  • An island where you can see the prototype of an Okinawan village / Walk around the island village, East China Sea Tonaki Island (Okinawa Prefecture)
An island located 58km northwest of Naha. Tonaki Village is the least populated village in Okinawa Prefecture, and was designated as a Tonaki Prefectural Natural Park in August 1997. It overlooks Aguni Island to the north, Kerama Islands to the south, and Kume Island to the west, and is located approximately in the center of the triangle connecting these islands. It was originally two islands, north and south, but it is said that sand was deposited between the two islands and they became one island. On the island, the Tonaki Higashi Shell Midden, the Nishisohara Ruins, the Angela Ruins, and the Tonakiri Ruins from the Gusuku period have been discovered. In the old days, it was called ``Tomushima.''
Also, because it was on the shipping route connecting China and the main island of Okinawa, in the 17th century, along with Kumejima and Tokashikijima, a flag tower, a facility for monitoring and reporting ships coming and going, was built at O-Honda (Mountain). was placed in. In the 20th century, skipjack fishing became the main industry, and many people migrated to the South Sea Islands, but in recent years coastal fishing, such as pole-and-line fishing, has become popular. In agriculture, it is famous for producing sticky millet and island carrots. Due to the influence of the ``land distribution system'' (Yushi), which was a fair agricultural land distribution system during the Ryukyu Dynasty, rectangular agricultural land divisions still remain.
The village is surrounded by Fukugi trees and has a beautiful landscape of traditional Okinawan red-tiled houses and white sand roads built on dug-out grounds, and in 2000, the entire village was designated as a nationally designated Important Traditional Building. It was selected as a "Group Preservation District" (Judenken). In addition, the Tonaki Village Traditional Village Shima Revitalization Project restores vacant houses and uses them as lodging facilities, installs footlights to ensure safe walking at night, cleans and beautifies areas around villages and tourist spots through Okinawa Promotion Special Promotion Grants, and removes exotic plants. Efforts are being made to increase the number of tourists by extermination, preserving and cultivating native plants, constructing facilities and roads using grants for maintenance and adjustment around designated defense facilities, and implementing a photo tourism project that takes advantage of the island's scenery. (See “Shimadasu”)
Settlements are formed on accumulated sand. The distance between the east beach and the west beach is only 600 meters, and there are mountains to the north and south, so there is a wind path above the village. The unique shape of the site was created under harsh natural conditions, with intense sea rain blowing over the village during typhoons. The site is dug lower than the village road, and is tightly surrounded by fukugi for wind and fire protection. Roads basically touch each site on the north and south sides, and the sandy soil allows for good rain penetration. In order to make effective use of the narrow dug-out site, the layout of the mansion is such that the main house and kitchen area are combined into one building, and the layout of the traditional Okinawan private house, such as a barn and a well, is rationally arranged. The plan of the main house retains the old form of Okinawan folk houses, with the front seat serving as a living space and the back seat serving as a space for storing food and grains such as seeds. In order to utilize the space of the small-scale house as widely as possible, verandahs and rain ends have been installed on the south and east sides, which serve as a buffer between the interior and exterior spaces.
Within the village, there are several places of worship such as the village common well (muragaa), which has been used for domestic water since ancient times, and the shrine mansion (toyashiki), which is a place for rituals, and the process of forming the historical landscape of the village. is conveyed to the present.

It is classified in the genus Habu, in the class Reptiles, Squamata, and family Viperidae. I wonder if it's different from a viper. Thank you for watching 😊
