      Correct, NTSC versions of old games were often harder than their original Japanese counterparts, that includes many Capcom games such as the original Resident Evil which was also made harder in the NTSC non-Director's Cut version.
      In the case of DMC1, the NTSC PS2 version is harder with a 20% buff in damage and health of enemies. HD Collection is based on the Japanese PS2 release

    The game actually has an easy mode but it has to be unlocked, so it's the total opposite of DMC5. If I remember correctly you have to die 3 times in the first level, if that happens the game will ask you if you want to switch to easy automatic. But this mode is really only for more casual players or players who don't like a challenge, the automatic part means you can just mash buttons and the game will automatically do combos.

    Sometimes a reason not to pick up a game can be as simple as ''This doesn't appeal to me aesthetically or in terms of setup.''
    I'm not the type who demands ultra-realistic graphics and all the fancy new trends, I just have my tastes I guess. And DMC's look and setup doesn't appeal to me all that much.
    I think I will try DMC one day, and it actually does look nicer in this video than I thought, but this doesn't seem to be talked much among les essayists. We're all going to gravitate towards certain vibes eminating from games, and mechanics will not play a part in that initial feeling.

    I'd be interested in hearing your thoughts on Onimusha which is also a hack-n-slash that came out close around that time too - since a combat bug in that game apparently inspired DMC's gameplay direction (and Onimusha itself was originally going to be a samurai spinoff of Resident Evil). It's both simpler and shorter than DMC, but it's got fixed cameras, some action horror vibes, and is rather strict with resources - so maybe you'll get something out of it.

      Not only that his comment on aiming the Divekick being harder due to camera is so dumb cause if you're locked on to a target and they're relatively stable, not moving all over the room then it's a non issue (also why would anyone go for a divekick when someone's that mobile anyway cmon use some sense). Sadly, Nightmare 3 made him gave up on the game then he just spammed items to get it over with and move on. No surprise there as that puzzle boss usually is a pain until the player figures em out but that is a tall order to ask of newcomers so ballsy game design there risking the final impressions of the entire game with that boss and the genre shift afterwards with the final boss.

    The neat thing about DMC1 compared to the later games is its much more of a combat puzzle. Each encounter can only have one enemy type and certain equipment and strategies work better against certain enemies. Marionettes? Grenade rolling. Death Scissors/Scythes? Helm Breaker. Frosts/Nobodies? Inferno. It's similar to how Ratchet and Clank (2002) compares to its sequels.

DMC1 does a great job with wide shots - one of my favorites is the Mundus statue in the main hall towering over Dante during the daytime that becomes eerily empty at night. Great to here some praise for the camera system. Way too many people outrigth dismiss it as outdated, while it has some annoying moments (like mission 15's Griffon fight), it doesn't get in the way all that often and creates unique atmosphere through cinematic shots.
    Another thing about thing about DMC1, while it's a game that started gaming franchise all about style, it's not stylish action game. It's very much focused on efficiency. The style rank doesn't rate you based on variety of your moves like in later DMCs, rather it's more of chain - you can get it just by using one move or using specific moves. The key to maintaining it by agression, not style. Same thing with the ranking system at the end of the missions. You're rated based on time, red orbs, damage, so you're encouraged to play optimally, not stylishly. Note: items penalize your score, but it's still possible to get an S rank if you've meet all requirements.
    That's where the coolness factor of the game comes from. It's not about making long and elaborate combos, but about overcoming difficult challenges as quickly and cleanly as possible.

    • @LeonardoStupidKenway

      @ship05u Před 2 měsíci +2

      OG DMC is designed in a way that allows freedom of Playstyle to shine regardless if you're a Stylish type, Optimal/Efficient type or a mix. DMC1's Ranking system (end of mission ranks I mean by that) works DOES NOT prioritize towards time which means it is absolutely possible for Style players to go beyond the required time requirement and still get the highest rank at the end of the mission (Note highest rank being S and not special bonus cause special bonus is just that.. a bonus & not a rank). Also OG DMC's ranking system is probably the least imposing or restrictive one in the series outside of DmC cause that game really doesn't give a single fuck about anything so anything goes which is something that high level players could at least appreciate.
      The way it works is also pretty genius as like you mention the three parameters of Time vs Damage vs Orbs (+ Item usage penalty). If a player satisfies any TWO out of those three primary requirements then they'd get S. That is why Style players can get still get S even if they don't make it in time as long as they either take very little damage or No Damage it entirely depending on the mission. Efficient players on the other hand can get S just by rushing through missions without much care for Style and still get a S for their efforts as well as long as they satisfy either the ORB or the Damage aspect.
      The game very clearly pushes more towards Style because of how the Orbs requirement work. It is generally much more easier to meet the orb requirement if you're doing well in combat in other words killing enemies at A or S which itself pushes player to go for that S on the Style meter for the moment to moment play. That being said it's still possible to not meet the orb requirement and just go for Time & Damage and still get that S.
      Regarding Style meter, It is both aggression based and variety based. The Style meter absolutely rewards varying up the attacks so I don't know why you'd even think that..Plus Taunting works to maintain meter from disappearing, same with using charged moves so it is very clear that one does not need to always be up in the enemy face or always be attacking to maintain the meter. Again OG DMC just allows more agency to whichever way a player chooses to go about it. Reaching S on Style meter can be as simple as turning on DT then just shooting repeatedly with EnI. Style meter overall throughout the series is very flawed and very EASILY exploitable once you know how it works so this isn't a shot towards OG DMC. The main purpose of that Style meter is to push newcomers towards approaching combat with variety in mind and for that I'd say across the entries in the DMC IP, it's sufficient but do realize that there's a reason why players after a certain point of play stop giving a shit about that meter entirely along with the mission rankings.
      Both the end of mission rankings and the Style meter have never been and probably never will be an accurate indication of how good a player truly is.

