Pro Skater to Award Winning Actor: The Jason Lee Story | Looking Back

- On today's episode of "Looking Back", we'll be exploring the career of Jason Lee (pro skater, award winning actor, photographer).
In modern times, Jason Lee is mostly known for his various acting roles (Mallrats, Chasing Amy, Almost Famous, Dogma, Enemy of the State, Vanilla Sky, My Name is Earl, The Incredibles, Alvin and the Chipmunks), but he originally made a name for himself as a professional skateboarder. Jason was one of the first amateur riders for Steve Rocco's company SMA Rocco Division, and eventually World Industries. Jason made an even bigger name for himself on Blind Skateboards as a professional rider, eventually leaving to start Blue Skateboards with Chris Pastras (which turned into Stereo Skateboards). From there, he entered the world of acting through various music videos (Sonic Youth, Redd Kross), and eventually met director Kevin Smith (Clerks, Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back). Kevin cast Jason as Brodie Bruce in Mallrats, and the rest was history.

... ✋👀
You forgot to mention his role as Coach Frank in Skate 3, best character in the Skate franchise next to Reda.
I've atoned for my sin, made a Coach Frank video a few months back: czcams.com/video/ES3zTmGof7U/video.html
Coach frank the man
Oh shit now I understand
He played coach frank in all skate games.
@@Heavymetalstonie420 Just skate 3, Coach Frank wasn’t in 1 or 2.
I never knew he was a skater! Makes sense why he was put into skate 3 now. Love him as an actor! Can’t even remember how many times I re watched my name is earl.
Poser.
Bro my thoughts exactly! Skate 3 tho. Tssss 👍🔥
Coach Frank!
I still am watching them
He was also in Tony Hawk's Project 8!
Man I had no idea he'd been a pro before his acting career kicked off, nevermind how central he was to the stories of some the skate companies I first identified with in the early 00's. Excellent work
Not many people were aware, glad I could share this info - thank you!
Basically the opposite here. Many years later I realized that he got into acting
When I played Tony Hawk’s Project 8 that was the first time I actually found out! I was like 7 back then and he was one of my favourite skaters back in the day
He's one of the people credited as inventing the 360 flip.
Yeah, gotta admit, Jason Lee is one of those really underrated actors that, while he's gotten credit, i think he should have gotten more because i think i've enjoyed every character he's played. This is making me want to go back and watch "Mall Rats" again.
Never realized how monumental he was in street skating holy shit
he's actually a vert skater....
@troutslapper ..... Almost all vert skaters came from the street back in the day, him and I are the same age and rode for similar companies.... I'm still skating vert to this day...
Yea it's crazy all the tie-ins into the industry he had and I never knew 🤯
I have found out that he is actually still skating too....
No Jason Lee no 360 flip!
Stereo Sounds forever
Shout out to Jason. He’s a legend!!
Isn’t he a Scientologist now or is that just the brother in the show
@@Number1FanProductions yea he’s been a Scientologist for years. They’re not all cruise crazy. I think Tom turned him out when they filmed vanilla sky
@@SubjectDelta20 lol. It would be hilarious if he were Stan lee’s kid
@@deshaundozier He pulled out of scientology in 2015 or 2016, that's why he layed low in Texas for a few years and heavily pursued photography. I didn't mention it within the video because CZcams loves to take down videos involving religious discussions.
@@deshaundozier Like he graped the dude in the butt?
For the longest time i avoided my name is earl, but when i finally watched it i was pretty bummed i didnt get into it earlier. Its such a well writen and acted show. Among the best comedy shows for sure.
Jason’s story is incredibly inspiring. Dude is wholesome, hilarious, and a great friend to those around him. He shifts focus without losing touch with those from his past and follows his passions wholeheartedly
Jason Lee is such an actor that you feel like you have known all your life but you really have no clue where you saw him first. This was really well put together and good stuff overall.
And I hate myself for having forgotten he was the voice of Syndrome. He did such a good job on that one. =)
One of the biggest crime in "TV" was cancelling My name is Earl. Great show, great characters lot's of heart.
Blessing in disguise. Americans drag TV shows on for too long until they turn to doo doo
I loved Mallrats. And I don’t care what anyone says about it. It was freaking brilliant.
Look a sailboat!
I think most people would agree.
like the back of a volkswagen?
Yeah, my brain is entirely confused that it isn’t considered Kevin Smith’s best work!
Mallrats is one of the better comedies that came out of the 90s.
Top quality content. Always loved Jason Lee
Loved Jason Lees appearance on Skate 3. He was hilarious in My name is Earl. Great Skateboarder, he’s an OG.
yeah it was good to see him in skate 3
Dude hitting nothing but net, skating, acting, business, arts. What a dude
The skateboarding crowd can be quite versatile and multitalented, or at least used to be (don't know how it is nowadays).
When critics have no clue they are watching gold before their eyes. Mallrats was and still one of the best comedys ever made.
It was definitely ahead of it's time. I remember people talking about how funny it was when I got to High School in the mid-2000s.
...despite it's roadblocks
Didn't critics also slate the shawshank redemption
@@kevmccormick1767 - No they didn't. Both Sickel and Ebert said it was one of the best films of the year and here's a link to their review. It bombed at the box office despite amazing reviews and being fantastic. No one knows why it failed but the guess is that it has a weird title and it looks slow and depressing in the trailers. Poor marketing.
czcams.com/video/D2ZtUetXlXk/video.html
It has easily Stan Lee’s best cameo
Watching My Name is Earl for the first time was an experience. Love that show.
this is so well edited and voiced over i honestly never knew Jason lee had such a diverse background. loved this
I've been a fan of Mallrats / Jason Lee for over a decade, noticed no one had made a video like this and just jumped at the opportunity. Glad you enjoyed it!
Jason Lee already being an awesome skater and starting from scratch into acting is like Jimi Hendrix if he suddenly pursued stand-up comedy. Not where you’d expect them to be, but they mastered it.
You did such an amazing job on this documentary, bro, this is such an underrated video! I loved Jason Lee growing up, so much nostalgia in 18 minutes, absolutely blew me away. Thank you, Media Pastimes, your channel deserves far more recognition!
Thank you! Jason deserves a full fledged documentary, I was surprised that no one had made a video like this before me.
@@MediaPastimes me too! I was just thinking someone should make one and came across this one, you really did a great job although definitely hope someone makes a full fledged documentary! Already subbed so I'll definitely be checking out more of your videos in the meantime.
This comment right here!!! Couldn’t have said it better myself! Great job man, I hope he sees this!
A timeless classic. Critics were blind to the brilliance.
This makes me respect him so much more I had no idea! I had heard the name Jason Lee thrown around as a skater growing up but I never made the connection. I was a 90s kid so he would've been getting out when I was maybe like 10 years old. Respect!
I met Jason Lee at "The Edge" Skatepark here in Fremantle, Australia in the very early 90's. I had no idea who he was at the time but did geek out at his fantastic skating. He was such a friendly guy and signed something for me at the time. I still follow Jason on Instagram to this day.
