Just a heads up, you can use "Bartenders Friend" to clean a lot of this discoloration if it isn't super dark. I just got my bonfire mostly looking stainless steel again with a sponge, a little elbow grease and that cleaner. However, the removable ring at the top was REALLY dark and the cleaner really didn't do too much but lightened it a little bit. So I would say just use this cleaner before that bronze gets too dark. also- DONT touch your eyes when using this stuff....ooooof.

That’s fresh air (oxygen) being drawn up inside the double walls to secondary burn the smoke gas/particles from the primary burn off the wood. Works best when the walls are heated, which is why you get smoke at the beginning of the fire and there’s very little secondary airflow. If you move the initial fire/coals from the center to the walls and/or stack your wood in a ring instead of a teepee, you’ll get to smokeless and propane effect sooner. Cheers.

Ok I bought this per your recommendation, it's absolutely FANTASTIC. I was sceptical naturally, but once it gets going it's basically smokeless ~15 minutes in. So easy to start the fire!! Not difficult like a wood stove. Absolutely so happy with my purchase. Highly recommend it to people!! 🙏
These things run best when full of wood. The problem with the yukon at 30”, is that its internal bottom surface area is 2.4 times that of the Bonfire at 19.5”. It takes a lot of wood to cover the bottom and fill that volume. It looks like they kind of compensated by raising the bottom inside a little, but it will still take a lot more wood. I make these to my own design and have been much happier with the 20” design than anything larger I have built...
Burned in my bonfire for the first time the other night. I was using 2x4 cutoffs etc and initially it burned amazing with a good secondary burn. Then I had a pretty high level of ash and it seemed to choke out even though the ashes were super hot. Any thoughts on why that would be?
BmanWfd133 as it consumes the wood, it gives off less and less woodgass(yellow and blue flame) and breaks down the wood to charcoal and ash. You want a steady flame you need to slowly add wood throughout the evening. As you add more wood it should knock the ash thru and clear the holes or you can help this by stirring the coals around a bit as you add wood. When you are done burning this is how it will finish up, i usually find mine the next day with a layer of fine ash and most all the coals completely consumed...
Been wanting one of these since they came out. Finally just ordered one this week. It showed up a few days later. The packaging is over the top! It shouldn't get damaged in shipping under normal circumstances for sure. I can't wait to use it!
These Solo fire pits are pretty awesome. I have the ranger version and extremely pleased with it. Now I wish I would have gotten the larger Yukon. I've had it for 3 months and used it about twenty times. It is truly "smoke free" when it is fully loaded and the wood doesn't extend above the top of the unit. It does burn through wood fast due to how efficient it burns, so make sure you have extra wood on demand. This is one of the few expensive internet gizmos that I have purchased that was really worth the cost and as advertised.
A couple tips, you may already know, but I saw you loaded the wood about the vent holes on the top. keep the wood below the top row of holes for maximum smokeless. it takes about 15 minutes with a full load to heat up work best. You can load it up at the begging, you don't have to start small. I just mix kindling scattered through the stack and some paper. Then light it, and step back for it to heat up. The ring they sell on the bottom works pretty good. I tried the aluminum thing, but after an eight hour session it scorch through. what I have now is the bottom ring and a sheet of 3/4 plywood for it to sit on. Out has some scorch marks, but not bad. Hope the helps FYI: I have the bonfire as well. It doesn't get near as hot, but doesn't require as much wood. The heat output sucks though.

