My favourite aspect of Sir Viv's batting is that he attacked all types of deliveries and aimed to score 4s / 6s off all of them. Defence / leaving and taking risky singles to rotate the strike were never part of his game and he never hesitated while playing his shots. Though he played his shots late after allowing the ball to fully come onto him - he was very confident and self-assured while smashing the opposition's bowling to all parts of the ground. Sir Viv was a 'once-in-a-lifetime' batsman and the period that he played cricket in can well be called 'The Vivian Richards Era'.

    • There is/was Viv and the rest of the greats - no comparison with anyone please!!!
    • He is one of the two players (other than Gary Sobers), that could have played in any era in all 3 formats
    • He knew the big stage, did it when mattered, was consistent and majestic, graceful, destructive, and above all had the game awareness
    • The most competitive - like Michael Jordan. Always wanted to win. Never played for records. Win, win, and win by any means necessary
    • Never seen any one play this shot even today - a perfect late outswinger moving way outside the off stump is dispatched on the onside of the front foot
    • Whatever shots played in T20 today were played by Viv back in the day
    • If he had played with today’s bats, smaller grounds, power play rules, 30-yard limitations, fast outfield, etc, he would have scored 300 in ODIs and 200 in T20s
    • Jeff Thomson said, the fastest bowler ever lived, he was a price scalp and half an hour of Viv would change the game
    • Add this to his repertoire - slip catching, fielding, and quick running between the wickets, and the swagger when entering the ground to let the fielders know that I am coming for you.
    • Whatever you see on TV from the modern masters is from Viv - the stride to the crease, flexing muscles, staring down at bowlers till their run up is reached, etc. Stop comparing!!!

The best thing about that era was the characters: Viv, DK Lillee, Thommo, Merv Hughes, Botham, Willis and in the comm box Bill Lawry, Tony Greig, Geoffrey Boycott. Not to forget men of dignity and substance: Clive Lloyd, Kapil Dev, Imran Khan, Richard Hadlee, Martin Crowe and in commentary Richie Benaud, Fred Trueman, Ian Chappell. Today's is a more professional era but lacking in life, and the one guy who tries to move away from drabness on air, Warne, is universally berated. It's not T20 that's killing cricket, it's the drabness and cookie-cutter poster boys.

I think Warne can be annoying to listen to. A small minded competitive boofhead that needs to learn to listen. The biggest problem with the commentators are the people are not as worldly or as educated or well rounded as human beings and so they sound like ex-players cheering on their team. And they should commentate in 2's not 3's. They should spar politely back and forth; not tell beer swilling stories and laugh at each others jokes like KOK and co. That does not engage the audience into booth like Tony G & Bill Lawry used to. Or even Ian Chappell disagreeing with everyone was stimulating. First rule is conflict - and we are not bored.

You can thank the WICB for not giving Viv a fitting send off during the 1992 World Cup. That is how that mess of an organization dealt with its legends. At least Skerrit is restoring some respectability to the organization, even if the results are not in his favor now.

In any case just look Viv brilliant consistency across all four innings of test, his lowest avg is 48 (that too dipped in last yrs when he overplayed till 40, he use to avg 50+ each innings that tells about Viv's skill with the bat despite such a risky gameplay)..
They both were top guns in 1970s and 1990s as they both avg 58, Viv avg 50 in 80s to Tendulkar's 52 in 2000s but everyone knows 2000 onwards avging 50 became a joke which was pinnacle of ultimate greatness a decade or two back....