Glad to hear he was a nice dude, I've heard a lot of good things through this comment section from people who met him. A few people claimed he was a jerk or "a friend of theirs met him and he was a jerk", but who even knows if those people are telling the truth.
@@MediaPastimes an old Army buddy of mine met him randomly in New Orleans and said he was super nice. My buddy said he could barely speak because he was so nervous but that Jason Lee was incredibly humble, signed an autograph for him, & even shot the shit with him for a bit.
All your videos cover everything that was important to me as a kid/teen
I think a lot of us millennials had very similar upbringings when it comes to entertainment, because we didn't have as many options available to us, compared to kids of today.
@@MediaPastimes thats true. I didnt know anyone else who owned the CKY videos on VHS in my tiny town growing up though. Today we have the ability to connect with others who had similiar upbringings.
I agree brother that don’t make shit like they used to. Brings back good memories. 🍻🤙🏻
Jason Lee was one of my favorite pro skateboarders back in the day. It's been interesting to see how his career grew. Loved My Name is Earl too. Friggin hilarious show!
I think that the key to this man's success is that he exudes relaxed confidence all of the time. 5 years from now if you told me that Lee cured cancer by just walking into a lab and convincing the scientists to let him take a crack at it, I wouldn't be too shocked.
Totally fell in love with the guy (and its fantastic cast) when Earl was on, what a beautiful soul. Thanks for the video, I learnt a lot
Excellent exposé! I've been a fan of Jason Lee since I scored a copy of 'Video Days' as a skater punk back in the day... all the way over in Perth, Western Australia. It's been vicariously inspiring to follow his career over the years knowing where he came from. Great job boiling it down & putting it together with the nostalgic slant it deserved, It's clear you enjoyed putting it together.
Thanks dude, that’s the exact angle I was going for. Australia rocks - I’d like to take the 22 hour flight and visit someday.
Wooo hoooo old Perth skater here too back when the edge skatepark in Freo was the spot.... And scabs clocktower. Fuck I miss those old days
Jason is definitely a likeable dude, naturally funny. I had no idea he was a pro skater till today but the guy rips!..
He was actually credited with inventing the Tre/360 flip (a 360 shuv it mixed with a kickflip). Of course Rodney Mullen landed the trick first but he credited Lee for creating the modern tre flip
He was in a lot of skating video games I saw in video games before I saw him in movies
I never knew he was an actor till today. I still think of him mainly as a skater
@@dustyoldhat you haven't watched Alvin and the Chipmunks?
@@TwinkleNZ Never heard of it
I found out Jason was a photographer last year and he has actually released books. Pretty badass.
I thought about my name is earl the other day, then I get this in the recommended, get out of my head google, but thank you.
Solid video, very well put together. I could tell you had fun making this video. Especially the baby with the mustache lol.
That took me like 30 seconds to photoshop but I’m proud of it nonetheless, lmao. Thanks!
Jason is one of those actors who I’m not obsessed with but anytime I see his face I immediately want to watch because I love him
Jesus this video was so well put together! You really knocked it out of the park. So crazy how involved this guy was with my childhood with out even realizing it. Grew up skating starting on world industries boards and he was in several movies and ofc my name is earl.
This video was really well made! Great breakdown of both the skating and the acting parts of his career
I first saw him in Dogma and asked, "Who is this scene-stealing dude and why have I not seen him before? He is great!" And then I went down the Kevin Smith rabbit hole lol
It's crazy that so many people don't know he used to skate. Jason Lee is a legend in the skateboarding world! He was my favorite skater back in the 90's. He was so dope in the old Blind "Video Days" video. I had his board and his signature skate shoes. I still have one of his Stereo boards now.
@michael wright A lot of kids today don't know their skate history, that Airwalk was one of the dopest skate shoe companies at one time. I had so many OG pairs back in the early to mid 90's. That was a while before I started saving sneakers and taking care of them. All the skate shoes I bought were to skate in, and I'd buy like Nikes or Timberlands to keep nice when I wasn't skating. Looking back, there's so many pairs of skate shoes from the 90's I wish I would have saved. The Airwalks alone would be, of course, the Jason Lee, as well as the NTS, the Ones, the Jim Shoe, the Bowling Shoe, etc...
I met Jason Lee at Shut Up and Skate Contest in 1993 during the Blind Days not long after he became every street skaters hero from the Video Days Era, He was super friendly at the time and his wife even chatted with us little skate rats like she was just hanging out with the boys... So much Nostalgia I'm getting misty eyed..
Jason Lee is an absolute legend, I'm not a fan boy or anything but he's just awesome. Thanks for sharing.
My brother worked on the set of "My name is Earl", he said he was a dick, and very rude to the film crew. Sad, because I loved that show and knew of him from skateboarding.
Maybe just straightforward
Damn, Jason was such a good skater. He had style and pop in every trick. For that time he was really advanced.
A lot of people comment on this video and say “he wasn’t even that good of a skater!” But like, they need to remember that 12 year old skaters weren’t doing darkslides on telephone wires in those days. Kids are so damn good at skating now, it’s unreal. The dude had style and revolutionized a lot of tricks.
Definitely can tell you had passion in the making of this video. Had me glued till the end. Great job!!
Love Jason Lee. Always blow peoples minds when I tell them he was a pro skater
"Stealing Harvard" was the first time I came across Jason Lee, as well as Tom Green. Going back through their careers was super entertaining. I hope they feel fullfilled with where they are now because I know it brought a lot of joy into my life. I think My name is Earl really touched a lot of people in a positive way and lasted as long as it should have, furthermore seeing Tom Green with his CZcams adventures has also had the same effect.
Jason Lee just did a three hour podcast interview about skateboarding, it looks like he's doing well and he's working on some TV projects as well, so we might see him back on the screen soon
My name is Earl is an oft overlooked gem...
Dude you deserve so many more subs, and you definitely have a new one here. Excellent subject matter, very well researched, crisp sound quality and captivating editing. Well done.
Man, thanks for doing these videos on Jason. He's always been a favorite of mine.
Absolute LEGEND!!!! Great video dude. Jason was my absolute favorite skateboarder and overall role model. I remember getting video days and man that video was the soundtrack to my happier days. Not a care in the world just a skateboard and nothing but time. I just always remember feeling so proud of Jason for representing misunderstood skateboarders and “making it” in Hollywood with a resume of professional skater.
Absolutely, and it makes me even happier that him and Pastras are still running stereo together.
This was a shocker. Never in a million years would of thought Jason Lee was a skater.