Nice video I have the bonfire bought it before the Yukon came out and man we love it everyone that’s seen it loved it as well. It really does work puts out good heat no smoke which is crazy and why so many friends and family are impressed with it. I’ve left ash in the bottom of mine for a month with no issues as well only issue is the discoloration on the outside which is not a big deal. The outside side does get very hot and will melt shoes boots etc my wife learned the hard way lol all in all it’s a great portable fire pit mine even came with a carrying case so you can take this anywhere highly recommend it cheers 🍻

I'm sure it's been said, but 'True Stainless Steel" CAN rust. It is rust resistant and that resistance is highly dependent on the grade of stainless and the carbon content. Solo Stoves uses 304 grade, which is also known as 18/8. That's 18% chromium and 8% nickel. It has a low carbon content, is non magnetic and is rated to 1600 degrees f without pitting. Your fire will probably be hotter than that but pitting is not a big deal for a fire-pit and is considered normal.

The discoloration may just be creosote buildup. I would not be surprised that some ammonia based cleaner(oven / grill cleaner) would leave the surface looking like new again. It might be heat discoloration, but from my stainless steel welding experience that color looks similar to the low end of stainless heat discoloration, but not quite the same. It very much reminds me of the color of the inside of my stainless steel smoker after a cook.
Whats your suggestion for the after party? The bonfire is too hot and smoldering once we are done. We leave it alone for the night an burnout however next day the entire area and pool deck is completely covered in Ash. To the point it cause paint damage. What do you suggest for a hot smoldering pit, waters?
this thing blows my mind. How can it be on a wooden deck and you don't have any fear? I've noticed in many videos no one has a protective layer that you have between your wooden deck and the stove. Can you tell me more about that and just how much heat (if any) is at the bottom of these things?
To be honest, I no longer use the mat. I found that the deck is fine without the mat. The reason it’s safe is because the little ring that acts as a stand for the fire pit creates an airspace between the deck and the pit. Soooo the deck never really gets hot with it.
My issue is that I smell after my built in EP Henry fire patio pit. I hate the smell and the need to shower before going to bed. So I was looking to remove the copper bowl from the EP Henry paver fire pit and inserting this 27" Yukon inside to get rid of that smoke smell. My concerns are that if it's inside a paver ring, that it wont suck air in (or enough O2) from the holes down below to create that smokeless environment.

No, you won’t need the mat if you have a stand. It really doesn’t get that hot underneath. I had bought it as an initial precaution but after a couple of years of use, I found it unnecessary.

We have pavers and then plastic grids under that. If we put the firepit on their stand that you can buy and the reflector like you have, will it heat up the paver? We have to be careful of the plastic grid system underneath the paver that could melt.
Nah, you won’t have to worry about the heat transferring to the stand too much. I have the deck protector there just for added caution from sparks and such
can anyone comment on regular fire pit Vs. the solo yukon with regards to wood consumption, if i was to take this to a camp trip, my concern would be churning through all the wood too quickly, it burns more efficiently but can you regulate how much wood use or intensity. You cannot really regulate the amount of consumption the fire pit burns. It is an insane flame from it and it seems designed that way to radiate heat out so far from it while not smogging up anyone trying to enjoy the fire. Hope that helps!

With a stand, yes it will be fine. However, never leave the fire unattended in case of a spark or crackle that could cause sparks to fly. My deck protector was just an added measure of safety.
Good review, thank you. We've been considering one of these because my wife and kids don't like smelling like smoke when using our traditional firepit and thought this may help reduce that "problem". I've seen a lot of reviews on Amazon and even in the comments here where folks are saying this firepit rusts, and fairly easily. Can you confirm or refute that? A lot of those reviews are a year or two old, so have they changed the design to try and prevent this? While I like the idea of it being "nearly" smokeless, I'll be damned if i spend $600 on a firepit that's just going to discolor and rust. I could probably live with the discoloration, but the rusting would not be acceptable. I've also heard the heat output is pretty meager compared to a "traditional" firepit, so maybe the "smokeless" design comes at a cost.
There is a slight bit of rust that has formed on the inside of the pit where the wood sits but not substantial and that is after a couple of years. the outside is still rust free and I keep it covered out on my deck when not in use. I feel it will last a decade at the least to be honest.
Easiest way is to take the top ring off, flip the unit on its side and roll to where you want to dump it. Then just gently flip it over and the ash will dump out. If you have a friend or spouse, they can help move it versus rolling it. Hope that helps!
Can you Stop the discoloration? IS there anything you can apply when it is new or after a few burns anything you can use to clean it and keep it looking new
Deciding whether to get this for our first pandemic winter. Want to be able to hang out outside with my elderly mother. Which model should we get? Think we need the Yukon or is the bonfire good enough?
The yukon will accommodate more people and cast a greater radius of warmth. The bonfire will cover a smaller radius of warmth. If you can, go for the yukon. More fire pit for your money. Look for sales on the solo stove website when Labor Day or the holidays roll in. Cheers!
The Brew-Q thanks! My concern with the Yukon is that it takes a lot of wood and a lot of effort to set up each time, it seems. So, might be something we’d only do occasionally. Bonfire might be easier. Either way, would be nice if this gets us through December at least! New England winters get cold!
304 stainless should not rust, Remember it only cost a few cents more to go first class You just cant stay as long, I had mine for about 6 months and I love it.

