Shimokoshiki Island
It is located in the East China Sea about 45 km west of the Satsuma Peninsula, and the northern part of the island is the former Kashima Village, and the southern part is the former Shimo Village. The land is steeper than Kamikoshikijima and Nakakoshikijima, and there are steep cliffs and strangely shaped rocks, especially on the west side. The Himeura Group from the Cretaceous period, which dates back approximately 80 million years, remains on the island, and fossils that appear to be the teeth and part of a rib of a carnivorous dinosaur have been excavated. In 2013, Japan's first fossil of a ceratopsian was discovered, and in 2013, the fossil of a hadrosaur was discovered, attracting attention. The main industry is fishing, and the amount of fish caught, such as yellowtail and yellowtail, is one of the largest in the prefecture. It is also the only place in Kyushu where deep ocean water is taken. The masked god, Toshidon, who appears in the village on the night of New Year's Eve is famous, and was designated as a national important intangible folk cultural property in 1970, and registered as a UNESCO intangible cultural heritage in 2009 (in 1971, other Expanded registration to include local events). In 2020, the Koshiki Ohashi Bridge was completed on Imuta Seto, which separates Nakakoshiki and Kamikoshiki Islands, connecting the three islands by land. The Koshikijima Islands will become even more integrated in terms of tourism and lifestyle. A variety of initiatives are being promoted under the slogan, "There is only one koshiki."
Teuchi Bay is too shallow for boats to reach, so Teuchi Port is located on the opposite side of the bay from the sandbar-shaped beach area at the eastern end of the arc. There used to be a ``Tsuguchi Bansho'' there, and about 700 meters from the guardhouse to the middle of the arc is the remains of a samurai residence (a village at the foot of the mountain). There are villages in the remaining part of the arc, and the area between the arc-shaped villages and the mountains behind is countryside. The harmony between the topography created by nature and the townscape created by humans is simply amazing. There is also the mystique of sea turtles coming to lay eggs on the shallow shore.

「これは行かないわけにはいかない」、旅先で散策中に何度も何度も自問する言葉ですね（笑）。しかし風が強いのでしょうね、集落の壁がすごく高い印象です。はっきり言って殺風景なほどに。忌憚なくコメントすると、南に行くほど貧しかったんだなぁと感じます。今がどうこうではなく、街の作り、お寺や神社の立派さ、そして原野の未開拓さ。基本は漁村だったのでしょうか。
裏寂しさと荒々しさと、あともう一つ。古くから人が住んでいたんだなと感じさせる「道」と「石垣」でしね。住宅はほぼほぼ建て替えられていましたが。。。