@@bigfranchise shut up
He always struck me as a really cool and genuine guy. Kind of a Keanau Reeves type personality.
His biggest flaw was that he used to be a Scientologist back in the day. [Just like Will Smith is.] My man got a lot of flack from it.
I really liked this video a lot! I love Jason Lee, and Paul Rudd. Two of my favorite actors, I often get them two confused. Great sense of humor in both of them..... great video bud!
YOU KNOCKED THIS VIDEO OUT OF THE PARK!!! Great work!
I just finished watching My Name is Earl and I never knew he used to skate. That's really neat and this whole video is well done subscribed.
Making a video about the sort-of follow up to "My Name is Earl" called "Raising Hope" very soon 🤙
Being an early millennial, Mallrats was one of those iconic movies that defined the times for my generation, and I think it was too culturally relevant for critics to understand (unlike something like Dazed and Confused which was a time piece and thus something adult critics at the time could understand since they were likely teens in the 70s). Watching it back then, I knew it would be a cult classic and I didn't even know that it bombed at the box office and with critics. There was just nothing else even remotely like it, it turned the teen / early 20 something genre on its head, disposing with the lame cliches and bringing in something that felt authentic, if somewhat corny. That movie made the characters seem cool while also being hapless losers who hadn't figured their lives out at the same time, and it didn't treat comics and video games as just some side joke about nerds. Jason Lee's character was something I wanted to be but was not yet at the time: a confident guy who was comfortable in his own skin as a somewhat nerdy skater type, who was always being witty and making insightful comments. He has at least a dozen iconic lines in this film that I still love and repeat. Nobody like this had ever been made cool in a movie before, he was kinda someone to look up to in a way, an unlikely anti-hero.
I never liked My Name is Earl despite really liking Jason Lee, so that was a disappointment for me. I had high hopes after finding out that he was the star of a TV show. It is too bad he never did any other TV projects. I feel like he could have been great in an adult buddy sitcom with young adults, the sort that became popular later on like Workaholics, New Girl, It's Always Sunny, etc. Or maybe his own HBO show, where he could just let the expletives fly. He could have a been a great character in something like Silicon Valley or Californication, maybe even Shameless. I'm happy for the guy to have made a fortune on dumb voiceover stuff so he could effectively retire and move on with his life, but it's hard not to think of what could have been. He is just so good at playing a witty and likable guy who you also kinda want to punch. He always felt authentic.
Disappointing that you didn't' like it, but i get that kind of humor and thing isn't for everybody
I remember the first time ever seeing Mallrats at a friend's house and saying that he looked like a guy named Jason I used to run into at skate spots from time to time.
Great video! I had the pleasure of meeting Jason Lee a few times over the years and I can say he's such a cool guy in person too.
I remember switching from Santa Cruz (Grosso and Hosoi) to SMA from the big very boards to the slimmer street style boards. My first was the Mike Valley zoo board and I shredded the shit out of it. Never went back to the big heavier decks.
I started skateboarding in 1999 (on a not so serious level, I really got into it around 2005 or 2006), so I was lucky enough to have those really easy to skate popsicle boards. Nowadays they have even lighter popsicle shaped boards with those Powell Peralta flight series decks, it's insane how much the sport has progressed.
Mike Vallely’s barnyard board is worth a bit of money nowadays. If you still got it.
no mention of skate 3?
Jason Lee was in Skate 3... there you go.
(Coach Frank is getting his own video, working on it now 😎)
@@MediaPastimes awesome 😂 love the video man!

