  • How To Play the Star Wars: CCG (Customizable Card Game) that was produced between 1995-2001 by Decipher Inc.
    This game was amazing and one of my favourites along with the Star Trek: CCG (also by Decipher).
    PLEASE NOTE: There is an error in this video. Apparently Attrition (during battling) is part of Battle Damage NOT in addition to Battle Damage (we used to obviously play it wrong!) Sorry!
    **This is a re-upload of an old video I recorded back in February 2015 and used to be on my channel**

    I bought these since they came out in the mid 90s with a friend. We couldn't afford to collect them all so we split the cost with a gentlemens agreement and I kept all the dark side cards and he kept the light side. So I have half a game. 25 years later he has all his cards still and we play every few years.

    I hadn't played since 2001, but my best friend and I used to play this game every week for a few years straight. I dug my old cards out of the closet recently and used this video to help teach my daughter how to play so we could enjoy it together. I really appreciate how clear you made everything, and it really helped it all come back to me.

    If you play Attack Run, you don’t have to rely on the dark side player to bring a Death Star. The light Side has a version of the death star they can bring.
    Great idea about adjusting the deck size to desired play time.

  • @christianlye-knudsen5811
    @christianlye-knudsen5811 Před 5 lety +16

    A correction: Losing a character for its forfeit value satisfies BOTH attrition and battle damage. When you forfeited the Imperial with the forfeit value of 4 to satisfy the attrition of 3, you had also satisified the battle damage of 3. Dark side did not need to lose more cards after that.

    • @rickadams
      @rickadams  Před 5 lety

      Thanks, I know I did it wrong when I filmed it years ago. Me and my mates obviously used to play it wrong! Thanks for the correction though :)

    • @christianlye-knudsen5811
      @christianlye-knudsen5811 Před 5 lety +4

      Again during the third battle: Dark side had 3 attrition and 7 battle damage to satisfy. The attrition means that out of that 7 battle damage, 3 must be satisfied by forfeiting one or more characters with a total forfeit value of at least 3. After you had forfeited the Imperial for forfeit value 3, you only had 4 more battle damage to satisfy. It's important to understand that attrition is NOT loss in addition to battle damage, it is damage that must be satisfied by forfeiting characters (even if you don't have battle damage to satisfy; it kinda simulates that even though you win a battle, you're still likely to lose soldiers on the battlefield, which is what happened to the light side in that battle).

      @@rickadams No problem. Just wanted to clear that up for anyone watching the video to learn the game. Attrition can be a hard concept of the game to wrap your head around. When Decipher made their follow-up game to Star Wars after losing the license, they actually streamlined how attrition worked a bit to make it less confusing. That game unfortunately bombed pretty much out of the gate.
      Also, another minor correction: When you replace a character with a different version, the version that was replaced goes to your Lost Pile, not into hand.
      And one final thing: Even though the game "died" when Decipher lost the license in 2001, an official Players Committee was set up to carry on the game. This committee designs and releases so-called "virtual cards" that you can download and print for free and play with. They've managed to keep this "dead" game alive for 18 years with a considerable amount of people still playing it! There are both real-life and online tournaments being played. There's currently an online tournament going on that has 80 people signed up for it! You can visit the Players Committee website at www.starwarsccg.org. I recently got back into the game after 20 years when I came across the GEMP platform ( gemp.starwarsccg.org/gemp-swccg/ ) where you can play online. It's amazing stuff.

      Another couple of considerations regarding attrition:
      Immunity of a character to attrition does not preclude you from forfeiting that character to attrition in a battle. You may voluntarily forfeit a character who has immunity to the amount of attrition during a battle. The immunity only means that you are not forced to, even if it means some of the attrition is not satisfied.
      Additionally, immunity to attrition is with respect to the total amount of attrition - not the attrition remaining after forfeiting other cards first.
      For example, if your opponent drew battle destiny of 4 in a battle, and you have two characters in that battle - one with a forfeit value of 2, and the other with a forfeit value of 3 but immunity to attrition

  • @TangFiend1
    @TangFiend1 Před 3 lety +3

    I own about 40lbs of these cards, and I view the game like Star Realms now. It's not a "CCG" anymore. there are tons of rares in the meta and game setups you could try if you have a collection.
    Hoth/Walkers game? sure
    Death Star/Xwings Trench run? sure
    Endor Fleet battle? sure
    Vader vs Luke with the introductory game . . sure
    Decipher really did come up with a top game, with your deck being your life and you could go full dark side and pull chunks of your deck into your hand.
    They certainly borrowed a lot from Wizards and Magic the Gathering. But the fact the 'battles' take place actually in the 'land' cards was genius and it changes the 'mana' output was such a cool evolution of card games back in the 90's.
    Decipher did a unique thing also, where they never made any card 'illegal' (ie Demonic Tutor) which sounds great initially, but the 'silver bullet' cards and as the meta game progressed made the rules more and more complicated and unapproachable as the sets progressed.
    It's a great card game if you just want to play it at face value.
    If you are interested in what has become of the game since the early 2k's
    www.starwarsccg.org/
    The player community (some of them I have met) Have created card sets and 'virtual' cards you can print out. They are a great, welcoming and devoted community

    I’m surprised that immunity to attrition isn’t basically a “damage absorber”. As in, if leia is immune to attrition less than 5 and the battle destiny is 1, leia can count towards fulfilling the attrition cost without being discarded, essentially absorbing up to 5. It would make sense that powerful characters would shield the others, narratively

This game is just awesome and kind of unique, never seen such a strategic gameplay with such a diversity of possibilities again, in my opinion even Magic the Gathering with its thousands of expansion sets just looks simple compared to SWCCG, and I have been an enthusiastic MTG Vintage player!
    Also the images and the card design as a whole are so beautiful, I just love it!
    SWCCG is the real shit, forget about that ugly TCG from WotC, curse LucasArts for selling the rights...
    btw I think you did a mistake in gameplay:
    22:50 dark side suffers 3 attrition and gets 3 battle damage -> forfeiting that imperial for value of 4 will satisfy both, attrition and battle damage! ;-)

I was wondering if playing with these deck themes have rules that are different from what you used in this video? Also I see that there are 3 starting cards for some theme decks as opposed to starting with just a site? And then there are epic events.

    • @rickadams
      @rickadams  Před 2 lety

      Yes there are many other rules that came out with each expansion. Hoth, for example, had specific site deployment (Markers) so they had a certain order (so the screen accuracy was maintained) and the empire can advance to the rebel base. I have done set-specific breakdowns on my channel where I touch on the extra rules (but don't go into in depth detail). The Hoth one is here: czcams.com/video/hHGKP_DKQUo/video.html

    I found my starwars cards. In middle school this game was way too complex/NOT fun to play. Now that I'm old, this game still sucks, but I don't have the heart to throw my cards in the trash where they belong.
