Zoom problem in Canon zoom lens EF 24-70 1:2.8L II USM

- This Canon zoom lens EF 24-70 1:2.8L II USM, has been dropped on the floor and then the zoom did not work anymore. But it was "easy" to fix, just take off the bajonet and then the circuit board (take care of the flex cable's)
Then take off the rubber on the zoom ring, and lift up the sticky tape on the thin metal plate.
Set a mark where the encoder brush sit correct, then unscrew the brush.
Unscrew the 2 screws that hold's the connection pin from the zoom ring and take out the zoom ring.
Gently draw the front part of the lens, so the back lens group will go into the lens body, now you can see the "fork" that is the connection from the zoom ring.

I love this so much thank you. Recently fell down during my trip to Japan and was distraught that the zoom had issues. Managed to find this video and ordered a spare zoom ring online and it's as good as new!
I have the same issue after dropped on the floor, actually it's not necesary to open the lens to repair this issue, I just force twist the lens to 24mm position and heard a click inside the lense, then it fixed with 3 seconds, job done.

I dropped my camera and realized the lens was not zooming after that..found your video, followed all steps but the screws on the metal piece that you lift were just destroyed and there was no way to remove them, so I took a chance and carefully lifted the metal part while zooming back in and it came back into place and now my lens is fixed!! 🙏🏻 thanks so much for the very resourceful video!!

Helped me in the process of repairing a 24-70 mk1. There was a piece of hard plastic, maybe tape, lodged in the zoom barrel.
did that make your zoom ring hard ?

Mine fell to the floor last night from 1 meter high and now it won't zoom in, only zoom back out to the wide angle, I have to push with my hand to zoom in. I'm almost crying, but this video gave me hope. I live very far away from repair shops, I'm going to try to disassemble it myself. I bought it used and almost didn't use it because it was expensive and heavy, I was taking pictures from the lens using my cellphone to sell it in my bed. A girl sent me a message, I went for it and while I was distracted the lens fell to the ground. Now I have to repair it to sell it. Man, I'm feeling like shit, I wish I had never bought it. I will try after work, it seems simple enough, and I have experience repairing things myself, although I know nothing about lenses. You are really helping people out there.

05:39 - It would be better to keep the front cap on during the repair so you don't risk scratching the front element when there are metal objects on the table.

I have the same lens with the same problem, and didn't even know about until I bought a new flash and wondered why the flash was only showing 28mm to 70mm. I don't remember dropping the lens either, but it is what it is I guess. The question now is am I brave enough to attempt the repair?

if canon didnt put threadlocker i dont see any reason doing so afterwards either. its not likely the screws will vibrate loose or so(well i dont really know what people do with their lenses but i guess most are pretty careful with them) :D

My copy of the lens has a slight play when turning the zoom ring. It moves maybe about a millimeter before the barrel extends or retracts. Do you think it is related to the two screws on the 'fork' piece being loose?
do you know the name of that piece you remove at 19:50? I need to replace that in my camera bc it broke and I'm having trouble finding it

i have a problem with the zoom ring, it gets hard going from 50 to 70, but it gets the job done, the thing is that i dont know if i should take the lens to get fixed or this problem is something that its caused by time/use.
just to have the zoom smooth all the way from 24 to 70 instead of this hard ring, hope i describe it correctly.

I have exactly the same issue on one I just picked up. Perfectly smooth focus ring and zoom between 24-50 and then gets stiff (actually sounds like it's rubbing) from 50-70 when turned slow...

Hello Mike, I'm so glad to find your video, it gives hope !!!! I just dropped my Canon ef-s 17-55mm f/2.8 which i bought in 2012. Same problem...will it be the same to fix as the EF 24-70 ?

@@atobuk Oh you seem to have more info than me. Do you mean there is more to be dissembled in terms of parts or other there other circuitry or more complex elements which require a good knowledge? I'm a total layperson so can only follow the Mike's video
@@gooseberry1970 I’m not sure about the circuitry but simply comparing the lens in this video with the 17-55, the zoom ring on the 17-55 is in a different position that would require more disassembly in order to reach it and troubleshoot.

They’re not quite the same on the inside but the process is pretty much the same. It’s a little harder to see inside once it’s apart

The two screws that attach the zoom slide (seen at 12:42 of video) have stripped. Do you know where I could get new screws replacement?

Hi Mikeno, I'm having a problem with a Canon 16-35 f2.8 lens. AF is not working correctly, it hunts for focus constantly. I can see it's in focus but it keeps trying. On the dial I can see it moves 2mm to the left and then 2mm to the right, and it keeps doing that. Camera wont even take a photo because it thinks it is out of focus. Is there a help for it or what?
Hi Sanel, I’m not sure, but I would guess it’s the same problem that happen in other Canon lenses. I think it’s the optical parts of the autofocus system that, over tome, going to be dirty, or getting out of alignment if the lens has been dropped or something like that. I have seen that in the 17-85 lens and make some videos about it. If you make search on the net, you hopefully will find more info about the problem.
@@mikeno62 thanks for the answer, and you were right. I have sent it to the repair shop and they fixed it. It was the focus sensor that got dirty and could not lock on focus. Works like new now.