@@MediaPastimes Can't wait brother
I’m so glad I ran across this. I love Jason Lee and I never knew he was a skater! This made my heart smile. ☺️
Jason Lee is just legendary! Unlike most actor's, he can skate! Thanks
Wow. I was a big fan of blind boards when I started skating in the late 90s. But as time went on their boards just kinda stayed the same never innovating so I kept swapping brands. I had no idea Jason Lee was the owner back then.
God I miss 90s culture. What a time to live through. Riding my bike to school. Coming home and skating and/or playing nintendo 64 then just disappearing to a friends house without telling my parents and just showing back up around 8-9pm. The world was so much simpler back then. Then 9/11 happened. I was like 12 years old at the time. The local skatepark had opened on the 7th or 8th of that september. I remember going to school and quickly realizing something was up. A bunch of kids were going home. One kid came to school late and told me "the world train center was hit by a plane" Me being 12 couldn't understand why a train station would get hit by a plane or what a terrorist was. Anyways I only cared about one thing. The skatepark. When I got home from school I begged my parents to take me to the skatepark they tried to explain why it was a bad idea but I countered with "but that means it will be empty!" I think I got my way and went but none of my friends were there. After that things have just gone downhill. Man I'd give anything to go back and live for a couple of days in the late 90s/early 2000s.
Yep! I wasn't sheltered to bad events in the world prior to 9/11 but that was the event that changed my worldview forever.
He wasn't the owner of Blind. He was sponsored by them, and they promoted him to run the company. And then he quit after a few months. Jason Lee and Chris Pastras own Stereo Skateboards, since 1992.
Another awesome video man! Appreciate the instagram posts on the progress. Can't wait to see your videos get more recognition. The passion you had for this project is inspirational. Mallratz was great! I also just watched Chasing Amy. I found out that Joe Frantz showed up on set and was a pa. He ruined the heavy rain kissing seen by accidentally setting off an alarm lol.
Thank you! This really was a passion project, this isn’t getting a boatload of views out of the gate, I knew that while I was making it. But I heard Joe tell that story on Raab’s podcast, absolutely hilarious story.
@@MediaPastimes Never worry about the numbers man, just be patient it will come. Focus on that passion and people will catch on :) Yeaaaah dude I was watching Raabs podcast for my Bam project. Raab is such a positive guy, love that podcast.
One of my professors in undergrad met him when he was moving from skateboarding to acting. She said they talked a bunch and that he was a really good/cool person. She had no idea who he was at the time and then My Name is Earl got famous.

