  • Times are changing: Antique Victorian oil lamps are seeing a resurgence in interest…could it be due to the energy crisis? People are now looking at alternative sources of energy and lighting. A byproduct of this is the new interest in antique candle sticks and oil lamps. Not only do these items offer you a degree of Independence, but also great enjoyment in the using.
Here’s Vincent Page from Antiques On High in Bowness in the English Lake District to tell us more and show a super example of a late Victorian, Art Nouveau, circa 1890 oil lamp…it’s fully restored and ready to use

I still have a tiny antique oil lamp. Used to have a few oil lamps. Love the way they burn. If I could find a restored one like that I’d buy it. No leave his shirt alone…lol

Pretty reasonable price. Nice duplex lamp. When you burn it the wick ends must adjust down below the burner dome, or the lamp will will smoke and stink. Also, then the snuffers will actually snuff out the wicks. I don't know why your insurance company would care if you lit it. They are actually very safe to burn IF you know what you are doing. I burn mine all the time in the house of a fall/winter evening.

I recently, and totally out of the blue developed a fascination with old oil lamps, found one at a tip for 3 quid, cleaned it and serviced everything. Two months later I've rescued brazed & fixed another, got another to fix that's been buried 50 years, and parted together another 5 😂
It hurts my heart when I find them desecrated with electricity. The Barn in long Marston has three that would be worth 150 a piece, with holes drilled through them 😑

    That's a spectacular lamp!
My uncle lived in an old settlement called Newburyport, Massachusetts and he had numerous antique items . He owned a healthcare home for the elderly and some of the residents sokd him items. My uncle gave me a stunning oil lamp, silver base, with a beautiful crystal shade. I've never seen anything like it, its usual and quite magnificent. Christie's Auctions come to Ontario every few years, and I hope to take it there and get an appraisal.
    Fabulous video, thank you. xx

How lovely. These things often have great connections to people long gone. Using them like generations did before is a little like time travel

    Have fire extinguishers close by.
Paraffin/lamp oil not kerosene, gas or other.
Wicks must be trimmed and chimneys cleaned daily.
Keep out of reach of children and away from play areas (thrown toys, bumped tables, pulled tablecloths).
Weight the base with bags of rice especially for ones like this with a high centre of gravity.

It certainly isn't to save cost with lamp oil going from $21 and up per gallon. Batteries for LED are reasonable, store for 10 years, and a pack for $15 to $20 will give hundreds of hours and the light will be completely portable.
