Oh thank goodness for curtain calls. The magic of Jonas Kaufmann and Anja Harteros together is that they are totally believable. I got so absorbed in the plot and that awful guillotine scene that the tears were rolling down my face. And that's just watching the dvd. I was so relieved when he appeared for the curtain call! 😅❤

La splendide musique de Umberto Giordano n'était-elle déjà pas assez évocatrice pour décrire l'injuste condanation à mort de André Chénier?...Fallait-il que l'on voit en plus d'une guillotine sur scéne, la décapitation de ce poéte emblématique de la révolution française ?...Bien qu'il s'agisse d'un opéra vériste, je doute que cette décapitation soit vraiment indispensable...Bien sur, ce nest que mon humble avis...Anja Harteros et Jonas Kaufmann, magnifiques vocalement, sont tout au long de l'opéra, et surtout dans cette scéne finale, tout a fait bouleversants.

Non si può assistere a questa scena senza avere le lacrime agli occhi. Meravigliosa musica di Giordano e questi stupendi interpreti che rendono così bene il tragico momento di amore e morte. Commovente davvero!

Very nice production, up to date without being hyper-severe and self-indulgent of the scene designer. A little too graphic for my tastes but otherwise very compelling and kept me engaged. This I would have happily paid money to see. Kaufmann and Harteros make very believable lovers and have wonderful voices. Bravi.

Interesting set/direction I like it for the most part, but wonder if it is just a bit "too" busy Not sure she wouldn't faint at just seeing her lover's head cut off---and at such close quarters! And cut off by Batman's Joker at that.....

Kaufmann n'est pas Corelli, et la limite de ses moyens est dépassée. Idem Harteros, qui n'est pas Tebaldi. Alors pourquoi cela fonctionne aussi bien ? Parce qu'ils sont les personnages, parce que la mise en scène crue traduit toute l'abyme de la Terreur. Parce que la musique est envoutante et vous prend à la gorge, servie par de formidables interprètes. Du grand opéra tout simplement, sans délire abstrait ou réinterprétation scabreuse ou prétentieuse. Bravo.

Incredibly over the top music; but we all need to go over the top sometimes! Kaufmann and Harteros have such exceptional voices, and here their acting is fantastic; the production is so much more realistic than the Covent Garden one, where everybody is immaculately clean and well turned out. The only big regret I have with this clip is that both singers, but particularly her, get so involved with the drama that they are badly out with the orchestra. This weakens the drama rather than enhancing it. Being a gentleman I would have thought that he would have let her go first!!

Totally agree. Watch Caballé & Carreras at the Met Centennial Gala. It's another level, musicianship, timbre, singing style, EVERYTHING. Jan: No need for talking about armchair specialist, bla, bla, bla ... Just LISTEN. Everybody has ears, being at the Academy, at the armchair, at the sofa, etc. By the way: awful production, full of people distracting from what is a DUET. But moves the Economy, giving a little share of money for everybody, understandable. Even a little copyright share for DC Comics ... LOL.

Kaufman all thick sounding woolly would describe it perfectly I honestly can't see the attraction both del Monaco and corelli were light years a head of him the great Gigli was also very good in fact most tenors of the last 60 or 70 years were better.its not I don't like him I've just heard so many sing this role better

Tutti i due molto sinceri, pero .... Kaufmann ingolato, Harteros - non si capisce in che lingua canta, ambidue - stile sbagliato , in piu - troppa gente dintorno - questa e una scena intima , un' espressione intima di amore supremo - non m'interessanno les trouvailles del Signor Stolzl. Finalmente - Omer ! senti un po i vecchi direttori e cantanti di questo stile per imparare il vero rubato del Verismo. Altrimenti , sei abbastanza bravo.
Scusate la battuta ma cosa ci faceva Joker li??? Non sapevo che durante il periodo francese i boia usassero truccarsi da clown psicopatici. Manca Batman. Minuto 6:56, è uguale a Joker fatto da Heath Ledger😂😂😂 Ah ho capito: quello non era Andrea Chenier ma Batman e lei Batgirl (la vendetta di Joker) Che idiozia che è diventata l’opera, il risultato di un modernismo decadente, deludente e anche sporco.

This Opera requires a flexible, effortless voice and perfect diction. Due to his throaty voice technique (Voce ingolata), his perfomance isn't as good as many other Tenors. For this Opera i prefer Tenors like Franco Corelli, Mario del Monaco, Placido Domingo, Marcelo Alvarez, Giovanni Martinelli, Aureliano Pertile.
His Performance looks a bit stressed and I missed the effortlessness in his singing and acting ! I think, Jonas Kaufmann has passed his zenith.

Kaufmann è meno ingolato del solito, ora bisogna che fraseggi bene le vocali senza scurirle artificiosamente. E' così difficile la pronuncia chiara e completa delle vocali? Poi al crecere di tonalità il suono si raccoglie naturalmente..... come la "a" della Harteros in "amante". Bhè si sa che le donne cantano bene e meglio degli uomini.Troppe cose dovremmo imparare da loro...!

Overacting in a silly production.The singers are overestimated. JK and Ah are not compareble to the great Corelli Del Monaco Tebaldi Cerquetti.And the lovely Antonietta Stella.Today opera performances are terrible.

Aberrantes la dirección de escena y la escenografía. El ARTE sugiere... y no dice ni muestra explícitamente lo innecesario. Más grotesco, imposible, y levantar para mostrar al pueblo/público la "cabeza"... ¡el colmo! La realidad es una cosa, pero el A R T E... es o debería ser OTRA. Un desperdicio para estos protagonistas. Y haber tenido que terminar este aria tan íntima, profunda y trascendente no a solas sino en medio de la multitud desaforada, fue un error del réggiseur. También fueron muy exagerados los gestos de Kaufmann cuando aún estaban solos en la prisión. "Chénier" asumió su muerte con grandeza y dignidad, no así: desesperado. Lo menos ES MÁS. Grotesco, obsceno. Lamentable. Un desperdicio.