Cool, this was interesting to watch. Learned a ton about this guy. I honestly only knew of him from Scientology. Never seen my name is Earl. I kinda remember Alvin and the chipmunks from when my boys were kids. See, I worked so much back then (dental field) I missed everything and was never home. Never even to this day had cable tv. Lot of VHS and DVD back then tho. About ten maybe fifteen yrs ago my ex boss who is now one of my greatest friends was getting brainwashed into handing over thousands to the "church". They used this guy, Tom Cruise, Leah Remini, John Travolta ect as a marketing tool to become a high level donor. You get to hang out at the celebrity center in FL where you MIGHT run into them. I think he has since left. If so, great for him. That cult is dangerous. Woah. This brought back some crazy ass memories. YT recommends the craziest stuff to me. Any who, good video.
Yeah he's been seperated from the church since 2015, really glad he got the hell out of there.

I would have, but discussing religious topics is extremely risky on CZcams. People get their videos taken down all the time for stuff like that, I put a lot of work into this video and didn't want it to go to waste. Not only that, but the dude has been out of scientology since 2015, it's not my place to discuss his life on that personal of a level - I just wanted to cover his career as a skater/actor/photographer.

looking at your channel and watching a couple of your videos, dude you're so underrated, don't loose the hype of making videos.. there ton of famous people out that don't have documentaries.

Dude my entire life has revolved around skateboarding omg

Great Video. Mallrats was my favorite movie when I was a teenager back in the 90s; I still enjoy watching it along with Dogma.
Just picked up the Arrow Video 4K version recently, I probably revisit that movie 2-3 times a year.
