    It's funny how everyone called this game a GOW clone back in the day, but now if you look at the 2018 GOW series its design took a lot of inspiration from Darksiders. The pseudo Metroidvania world with zeldaesque dungeons is straight from darksiders. Hell some of the puzzles involving these exploding balls are directly lifted from darksiders.

I understand that most viewers here don't actually hang out on Mayo's Onlyfans but he has mentioned more than once in different streams over there that his parents were killed in an unsolved murder by a group of puzzles. Mayo has managed to put most of his life back together but he can't get the closure to move on 100% because of those missing pieces in his Life. It's also in his autobiography titled Eat, Play, Quit (now available in audiobook format). Anyway I hope this clears stuff up regarding the distaste for puzzle.

    Darksiders 2 goes all in on the Zelda dungeon design. If you enjoy the level design, puzzles, and exploration of DS1 then you will love DS2. DS2 has the best puzzle integration of the series but the game is too long and overstays its welcome by the end.
    Now DS3 is where the combat peaked for the trilogy. It is by far the deepest, most challenging, and most rewarding combat in the franchise. It is lighter on the puzzles and the level design is more straightforward.

    War isn't the most exciting character, but that's actually something that kind of gets integrated into the narrative of the franchise as a whole.
    He's loyal, blunt and in his own way, maybe a bit naive.
    In Genesis (a spin-off where you play as him and Strife) he's used as the straight man act to make Strife's comedy shine a bit.
    Generally, the horsemen all have different personalities.
    War: Very little personality. Stern, angry and somber.
    Death: Impatient, incredibly sassy at times, a bit rude, but not generally uncaring.
    Fury: Quite arrogant, very rude, needlessly condescending, all that possibly because of feelings of inadequacy towards the other horsemen.
    Strife: A jokester who won't miss out on any opportunities to make a witty remark. Not as unwaveringly loyal as War and more prone to question his directives. More empathic than the other horsemen. Has feelings of remorse about something in his past he's not willing to talk about.

    • @jurtheorc8117
      @jurtheorc8117 Před 16 dny

      War has his wit, diplomacy and honor that do shine through. Like when the Phantom General says "You have killed many of my warriors" and War replies "i have yet to find a warrior among you."
      Or with Samael: "War... are you here to play executioner? They should have sent all four of you."
      "Has prison made you a coward, Samael?"
      And *especially* with the Abyssal Gladiator.
      First, the Gladiator mocks War for being shorter than he thought, then says "let's see how you fare, HORSEman, with only two legs to carry you."
      To which War says
      "You can look me in the eye when I kill you."
      When War punches the Gladiator off Ruin, the Gladiator loses his sword... but War kicks it back.
      And when it's time for the execution, in a beautiful flowing motion he hacks off the Gladiator's legs, both at once. Followed up by impaling him on Chaoseater... and holding the Gladiator at eye height.
      War returned the Gladiator's mockery through action, not words, *and* made good on his promise.
      Generally when interacting with characters like the Wardens, Ulthane, Azrael and even Uriel and Samael, fighting isn't the first thing that's on War's mind. That's where he has his moments of diplomacy and simply hearing other people out.
      War's got reason to be moody and brooding, but he does not forget his intellect and knows how to get things done.
      I like him.

    About the main character moving to slow, I have a similar problem with Dark Souls. Some levels are soooo big and my character is moving sooo slow, especially in Anor Londo, the Crstal Cave, Izalith. My first time in Dark Souls, I didn't mind it so much because I was amazed by the level design, but the more I play it the more annoying it becomes. It's probably even worse in Dark Souls since in Darksiders at least you respawn fairly close to where you die. Although the problem may be not the player movement speed but rather the immense amount of distance you have travel to get where you want. In Horror games movement usually is slow too, but you don't feel it so much because the levels are more compact.
    By the way, since you like old style fps, I was curious to know your opinion on the good old Turok games, those that were released on N64., since know they are all remastered and ported on pc (except Rage Wars, but that was all about multiplayer anyway). I enjoyed them a lot more than Doom, especially the first game thanks to the more organic and large-scale level design, compared to cubic corridors and rooms in Doom. I also liked that there is no fall damage, you could fall ten miles down and be okay (if there was any surface below to land on).

