Metre Gauge Steam and Diesel in Burma 2018
In January 2018 FarRail tours organised a visit to Myanmar/Burma to photograph and video the metre-gauge railway system. Steam haulage abruptly finished in April 2008. Some locos were placed into storage. A few have been overhauled and made fit for service.
I shot video on this tour using a Nikon SLR and a Panasonic camcorder. The first video is from material using the Nikon.
Included in the video:
• Vulcan Foundry YD class 2-8-2, built 1949, No.967.
• Ex. JR Hokkaido line, Kiha45, DMU built 1980, sent to Burma 2013.
• Ex. Indian Railways Alco 6-251D diesel loco built 2008. India has virtually eliminated all meter gauge track so has MG locos surplus to requirements.
• LRBE, Light Rail Bus Engine. Locally built rail-bus using a Hino lorry chassis. Due to sanctions it was not possible to import so were constructed in-house from a variety of second-hand items.
Because of the flat terrain the steam locos did not work very hard.

Shot at three lineside location on Saturday of the three-day gala. At the first location I had a problem with image buffering, probably caused by a faulty SD card. Epping-Ongar Railway (EOR) June 2023 In June 2023 Ex GWR loco 4-6-0, Pendennis Castle visited the EOR to take place in a steam gala. Ex GWR 9400 class 0-6-0 saddle tank was also a visitor. Resident 2-6-2T small prairie tank L150 was active.

If the US Government had listened to these protesters, countless Vietnamese and US lives would have been saved. As a bonus they would have avoided the ignominy of defeat.

an unusual sight to see new track on South American railways
Undertaken just for tourist trains, we must hope they are viable. No regular passenger or freight is planned.
Khyber Pass Railway 1) Built in = November, 1925 2) Line of Lenth = 58km (36 miles). 3) Track guage = 1876mm or ( 5ft & 6 inches). Stations: 1) Peshawar city 2) Peshawar cantonment 3) Jamrud 4) Bagiarai 5) Medanak (1st Reversing station) 6) Chagai. ( 2nd reversing station) 7) Shahgai. 8) Kata Kushta 9) Zintara 10) Sultan Khel 11) Landi Kotal 12) Torra Tigga ( 3rd Reversing station) 13) Landi Khana ( 4th reversing station) Victor Bailey was the engineer who supervise the constraction of Railway line. There are 32 Tunnels and 92 Bridges & Culverts in 58km railway Track Track passes through mountains terrain, reaching height of 1200m (3,900ft). On 3rd April, 1926, the railway track was extended to Landi Khana, just 3km from the Torkham Border crossing with Afghanistan. In 1932, the Landi Kotal to Khana section was Closed as the insistence of Afghan government Regularly Scheduled Rail services continued between Peshawar and Landi Kotal until they ended in 1982, due to lack of commercial value. In 2008, mansoon rains in the Khaber Pass washed away significant Section of the Railway lineand the track was closed to all rail traffic. In 2010, Pakistan Railway began a FESIBILTY STUDY, to rebuild the khaber pass railway track and to possibly extend it further to jalabad. Afghanistan.However, work is slow due to security reason. In 1916, the Afghan Ministery of Public Works began a survey of the Railway track from Pakistan boarder to Jalalabad. Afghanistan has put also proposal and requests to further extended the railway to Kabul City. The Afghanistan Chamber of commerce & Industries (ACCI), said that the new Railway line would facilitate trade with Pakistan. BY ZAKIR KHAN --CANADA

In some strange way, it seems that, in addition to a problem related to poverty and the insufficiency of this type of transport, permission for this type of overcrowding has become something cultural. In some videos, it is notable that the trains and stations are new and yet there is overcrowding. Somehow this was assimilated into the local culture and the government stopped worrying. What for most countries seems bizarre and absurd, for the people of Bangladesh it is simply common and everyday.
If I was a billionaire, I would Purchase Some QJ Locomotives From China and Donate them to the City of Flagstaff in Arizona and The City of Portland in Oregon and I’ll restore the QJ Class Locomotives in Oregon and I’ll put a QJ Locomotive on Display In Flagstaff in Arizona next to the Last Main Line steam locomotive Santa Fe 3759 That was the last and final to pull freight.

Wow! One of the best steam train videos on CZcams. How on earth did they run those setups through tunnels? Oxygen masks? Thanks so much.
Because of the extreme low winter temperatures, the locos had fully enclosed cabs. This made conditions on the footplate a bit more tolerable. If the tunnel was short and the gradient allowed, the locos were not fired while in a tunnel. On a footplate ride in Turkey, the tunnel procedure was a wet rag over the mouth and nose and crouch on the cab floor!

Imagine the smell
Have you even been to Bangladesh? If you have, you will notice the predominant smell is wood smoke from cooking fires. In towns the smell is street food cooking, in markets the smell of fruit and spices. Bangladesh is a very hot country, discarded rubbish can pong a bit but that is true of tropical countries the world over. The men on the train are Muslim, they wash a lot. If you were referring to the diesel loco, yes, the smell of its exhaust was not pleasant.
Once upon a time maybe in the 40s-50s, Tottenham used to be a very rich area, richer than Kensington and Chelsea, if you asked somebody in those days where they live, people uses to be proud to say Tottenham.
Yes, Northumberland Park in Tottenham had some attractive large houses. I think Tottenham's peak was more likely pre WW2. I moved into the area in 1958, at that time it was well looked after but not posh. The Lea Valley had a lot of light industry, providing employment for many reasonably well paid skilled workers. It was convenient for them to live in Tottenham.

Me again Sorry !! Makes all the hairs on the back of my neck stand up .What skilled drivers and firemen ,the weight the gradients and no wheel slip. Love the goats ,very partial to a little cashmere round the shoulders !!!
What beasts , wonder what the outside temperature was . Icicles or what !
The outside temperature about minus 20 degrees C. We went in mid-winter to get the best steam effects. The skilled loco crews received bonuses for fuel economy. Some locos had mechanical stokers but they preferred to fire by hand for better control of what went into the firebox. The Cashmere goats were a hardy bunch, finding very little to eat on the hills, I expect there was top-up fodder back at the farm.

This is ridiculous....this locomotive is heavilly priming (incompressible water cary-over to the cylinders which clearlearly has broken an exhaust valve ring from the sound od it. ) and the cause is a stupid driver refusing to blow down excess boiler water before opening thr regulator. The poor locomotive must have lost at least half a boiler of water there and all the oill removed from the cylinders for the next half an hour of opperation. This is painfull to watch1
