a lot more professionally produced. Thank you 🙏

Awesome trout fishing trip Mike, great video and footage, thumbs up and tight lines,, Tony.

As always Mike your fly fishing videos have a visual depth that others don’t have I think out of most of the ones that are shown on CZcams without names I think I could pick your videos a different class.
Glad you like them buddy! Cheers as, always
The best films on line anywhere, super camera work
Thanks so much for the kind words! Humbled.

You're most welcome!
Great filming, you captured some fantastic dry-fly takes!
Cheers buddy! How’s things? You still come out to NZ?
@@mikefsher yes Mike, in fact just been there but hardly had any fishing opportunities unfortunately! Btw, your filming and editing quality are really great these days, sure beats the hell out of the usual Go-Ro wide angle, can’t-see-anything stuff that is so common on youtube these days.

Great film as always Mike.
Thanks for watching!!
i'm gonna go fishing, just for the shoot, and catch 17 trout of a lifetime, of an average angler.
Cheers for watching
Just WOW!
Mike!
Been way too long since one of your videos, but I could only imagine how much work it takes to produce a production of this quality. NO ONE does it like you guys!! Watched this in 4K on my big screen in my living room. Cheers and thank you mate. Tight lines.
You’re most welcome and thanks for some very high praise indeed!
Cheers from the States, thanks for producing and posting another excellent video. Your work continues to get better and better.
Thanks mate for your very kind words! It's a labour of love and with the hours involved - i'd better be getting better!
Superb photography!
Thanks so much! Was a fun project to make.
I did not know trout can grow this big. most seatrout in scandinavia is 1/2 the size. must be reaaaly good food chain OR it's all C&R in these areas and tickets must be something like 200$ a day, to keep the pressure down.
They’re big mostly cause of a great water temp range that allows them to feed for long periods
Superb footage as always! Some of those dry fly takes were immense!! I found it very satisfying in a way that you guys struggle just like the rest of us less talented anglers in terms of emptying the fly box and sometimes it's a #18 beetle, but the next day it's a Kelly Galloup style streamer 🙂In a way you're fortunate to be sight fishing a lot of the time, but here in Ireland its mostly blind fishing due to the peat stained water unless fish are rising. I dream of fishing in New Zealand at some point in my lifetime not just for the fish, but the scenery is like paradise! Tight lines guys 🎣
thanks mate! the struggle is real! Blind fishing has it's own appeal but give me the visual game any day...
There is nothing and nowhere comparable to this in the world
Thank you. It's a special place indeed.
You bet mate, I am from Europe and I watch this with amazed eyes!
Can't beat that🔥🔥🔥🎣🙏❤

Absolutely some of the best fly-fishing..good video's

awesome!
Thanks!
i had the same thing happen this season we were throwing tiny nymphs and dries at a big fish in the backcountry but then gave up and swinged a big dungeon fly infront of his face and he smashed it and ive picked up quite a few big browns now doing the same thing. such a looked over technique.
Yep it’s not necessarily a last resort but can be a one and done…
Incredible. Hans "complains" about 4 pound trout. I guess he got used to NZ too much. Where I'm from, 4 pounders are considered trophy fish. Question aside from that: Is it safe for trout to be handled with gloves on? I was taught it messes with their skin which in turn was said to make them susceptible for all kinds of deseases.
Cheers! I’m not sure Hans “complains” about four pound trout at all… on the contrary, he mentions that 8lb or 4lb it’s all the same to him.
Yes it’s certainly safe for trout to be handled with wet gloves here in NZ. There is evidence from the US for example where there are many many more trout per km where certain bacteria can infect trout in spots where there has been human contact (gloves or bare hands) but here in NZ we never see those effects due to the clean bacteria free water.
@@mikefsher You're right. Complaining was the wrong expression. I was referring to how he compared NZ trout with the ones he had come across before. It's simply incredible. Why do the fish grow so big there?
@@tomaszsikora8221 mostly water quality and temperature. The water temps are never too cold or seldom too warm for trout to feed. Mostly stable environments help too…
@@mikefsher It's gonna take a while, but at some point I'll make it there! Wait for my call! 😁
@@tomaszsikora8221 I'll be here buddy...
Amazing video! If I had to choose one place to be based in the South Island for fishing, where would that be?

Thanks so much! It's a Sony A7siii and this was both the Sony GM 24-70 2.8 and the amazing Tamron 35-150 f2-2.8
@mikefsher o wow amazing. I have rhe exact same lenses and camera haven't had too much time using it yet really need my girlfriend to film or myself filming someone or find a good camera dude.
@@reeloutdoorscanada yeah its a bit of a puzzle working out how to make it work...
Anyone know what scott rods mike is fishing in terms of model and weight. And also tge winston hans is fishing. Unreal video. Heart breaking to be watching it in ireland at the closing of 2023 season. It will be a long winter
I was using either a Centric 905 or Radian 905 with Hans using a Winston Air 905 mostly i think. We both have switched to Guideline as we feel the rods are superior and more evolved with better feel. Check out the NT11 and Tactical series of rods - UNREAL!!
Well that was a bit special.Any chance of some enlightenment on tackle and tippet ?
Cheers, 5wt rods and a heap of different flies…

Question : leggings are waterproof? What brand?
Cheers!🎣
I was using Skins compression leggings here but now use Backcountry Skinz. Contact Nans (wife) @ nans@southernlatitudeguides.com for more details
Which winston is it on the movie ?
Not sure Air 2 905 I think…
Great video, but a real damn shame about the sets of 2 adverts that interrupt it literally every 2 minutes
Sorry to hear you had a bad experience. Should I make videos like this that take hundreds of hours of filming and editing and make no money so you aren't inconvenienced too much...
Plus you can choose to pay for ad free CZcams.
Describe your wading gear?
Comfortable?! 😜 We are the NZ distributiors for Backcountry Skinz, which are thin neoprene and awesome. Failing that I normally wear compression style leggings
Awesome cinematography. If I could just provide one friendly and loving suggestion: please take out the music in the background so we can just hear the natural sounds of nature and the water running in the river. In my opinion, too many videos these days I have music playing while there is fishing and it takes away from the natural ambience of nature. I actually stopped watching the video because I got tired of hearing that background music, artificial noise. Again, you make fantastic videos. I’m just trying to give you some feedback as somebody who watches your videos, and tripping on trout.
Cheers for the kind and well chosen words. If you've seen a lot of my other videos, they are certainly along the lines you mention with the audio recordered included in the production. It then comes down to making some content that is stylistically different, like this. Keeping it fresh and enjoyable to make while taking on the challenge of film production. There are many many anglers who love this movie and the style in which it's delivered. So the bottom line is I make what I like and if folks like it then fantastic. As the the old saying goes, you can please some of the people all of the time, all of the people some of the time but never all of the people all of the time... Hopefully you find something that resonates with you.
Who follows now because taco reacts ?