    I'll give you some of that. The health system was botched, The open esq areas were a little too large and the bosses are definitely nothing special. Design wise, they're good. But they just don't provide that level of challenge and balance. I honestly think the devs wanted to make their version of GOW without making it a GOW clone and in this case, I would've taken a GOW clone looking back at it. But I didn't think Darksiders was inherently a bad game. If anything, I felt satisfied that I plat it (Plat = Platinumed). I do remember when I played it through, it did get me thinking that the traveling through wormhole to cut back on backtracking reminded me of how 2018 GOW played. And then I was like why couldn't GOW 2018 be like Darksiders. You'd still have the traversal and platforming options, the combo counter is still there, and it has way better bosses. Now I'll be clear and say that I still like the newer GOW games. But I'll admit it has more faults than the older games. The bosses are a mixed bag, There's so many walkie talkie segments. In fact the 2018 game started out very slow in the first two hours. It gradually got better. But it wasn't until you retrieve the Blades of Chaos that it becomes the game at its peak. I still enjoy the new games. But I won't lie. I felt like some things were missing. So I can't say I was disappointed with the new direction they took. I was expecting the play style to be very different and it was.
    Ragnarok did improve on some things like the bosses and you still had a little more traversal options. But it still proplexes me that they didn't have platforming. With what improvements they had, they also made things worse. Like you, I wasn't a fan of Atreus and the fact that you had to play as him in some areas Was salt to the wound. I can only compare him to one character I have complete distain for. And that's Steve Burnside from RE Code Veronica. Yeah. That bad. Okay maybe he's not as annoying. But I'd still want to play the Ghost of Sparta of this pimp squeak. GOW Ragnarok was okay. I personally wouldn't mind them taking my favorite series in a different direction. But that's the thing though and it's like what one of my other favorite channels said, by changing things to improve them or thinking you're improving them, you're going to get the ire of diehard fans and it becomes a question of well was this the right decision to make or not. I honestly believe that's what it boils down to.
    Darksiders though could've been a perfect template for the new direction for GOW. But they wanted it to be a big budget movie with gameplay in between. The problem is they just didn't find a good balance and I think that's why you and to some extent, me didn't like everything about The new games. But you tell me what you think Mayo. I'd like some feedback.

      And this game is SO God of war. The combat is nearly identical. The feel of attacks, the executions and xp system, the magic system, the tone, the platforming and the style of puzzles. I'm sure there's plenty of Zelda in there too but it's not wrong to call this a gow clone.

    Hello dear Mayo... Good Points, i subscribe to that out of my own Experience; I bought DS in 2010 and over the last "Oh my" 14 Years I tried to finish the game every 2 years'ish... I played the Warmastered Edition... for 12 Hours... only to bury the game at last in my pile of Shame on Steam... same goes for Snarksiders 2 DE and Dorksiders Generals... these games start so strong only to fumble, drop the Ball... (in my Opinion)

      🤣🤣🤣That part alone RIGHT before the end made my friends and almost me to quit the game. I like to tell you try 3 but it's waaay different and difficult. Too much dark soulsy. Don't want to write you long essay but it's actually the game with style switching and unlike other 2 you don't waste time on menus for item management and weapon switch so for me it wasn't as boring as souls games despite what others might say but you die way too fast and easy even on lowest difficulty with upgrades (which are pretty meaningless)

    darksiders 1 is truly my favorite game. But I can see your point of view and agree that this is not the game for you. I suggest you play Darksiders 2, it's way bigger, it has the health system you like, the ability to make different builds, and the number of puzzles is relevant to the fighting. I like Darksiders 1 more cuz it's a smaller game. It's good to see an honest review.

    • @underthemayo
      @underthemayo  Před 13 dny

      It's not that it's "not the game for me". There's a lot I liked about it. I'm glad I played it. The structure near the end is not for me, and from what I've seen that's not controversial. But i think the game truly would have been better without such a forgiving health/checkpoint system.