    • @Paul_Allens_Profile
      @Paul_Allens_Profile Před 2 měsíci +1

      @@ship05u DMC1's ranking requirements shouldn't be looked as checklist. You get an S rank by reaching certain points threshold. It's not a very strict system, categories are rather means to earn enough points for the rank, not fixed goals in themselves.
      Playing stylishly is entirely up to a player's choice, because the game formally doesn't recognize style - it doesn't have any style points upon which player is judged. Style rank doesn't encourage, nor force move variety. The opposite is true, you can gain S rank during combat just by charging pistols, so in fact it encourages effective strats.
      There is variety of moves, but they don't serve the purpose of player expression. They're tools with their own utilities. Style is more of a byproduct of numbers of opitons that players have.
      Scoring ofc is its own challenge separate from beating the game. Still, there isn't big disconnect between it and playing well, as taking no dmg and playing efficiently are hallmarks of skill.

    The end of mission rankings vastly change the amount of orbs you get, and depend on things like time, damage taken, items used and special missions done. Doing special missions can offset some damage or time loss IIRC. Getting < A really slows your pace of obtaining items and skills. Conversely, playing perfectly nets you a Special Bonus, which nets you 2000 red orbs on top of the S Rank bonus, which is 800 (early game) to 3000 (M23). Hitting even one or two can really help expand your moveset or health/DT

I had only been a fan for a year by the time DMC5 came out...but having played all the previous games over and over before its release just changed my experience with it, compared to it being my first. Although, I also thought DMC5 was easy when I first played it too. I just assumed I was just mad skilled.

      Oh I can't even imagine how EASY Dmc5's starting difficult is gonna feel now that Ive gone through DMC3! And yeah, newcomer perspective is important despite what some think. Games need to grow their audiences. Many new people need to come to sequels or they'll fail financially.

      To be fair, there is *one* use for Round Trip where it works really well: Mundus 2 in DMD.
      Charge it and toss the blade while you use the shotgun (the best gun for Mundus 2), and you get lots of DT easily. When on DT, replace shotgun blasts with three fireballs+one charged fireball, and you do really solid DPS without risking much damage.
      It is *one* use, but it vastly surpasses DMC3's Drive, where there's literally zero circumstances to use it beyond style because of how slow it is.

    That's some bullshit, dude. We all know Devil May Cry is just a retooled Vampire Hunter D game Capcom had to salvage after loosing the rights at the last minute. Funnily enough, DMC2 also had to reuse elements from a scrapped Spawn licensed game after they fired the OG director due to budget constrains. (I guess Capcom is just shit at licensing, huh)

    Considering how much you put by things like currency and progression in these games, I figure it's a fun tidbit to mention that during some of the early missions if you go out of your way off the beaten path and trek back to the fountain room (where you fought Shadow) you can actually refight Phantom in there. And you can do it over and over again, he respawns upon reentry. You namedropped metroidvania as a style, so it kind of stands out as a special, limited 'bonus' orb grinding area.
    Also while you said the game wasn't likely to hold you over for a repeated playthrough on the higher difficulties, I find that a pity specifically because of another point you brought across. You commented on how you liked the way enemies had rather specific strategies that forced you to develop a refined approach. This gives the game a very deliberate feel, where you're not just mixing together long and whacky strings where the endgoal is to be as elaborate as possible, it's about surviving via the utilization of a more limited toolset than you may be used to in later action games. When you reach DMD difficulty, this reaches a pinnacle. You really have to pay attention to every encounter you don't flee from. You have to always have a plan, and that plan MUST be considered in reference to the different enemy tactics you face. You admitted to not bothering with Ifrit and just lazily hanging in the air with air raid. And yknow... I get it. When I was kid I picked up Ifrit and hated it because 'wow I'm not used to this'. I didn't like the idea of straying outside a comfort zone, and the air raid seemed fine anyway. But then you hit DMD and that thinking just doesn't cut it anymore because Ifrit is just too damn important for killing things fast. So you either hit a wall or adapt to it.
    Still mad to this day Sparda doesn't at least have air hike though. And right after that cutscene too....