And ferritic (ferro = steel in latin) is magnetic and can also rust. And depending on the manufacturing process stainless steel could also magnetize for example in a rollformer or a press brake.

Honestly, I don’t get a lot of sparks from mine and I use oak wood in it. Once in a while I may get a spark but I’m usually there monitoring the fire. I have contemplated getting the shield but also haven’t seen enough justification for it. I’m doing a follow up video this winter for it. Cheers!
No issue at all. It happens but never had any problem from it. I believe they make a spark arrester for it now. Just keep a hose nearby or some water in case.
I have ordered the Yukon and except to receive it in a couple of days. Do you think it will be to large for a deck that is 12 foot wide and 60 foot long? I'm thinking I should have gone with the Bonfire but I like the looks of the large Yukon.

Yes, I have had mine on my wooden deck for the last two winters and it has posed no issues so far. Make sure you get the little ring stand for it so that air can flow under the unit and keep free of any heat buildup underneath. I have a protective mat underneath mine for further insurance. Like any fire pit, always good to keep a source of water nearby when using them anyhow. Cheers!

Even with us only having smaller sticks that we had from lots of brush trimming. I see a firewood run in the near future as well as husband building a rack to store all the wood in. But I think we'd really like to be able to put it out in the yard so we can spread out more with the chairs. Need to get one of those bases.

The way this fire pit is designed. I would not recommend it. There vent holes in the bottom that hot ash would wash out of. You’d have to make sure you doused it good and then it’s also made of steel and I dunno if that could cause any rust issues or not.
Yes. They actually make a device for hanging pots over it for cooking. Looks like a tripod with a hanging hook. I also believe there grill accessories for it. Don’t quote me but check out their site. Probably under the accessories part.

You have to flip it over to dump out the old ash. It’s not terribly heavy so it’s not been a big deal for me.

I really think you'd be ok as long as you leave a little spacing or miniscule cracks between the pavers

can anyone comment on regular fire pit Vs. the solo yukon with regards to wood consumption, if i was to take this to a camp trip, my concern would be churning through all the wood too quickly, it burns more efficiently but can you regulate how much wood use or intensity. You cannot really regulate the amount of consumption the fire pit burns. It is an insane flame from it and it seems designed that way to radiate heat out so far from it while not smogging up anyone trying to enjoy the fire. Hope that helps!

With a stand, yes it will be fine. However, never leave the fire unattended in case of a spark or crackle that could cause sparks to fly. My deck protector was just an added measure of safety.
Good review, thank you. We've been considering one of these because my wife and kids don't like smelling like smoke when using our traditional firepit and thought this may help reduce that "problem". I've seen a lot of reviews on Amazon and even in the comments here where folks are saying this firepit rusts, and fairly easily. Can you confirm or refute that? A lot of those reviews are a year or two old, so have they changed the design to try and prevent this? While I like the idea of it being "nearly" smokeless, I'll be damned if i spend $600 on a firepit that's just going to discolor and rust. I could probably live with the discoloration, but the rusting would not be acceptable. I've also heard the heat output is pretty meager compared to a "traditional" firepit, so maybe the "smokeless" design comes at a cost.
There is a slight bit of rust that has formed on the inside of the pit where the wood sits but not substantial and that is after a couple of years. the outside is still rust free and I keep it covered out on my deck when not in use. I feel it will last a decade at the least to be honest.

