  • In this fourteenth episode of “Assassin’s Creed: Real History” we explore the opportunistic, swashbuckling period recognized as the Golden Age of Piracy, which represented the backdrop for Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag.
If you have any topic requests for a future video, in which you would like me to research the real history and compare it to the game’s representation, please leave me a comment!

    Topic Choice
As an extension to my sub-series that discusses the time periods in the franchise, I decided to re-explore this topic in a more in-depth manner, providing viewers with a closer look into the Golden Age’s early period, while also offering a more thorough analysis of the historical events depicted in the game.
    Disclaimer
I am an amateur historian. History is not my official field of study, but rather a passion. This series acts as my hobby and as a way to share with you the real history behind characters, groups, events and locations that are depicted in the Assassin’s Creed video game series. Although I work hard to be as detail-oriented as possible, I am clearly not without fault and therefore welcome you to let me know whether you feel I have missed anything important or have misrepresented something in my video.

I never realized so many of the characters you meet in the game are actual larger-than-life historical figures

Black Flag was definitely my favorite game in the series in terms of the historical setting. While I would do the occasional bit of outside reading into the events and historical figures from the previous games, Black Flag was really the one that got me hooked on reading about all the different pirates and the events surroundings them for hours on end.

Same here, however it wasn't until this video that I got into it on a rather in-depth scale. I was really impressed by the vast amount of historical events and anecdotes they managed to fill into this rather compelling and enjoyable AC story.

They probably mostly picked figures that don't have any living relatives, for legal reasons. The other characters could be more loosely based on reality.

This is great and well done! Very much enjoyed. I know the game begins in 1715, but obviously players get to not only see Port Royal, but walk around the once immense heavily populated town. Historically, the great earthquake, sinking, and multiple tsunami‘s destroyed acres and acres in 1692. I haven’t played the game in a while and I should’ve paid more attention but was it only fort Charles? No fort James, correct? Fascinating stuff!

All movie's and video games take creative liberties, but this video shows how much painstaking historical research goes into these popular productions. Red dead is another great example. *Epic* production efforts 🤯

Maybe the fact isn't significant enough in the grand scale of the Golden Age or piracy or the Historical Link is too weak to the Ac source, but you didn't mention that Adewale could be heavily inspired by the infamous Black Pirate Black Caesar, a trusted Lieutenant by none other than Blackbeard himself. Black Caesar, whose real name had been lost to history.
He was said to be a African Chieftain tricked by a Slaver on board a slaver ship to the Carribean. Then a Sailor on board the Ship miraculously made friends with Caesar, and eventually escaped the Ship with a longboat. The two began their impromptu pirate Career using the Longboat by pretending to be Shipwrecked Sailors and robbing any sailors coming to their aid. The two had a relatively successful career and friendship until one day the two fell over for a woman where Black Caesar murdered his friend for the Woman. Then Caesar expanded his pirate career, got a actual ship and crew and eventually getting the attention of Blackbeard who invited Caesar to his fold. Caesar was successful in Blackbeard's fleet, even owned a harem of Woman Slaves whom he maltreated. When blackbeard fell and the Royal Navy is after him, he was captured and hung eventually however the harem of woman slaves was discovered by the Navy and many died of starvation.
    Now links.
Both Adewale and Black Caesar were slaves , befriended a Sailor on board (even tho Edward is a fellow captive) and escaped.
Both Adewale and Black Caesar worked with Blackbeard , (except Caesar worked FOR Blackbeard, while Adewale probably cooperated when he was with Edward)
Both Adewale and Black Caesar was a trusted and high ranked officer of their own Captain (where Adewale is Kenway's Quartermaster, Black Caesar is one of Blackbeard's most trust man and Lieutenant).

Thank you very much. I'm always happy to hear from viewers who appreciate the effort put into making this content! You can definitely expect videos discussing the time periods chosen for AC: Unity and AC: Syndicate in the future, however they will be the final two episodes in this sub-series as I am working my way through the time periods chronologically based on their historical occurrences.

Thanks, I'm really glad you liked it! In all honesty, it was a lot of fun to research and put together. In terms of your request, chronologically I have one more period I intend to cover before making a video on the French and Indian War, but it'll definitely be coming sooner rather than later! Thank you for the continued support.

9:34 at this point you realize this marvelous world and plot have been ruined by shitty immersion breaking office sequences, a clunky movement system and game breaking bugs that render half the missions trivialized by an unintentional casino style luck system so you have to come to youtube and watch the story. yeah im reeeeeeal fuccckinggg salty after my seconnd play through was ruined essentially souley because its a game created by ubisoft. ITS 2020 CAN WE GET A REAL FUCKING PIRATE GAME NOT SPOILED BY THE WORST GAME DEV IN EXISTENCE??????

It would be great if Rockstar made one. I also want a pirate game just plundering and boarding and starting with only a sloop. And with historical characters and a great story.
So something like this game but everything more and a different story. I really want a sloop with only 10 cannons so I can sail everywhere.
      (I know I'm late)