      He did mention he'd be playing it on the flawed but much more accessible HD collection version of DMC3SE. Also there's not that much differences in both vanilla 3 and 3SE overall outside of features 3SE adds and slightly improving upon the JC frames. Also there's some enemy wave differences on DMD but still very minor. If you're speaking about normal mode difficulty then yeah I'd agree as 3SE normal is much more easier than vanilla 3 BUT only for the NA version of vanilla 3 as the rest of the world it's mostly the same. Even then vanilla 3s NA version normal is just 3SE 'Hard' mode so if he really wanted to then he can go check that out after 3SE normal playthrough by doing a NG for Hard and see for the differences though I highly doubt he would be spending that much time with any DMC game beyond the initial playthrough.

Essentially if this wasn't DMC, it'll be a very interesting survival horror title. Basically its design started mainly what we all know and love about hack n slash, the things further DMC titles improved upon and God of War understood correctly, the reason why they're cousin franchises. What is going to be really interesting about watching Mayo react to Devil May Cry 2 was because DMC2 was a formative experience in turning me into a "challenge matters" kind of player. Because when I played DMC1 back in the day, while I LOVED it, at the time, I felt like the difficulty only existed to pointlessly make the game longer. If it were easier, I would have finished it in an afternoon, but since you could easily get your ass kicked, it actually took me a whole weekend to clear it.
    DMC2 re-implements everything from DMC1 so poorly that it forced me to become more critical and understand on a deeper level why DMC1 was actually fun. Making the game way easier was one of the many reasons DMC2 failed so hard, to the point where I might have welcomed the over correction that was DMC3 a bit more than if it had been the second game, tripling down on younger me's nitpick.

    • @Zetact_
      @Zetact_ Před 2 měsíci +1

      3 is usually recommended as the first game for someone getting into DMC because it's aged far better than DMC1. I absolutely love DMC1 and think that people who say it has "aged like milk" are just wrong but it does have some elements that might give someone the wrong impression about the franchise that it eventually moved past. The controls in 1 are a bit stiff, Dante's moveset is a lot more limited, swapping between weapons is super clunky, there's no level select feature, and Itsuno cared way more about making a strong story than Kamiya ever has (not a knock against Kamiya, his design philosophy is just way more arcade-oriented).
      Basically the only thing in DMC3 that has arguably not aged well is the lack of Freestyle mode that would become the series' standard but that's a case of "the new systems introduced in the game were refined later." You might say that there are a lot of annoying enemies but honestly games like DMC1 and 5 having few to no annoying enemies are exceptions rather than the rule, usually hack and slash games with any good amount of enemy variety have a couple that are just annoying.
      3 is simply way more palatable for most people and gives better context on what the franchise is, since honestly it's more Itsuno's franchise than Kamiya's.

      @@Zetact_ There's either very few to no annoying enemies in both DMC4 and DmC. DMC2 hate it or tolerate it also have no annoying enemies either (the bosses are different story lol). 3s Enemy design on lesser demons (bosses overall goes for quantity over quality too but I'm mostly talking about lesser demons here) is horrendous across the scale with only saving grace being the scythe wielding types that the game also is very aware of as it constantly is shoving one of those type of demons at the player on regular intervals at least on the normal mode in hopes that the player doesn't notice the other horrible enemy types too much. That illusion goes away very quickly if one plays 3SE on harder difficulties esp DMD past the mission 03. There's a reason why you'd see most Style players only be fighting Sloths in their showcases. Most players playing and dipping after the initial normal playthrough is actually working in favour for DMC3SE.
      So I'd say that DMC3 is the exception in the IP when it comes to enemy design that's actually not very fun to play against or with at large unfortunately. THAT is what ages DMC3 the most along with the part that games that came after it simply expanded on it's ideas in very different ways to the point people had to mod in Style Switcher to it to keep it somewhat relevant in terms of gameplay.
      That all being said DMC3 or 3SE is still a very good and fun game with a high skill ceiling. It is quite expressive for the players as well just that if only the enemy design of that game didn't hold it back from reaching further heights.

      As someone who has watched Mayo's content ... DMC1 is the game I would predict he would enjoy the most because it is the most "traditional survival horror-like" of the franchise. You can still feel some of the classic Resident Evil influence on it, which is absolutely gone later in the series.

    Funny enough, my first introduction was DMC 2 and i absolutely loved Dante's version and got confused at the second character you could play. I think once i was able to unlock Trish's character to play instead of the other woman, it made the game enjoyable. Absolutely loved part 3 and i think i unlocked everything, same with part 2, but never played the original. Part 4 annoyed me because i had to play with Nero first and then Danta and for some odd reason, annoyed me, because i only wanted to play as Dante, same with DMC 5. Part 5 felt like it was hand holding and the enjoyment of the game went out the window, and i slowly stopped playing it.

    Oh, so you _were_ gifted DMC 5. I was so confused about that 'cause you kept changing the story-like how in your Does Style Matter video, you said you _bought_ the game, but in the comments you said you _gifted_ a copy.
