I was just awestruck hearing Thiagarajan speak. True he has a doctrate from Havard University if I am not mistaken, but he has taken me by surprise. @@truthmaker700 I have traveled to TN quite a few times to my credit and have met several nice folks, who usually got flipped (impressed) hearing anyone speaking fluent English (preferably with a foreign accent). I've experimented with few many people talking absolute nonsense but using fancy words, that was received with instant acceptance and even appreciation. I am Indian very much but have lived in US and UK, traveled to India often times. My original comment is only a productive criticism, that its ok to say "I don't know" or "I don't understand" but that seldom happens in most parts of India, especially in TN.
Tamils who take pride in Tamil language usually are BAD in pronouncing Tamil words but take pride in their spoken English, like the Minister in the video. His Tamil apparently is the worst (among rest of the minsters) but people still justify that his English is too good -- so thats ok. I find all this little too much paradoxical to deal with.
Mr. Palanivel is currently finance minister of Tamil Nadu India but this person should be a finance minister of whole india by his knowledge, courage, effort and experience surely he will succeed his goal for India by God Grace...love you sir..may God bless with all success and we will support you when required mr. I may not subscribe to his political line, but he spoke very well and successfully argued his case. Rarely we see politicians interact in intellectual discussions, but Dr Thyagarajan made a wonderful exception. I am very happy to congratulate him for the wonderfully articulated speach.

Raj Does Not Live...appears to be apparent to most listeners. Some of us
who were born a few years before 1947,
and were fortunate to study in some of the best education institutes/institutions in euphoric India of 1940- 1990,would find it a moral dishonesty to state that the British Raj did not live on for at least 50 years in India. We,of the above said generation, found doors opening on the strength of the fluency acquired by many of us in the last living apparition of the Raj...the impeccable English language.
The legendary speakers of the pre- independence era such as Pandit Nehru
Srinivasa Sastri, Netaji Subhas were listened to with awe...as the mesmerised
audiences with their thoughts..in English.
Soon after the unique division of India into language- based federal states...the political class commenced their circus.
Without an equal infrastructure to match the English education and job acquisition
process...this class of leaders went hammer and tongs to denigrate the English language for partisan greedy objectives. They dishonestly provoked the public to shun the English language
...while cunningly inculcated the same within their own broods. In a matter of two decades this class ensured that the common families of India would be perennially subservient to them and their own precious brood eternally. They succeeded in stopping the honest, loyal,hardworking, family oriented, intelligent youth of India from swimming
In the rising tide of prosperity of those crucial five decades after 1947.
The India of today and tomorrow will never be rid of the advantages of the eloquent nuances of the English language. Almost all Indians who are successful know two or more languages
...and one of them would be English. An articulate or loquacious person in English language will still find doors opening everywhere.
