    This 762mm narrow gauge line is operated by rugged and powerful C2 class 0-8-0 tender locomotives. The Shibanxi narrow gauge railway is still operated using steam motive power. Its continued existence is due to the fact that it is now a tourist railway having lost the coal traffic when Jiayang mine closed. The tourist operation is now well patronised by local tourists. At the time of my visit in 2007 the small drift mine was still operational and some mine activity can be seen in this video. At the time of my visit there was no road access to the mine, a road has now been built to this area.

    Should it be leaking so much stream?....looks like its about to explode.

      Not about to explode. Locos nearing end of working life. Mine closed and locos scrapped shortly after my visit. A lot of steam leaking from cylinder glands, leaking drain cocks and normal steam vents (injectors etc). Steam more visible by low air temperature.

    Why do they tip coal down the embankment?

    • @blackthorne57
      @blackthorne57  Před 4 lety

      The small drift-mine where the coal is extracted is at a higher level than the railway that will take it away. All very inefficient, the mine has now closed.
