And here I am, an immigrant from the South, who lived in a cardboard hut through years of my childhood now watching this video and thanking my parents for all of the love they gave us, for raising us to be respectful and value life...to have goals and have ambition, there is no need for prison, juvenile detention, post prison reform when there is good and proper parenting. If you can’t do that, you have no good reason to have children until you can nurture care and educate your child...if we all did that, this world would cure itself of criminals and there would be no need to label them for their crimes. If you can’t appreciate the label, then don’t commit the crime. Let’s do our part by mentoring these kids to help them become success stories instead of another number in prison.

I will say that he is partly correct. MS-13's roots do lay in the Salvadoran Civil War. During the 1980s, the FMLN fought against the right-wing Salvadoran government, who was supported by the Reagan White House. I wouldn't necessarily say it was the entire U.S. government supporting all these right-wing death squads. Remember, at this time, you had the Contras fighting the Sandinistas in Nicaragua and the at the same time, the Guatemalan Civil War was also raging. The White House at the time just saw Latin American lighting up as a pinball machine with Communist uprisings everywhere. In reality, it was the people just tired of being ruled by brutal, right-wing military dictatorships, supported by the U.S., all in the name of sticking it to the Soviet Union and preventing another Cuba from happening. While some may come with the argument that the U.S. was helping these "freedom fighters", in reality, they were helping prop up these brutal repressive military regimes in most cases. The Contras in Nicaragua were brutal, blood thirsty sons of bitches. Massacres of entire villages would occur if they believed that innocent poor peasants supported the Sandinistas. In El Salvador, the right-wing death squads perpetrated so many massacres it is hard to keep count. I once heard a recording of a "military" commander talking about how when they got to a village to look for "subversives", how they proceeded to teach the villagers a lesson. They took all the men and boys to the local watering hole and machine-gunned them to death. Then they took the women and raped them all...."pichirri" is the word he used, which means anally raping the peasant women. Then they shot them all too....all because they were peasants and the death squad believed they were giving support to the rebels. One could ask, why in the fuck would the Salvadorans rise up against their government? Well, when you brutal, military governments suppressing you since the early 1930s, and more than 90% of the arable land in the country owned by 14 families, it makes you wonder. Situations like this gave rise to movements all across Latin America during the 1970s and 1980s....it was no different in Nicaragua with the Sandinistas, and during the Guatemalan Civil War. The history of U.S. intervention in Latin America dates back to the late 19th century and it hasn't exactly been a pretty one. If you are skeptical of this, read up on the Banana Wars, the United Fruit Company (Chiquita Brands), the Invasion and Occupation of the Dominican Republic & Haiti in 1916, Augusto Sandino, Farabundo Marti, Guatemalan president Jacobo Arbenz...overthrown by U.S. intelligence in Operation PBSuccess, Anastasio Somoza and Anastasio Somoza DeBayle. By the way, that last part connects to other topics as Rick "Freeway" Ross, Danilo Blandon, the Contras, Oliver North, Guadalajara Cartel, Enrique "Kiki" Camarena (yes, Narcos), Gary Webb, and the Crack Cocaine Epidemic.

However, from my understanding, the "13", for example, didnt get added to the name for the reasons he stated. Yes, the "13" stands for the letter M, which is the 13th letter in the alphabet. But the number was added at some point in the early 90s, just like most Hispanic gangs in Southern California. The number 13 stands for the letter M, which is also an homage to La Eme, aka the Mexican Mafia. All Hispanic gangs in So Cal who operate in Eme controlled territory have to pay homage and taxes to La Eme. Mara Salvatrucha 13 answers to the Mexican Mafia, just like Florencia 13, and others that answer to them. In the early 90s, when many high ranking members of La Eme were paroled into the streets, they began consolidating thier power in many of these neighborhoods where Hispanic gangs operated. La Eme put a stop to all the drive-by shootings n stuff and organized all the gangs. They would answer to the Mafia and charge taxes to anyone selling drugs in their territories. If any gangmember violated any of the rules put forth by the Mafia, then whenever said gangmember became incarcerated, he would be dealt with swiftly by La Eme behind bars. At least that s the way I understood many years ago.