17-4ph will certain "rust!" it is like 70%+ iron. The whole line 13-8, 15-5 17-4 are all iron based.

Easiest way is to take the top ring off, flip the unit on its side and roll to where you want to dump it. Then just gently flip it over and the ash will dump out. If you have a friend or spouse, they can help move it versus rolling it. Hope that helps!

Deciding whether to get this for our first pandemic winter. Want to be able to hang out outside with my elderly mother. Which model should we get? Think we need the Yukon or is the bonfire good enough?
The yukon will accommodate more people and cast a greater radius of warmth. The bonfire will cover a smaller radius of warmth. If you can, go for the yukon. More fire pit for your money. Look for sales on the solo stove website when Labor Day or the holidays roll in. Cheers!
The Brew-Q thanks! My concern with the Yukon is that it takes a lot of wood and a lot of effort to set up each time, it seems. So, might be something we’d only do occasionally. Bonfire might be easier.

@The Brew-Q the guy who commented that stainless steel is not magnetic is wrong. There are several types of stainless steel. The main categories are ferritic and austenitic. And ferritic (ferro = steel in latin) is magnetic and can also rust.
And depending on the manufacturing process stainless steel could also magnetize for example in a rollformer or a press brake.
What about the ash build up? How long can you use it before having to remove the ashes? How do you remove the ashes?
You flip it over to empty. Works pretty well. Buildup is pretty minimal as I’ve burn 3 long fires without emptying before

Honestly, I don’t get a lot of sparks from mine and I use oak wood in it. Once in a while I may get a spark but I’m usually there monitoring the fire. I have contemplated getting the shield but also haven’t seen enough justification for it. I’m doing a follow up video this winter for it. Cheers!

No issue at all. It happens but never had any problem from it. I believe they make a spark arrester for it now. Just keep a hose nearby or some water in case.
I have ordered the Yukon and except to receive it in a couple of days. Do you think it will be to large for a deck that is 12 foot wide and 60 foot long? I'm thinking I should have gone with the Bonfire but I like the looks of the large Yukon.

Hi there. Super hesitant to have this on my wooden deck. I know they say it’s safe for decks but can I be sure of this with no concern?
Yes, I have had mine on my wooden deck for the last two winters and it has posed no issues so far. Make sure you get the little ring stand for it so that air can flow under the unit and keep free of any heat buildup underneath. I have a protective mat underneath mine for further insurance. Like any fire pit, always good to keep a source of water nearby when using them anyhow. Cheers!

You have to flip it over. It’s not too heavy. Still a pain in that aspect tho. I love it anyhow.

@@dtmacgregor YES! Need some details! I work at an outdoor store and bought one at a discount for Father's day. We broke it out and used it for the first time on our patio last night. LOVED IT! Even with us only having smaller sticks that we had from lots of brush trimming. I see a firewood run in the near future as well as husband building a rack to store all the wood in. But I think we'd really like to be able to put it out in the yard so we can spread out more with the chairs. Need to get one of those bases.

I wouldn’t. This thing can shoot some flames pretty high and the heat build up could ignite the ceiling on your porch. It’s a high heat beast

In case of emergency and you had to douse the fire pit to extinguish it, could you hose it down?
The way this fire pit is designed. I would not recommend it. There vent holes in the bottom that hot ash would wash out of. You’d have to make sure you doused it good and then it’s also made of steel and I dunno if that could cause any rust issues or not.
