Your frank commentary is exactly what I like to hear in preparation for travel. I much prefer authenticity & quality than run-of-the-mill tourist attractions -- Having said that, I do appreciate the natural beauty and antique architecture of this area.

I work in the tourism industry running my own business and work in a town that’s a heavily visited tourist town. We have lots of small independent businesses but they are geared to the tourists as this is how they make money and survive. Over the years I’ve seen so many businesses come and go and it’s so hard to run a small business, especially at the moment so whilst they may not be up to your standards they no doubt work really hard.

I've lived on the outskirts of Bourton for 8 years now, I don't enjoy the throngs of tourists but am fond of the village simply because the scenery is utterly beautiful and it's possible to find peace and quiet if you know where to look. BTW it should be quieter this year as coaches are no longer allowed to park in Bourton!

As a lifelong Cotswoldian I'd recommend watching Josie's blogs for retail and dining recommendations in the area etc but also watch the Cotswold Explorer channel on CZcams for a more in depth history of the various towns and villages visited. Less touristy, real Cotswold working villages to add a balance. There are so many charming market towns and villages. Not all not all have a 'Bamford' quality dining pub or a Daylesford farm shop but they are worth visiting none the less.

Loved this video! Me and my sister did a trip from the U.S. to England in December and decided to do several days in the Cotswold's. We went to both Stow and Bourton on the Water was adorable! Gladly it wasn't as packed because we were clearly there in the "off season" I suppose. I adored Stow and had my now favorite boots shipped from that very Fairfax & Favor store. I've had more compliments on my boots than any other shoes I have ever worn and I am obsessed with them! I absolutely will be that tourist that comes back again as I loved every bit of England I visited!

My Grandad was a policeman around Bourton-on-the-Water and Stowe back in the 70s, so it was lovely to see them featured! From my personal experience, the local businesses in Broadway are great quality and I love how they support eachother!

In Bourton take the hidden public footpath on the top side of Lansdown Road next to the house called ‘Strathspey’.

I'm Dyspraxic and do exactly the same. It's just that. If I don't get it out of me. Then I literally forget what I was going to say. It annoys the heck out of myself. So I do apologise if I interrupt. And talk a lot, get excitable about im talking about. Getting carried away. Then I try my best to remember. But at times I do forget. Because I'm focused on what the other person is saying. Then what I wanted to say. It's like that's been deleted. I only got diagnosed in my late 30's . However, I was told I have been Dyspraxic since childhood. Which explains a lot.Im on the mild spectrum. But it really does show in conversations. I'm not saying Charlie is Dyspraxic. He may not be. There's absolutely no shame in it. Daniel Ratcliffe is Dyspraxic. Yet he's famous as Harry Potter.

When travelling from Daylesford (re your recommendation) back to Burford where we were staying, we went off the main road and discovered a lovely country pub in a small hamlet called the Feathered Nest Country Inn. Unfortunately it was closed 😓 but we’re hoping to go back there on our way home from Tetbury this summer. It comes under Chipping Norton. Like you we found Bourton on the Water very underwhelming but loved Chipping Camden. Again one of yours. But we couldn’t find the antique place in Chipping Norton. Love all your recommendations so please keep them coming.

Hi Josie, loved the vlog! I’ve been watching you for years and I recently moved out of the Cotswolds after living in Bourton on the Water for 8 years so loved seeing you walk around all my well known/loved places. Before you mentioned it I was screaming at the screen that you must try a smith burger! They are honestly the best burger I’ve ever eaten (and I’m fussy!) and they have truffle Mac and cheese as a side you would absolutely love it. The Chip Shed fish and chips are also very good. I’d recommend The Den for lunch and for their milkshakes, and the chestnut tree do great cakes and pastries. I would avoid the summer holidays in Bourton, unfortunately it becomes so busy it really isn’t enjoyable - the water is completely filled with children and dogs, and the grassed areas cannot even be seen because of so many people there who often leave their litter. Parking is a nightmare during this time too. I’d also recommend tourists to avoid January because most businesses are closed during this time. I’d recommend getting to Bourton early to avoid the crowds. The model village is great for tourists to visit and also the Christmas shop.

    • @lollypops1
      @lollypops1 Před 5 měsíci +1

Just to add to Charlie’s opinion on Bourton - yes you are right a lot of shops are targeted towards overseas tourists (gift shops etc) and locals particularly despise the newish American style ‘’candy’’ shop (just not in keeping with the area at all!) but it is unfortunately how the village makes most of its money. The places I mentioned above are small local businesses and not chains. Smiths burger is run by two brothers, The den is a small family run business by locals etc. so you just have to pick and choose your places.

Thank you for being so honest!! My husband and I had a trip to the Cotswolds in 2011. Like many other places, tourists have flocked to certain cities and towns and have overwhelmed them, as they have here in tourist areas in the state of Maine. The Knick knack shops abound. I think where you live is unspoiled and private to a degree. Watching and enjoying all of your videos, you are at Daylesford and Bamford when they open and they are not as crowded. Our world has always been changing but hang onto your place of beauty and enjoy every minute with Dexie and Dickens.

Hannah was a joy to talk with to learn about the area and made sure we’re were taken care of every morning! Stow was the perfect anchor point as it’s 20-30 minutes from most of the popular areas. It was great to watch your vlog while I was working out today... I missed seeing some of your new H&M outfits and had to rewatch that segment... Hard to see everything in between the push up portion of the work out❤️💕

Josieeee, if you visit Bourton-on-the-water on summertime you will absolutely love it.
The atmosphere is just amazing, people enjoying ice creams while they dip their feet in the water, there is usually live street music on the background by talented artists, children running and playing in the water. And the colours, there’s green everywhere, the flowers.l are so beautiful. Honestly there is nothing better. Tell Charlie on summertime he would change his opinion. It’s definitely a place to go with family. We really really enjoyed this place.

Having lived all over the country in the United States, I find those that have lived in areas more than a few years do not explore their own areas, no matter how fabulous it is. I made it a point to explore all over in each area we lived. People would often say, “I’ve lived here my entire life, and dint see a fraction of what you have done”. Explore where you live it’s AMAZING. I would love for you to explore about the Cotswolds…imagine you would have new followers just for that.

We’re US citizens and visited Bourton on the Water in 1990 (I know….ages ago.) But we bought 2 pictures of the countryside that still hang in my dining room today that I love. Such a pretty village…at least then it was!

Another idea to include in the tours of the local, villages is the worship or churches that are in them. I know personally, I have ancestors that ruled and were buried in their church with a sculpted image of them. I’m sure that isn’t the, proper verbage but I think you get the jest. Looking forward to this additional information to the, vlogs. Hugs from Texas!

yes, Charlie is right... Tolkein did have inspiration... also Yew was planted for the villagers to have access for wood for their Bows, as villagers were required to have access to this for their Lord of the manor... loved the tour . love from Cornwall

Fudge is a super American thing as well, always found in tourist shops - usually freshly made - you can watch it bring made in huge copper pots! Quite fun and of course lots of salt water taffy bring freshly made !!
