  • Removing the brake shoes was the toughest part. I spent half a day just getting them out. But it looks like just a few minutes on video.

I knew when you bought that metal mill, you'd find a whole lot of uses for it, like making parts you couldn't find, AND making your own tools, like the pin puller...nice job, Mr. Handyman Evan!

I am really enjoying this video of you restoring your Allis tractor. With a little maintenance, these old tractors will last forever. And what I especially like is the fact that these tractors are just well designed quality machines with very little electronics and with well written instruction manuals with clear illustrations - no pictures or 5 pages of safety instructions in four languages.

I have that exact brake project to do on a WD, and I'm dreading it. Your pins came out a lot easier than others I've seen, and they had the jack-tool.
Peppermint oil is supposed to repel mice and I'll put some in those cavities since they are a very popular hotel in any that have been opened.

Evan, We have had a bead blasting box for the last 20 yrs or so. What we did with ours, is we put hinges on the bottom of the window and a simple slide lock on each side of the top. The reason for this, is so you can change the protective cover on the plexiglass easily. Here's the best part, once you do this, you now can use a wide piece of Saran wrap, cellophane and sandwich it between the box and window to keep your glass or plexiglass protected from the sand or glass beads. We also hung white towels on the sides and back to keep the beads or sand from bouncing all over. It does not blow threw the Saran wrap and saves us a ton of money from not having to buy the protective film. Hope this helps. Great video and thumbs up.

No one ever said working on old iron was easy. Things like brakes don't get much attention until things are worn out. Apparently the old AC sat for a good amount of time if mice took up residence in those brake housings. Those little beggars will get in just about anything, but places with moving parts don't tend to be preferable for obvious reasons. I'm impressed with your ingenuity and craftsmanship in making the pin puller. It was much more exotic than I envisioned when you first mentioned making it. Nice job! This old beauty will run like new when you're finished. 😉

Good idea for the block to pull the pin out. RPMs were too high on your mill, creates unnecessary heat. Heat is your enemy when machining. Also when your tapping, the most. critical part is starting it out straight by using the machine while you’re still on the hole location. Just put a center in your collet and line it up with the little hole in the top of your tap and it will start straight. Good video

When you laid the pieces on their sides for comparison, it looks like the larger piece in question is the female opposite of the larger piece you mentioned with the smaller spring. The other 2 pieces are male/female opposites as well. The way you laid them out looks correct for mirrored matching pairs. A larger and a smaller piece on each side.

Hi, Evan! You certainly know how to work on farm equipment. Thanks for the excellent content. Sorry about the skeleton, Rebekah. I know how you hate rats and mice.

Not sure if it’s been said yet, but instead of welding a nut to a carriage bolt, you could possibly buy a piece of all-thread, cut two lengths as long as you need to pull the entire pin, then put two nuts on one end; one as a jam nut and one as a “bolt head.”
Just an idea, not sure it would work, but it’s an idea.

When ever I have a jig like that with two bolts to turn, I put a socket wrench on both of them then I turn them both at the same time... Just thought I pass that along to you... BBE...

These really are great videos. Nice low key and actually relaxing. And educational. In my honest hypothesis of those brake shoes, I'm betting they are the right set of shoes it's just that someone assembled one of the sets backwards. It truly can be hard to know what's right as far as the shoes themselves are concerned. Even back then, they were always improving and updating and if your manual didn't come with the tractor, then it may have been updated after publication or there were multiple revisions and your version didn't get published. Sometimes, companies were also cheap and they had multiple versions of a part as they obtained whatever was cheapest at the time.

They are the correct shoes houses once a primary and a s shoe is a secondary. The same way brakes are on a car back in the day. It's put together with two small shoes like you're thinking the brakes whenever release and if you use too large shoes housings do breaks but never go on

Your doing a good job but like anything that old it always turns into a bigger job than anticipated. Things break and parts need to be replaced but it will be worth the effort when your finished. Plus all the enjoyment you will get from doing all the work yourself. You probably won’t want to get the tractor dirty when it’s finished and restored.

Evan, Some one has been in the brakes before and assembled them backwards. They will work both ways.
Steiner tractor has the pin[ pt # ACS1191 at $21.50 each]. Be sure to anti -seize the end of the pins into the different housing as well as into the axle housings.

evan you might be able to plug the spring holes with an old plastic hydraulic hose cap, it would collapse some but would seal up the hole enough to keep out the mice ,dust ,etc whenever i get a new hose i keep the end caps just for little jobs like that. don't know if i would replace the pin just pivot it to a new surface for the keeper clamp. looks like the pad with the bolt is swapped on the first set of pads unless the backsides are a lot different. tell Rebecca that the mice are more scared of her than she is of them i have a cousin that i worked for that was deathly afraid of snakes he bailed out of a grain bin over the top of a running auger i never saw it :)

Evan, you may want to consider electrolysis to help clean the parts since you have some rust issues.

I have a WD45 and I thought that I would have to remove the axle, but I don’t. But my tractor has the axle seals leaking, so maybe I should remove the axle and install new seals.

Make sure you lube up all the pivots and such on those shoes. Also, if your pins do not have a lead on the front edge file or grind them to help with installation.

On the odd-man-out brake shoe I'd research and aquire the appropriate one. If nothing else, you have a mill, make the odd one look like the rest! Just make triple sure of what the part should look like before you start cutting.
