Gotta say I’m kinda shocked so definitely gives me hope!
I remember my freshman year of high school watching the Pirates win the 79 World Series. I thought they would be back many more times. Wow was I wrong! This gives me hope that will be competitive for years to come.

What a collective breathe of fresh air! Every night watching the Bucs I'd say when are they gonna sign B Rey to an extension,WHEN? Well,when they finally did get it done it shows Major League baseball that the Pirates WILL contend and we're not the majors "farm team" NO MORE! Thank God! The handcuffs are off! Total shocker. All other things being equal, I expected the team to ship him off to a contender by last year's trade deadline at the very latest. The Pirates' year-on-year roster turnover is otherwise almost hard to keep up with. Of course, the team could still trade him; a long-term deal doesn't necessarily mean anything in the modern age of free agency. Contracts can be re-negotiated and simply taken over by the acquiring franchise, etc. Alternatively, however, the Reynolds' deal could signal a fundamental change in team management. It might be ready to start funding a serious competitive team instead of managing what has amounted to "the rest of the league's farm club" for the last 30 years. We can always hope, I guess. The reality is that the roster budget still ranks 24th out of 30. Something close to a .500 finish seems to have been the benchmark for success, which is pretty pathetic. I was in high school the last time the team made any real post-season noise. That was before Reagan (1979).

Reynolds to the biggest contract in Pirate history doesn't make Bob Nutting a hero. He talks about building a winner here in Pittsburgh. Should have started building a winner right after Bob Nutting's father purchased part ownership of the team approximately 17-18 years ago. I blame Bob Nutting and his father for the failures ever since he purchased the team.
This shocks me. Nutting actually spent money.
