  • A bunch of computer components and electronics I got at the thrift store recently, ending somewhat of a dry spell recently (except for the Sony Hi8 camcorder, which I made a video about).

    I went to a large Goodwill store in San Francisco a couple of weeks ago and I was appalled at how expensive their tech stuff is now. I was hoping I could buy a a 4 or 5 year old PC tower for $100 but boy was I in for a shock. They want $228 plus tax for 2009 Dell computer with Windows Vista on it. The odd thing about it is they're obviously over stocked with computers. They had at least 80 PC towers covering an entire wall and I was the only one there.. Even their used TVs are ridiculous. They wanted $550 for a 2004 60" HDTV. I walked over to the cashier and said "You guys realize this stuff is used, right?" lol

    • @ldchappell1
      @ldchappell1 Před 9 lety +5

      vwestlife They probably don't realize how much DVD players have come down in price. 10 years ago I paid $119 for a Toshiba DVD player at Best Buy. Last year I went to the same store and bought an LG Blu ray player (that also plays DVDs) for $53. I've seen brand new DVD players as low as $29.

    @scryedzxp Vintage computers all run their own different software and games, so that's why I have a collection of them (Mac, Commodore, Atari, etc.). Also, the old PCs you see all have my old personal data on them, so that's why I keep them. But when it comes to things like stereo components, Walkmans, etc., which all serve the same basic purpose and are interchangeable, I keep the one or two which work best and have the nicest features, and sell or donate the rest.

    The thrift stores here are pretty bare too. And when they do have something decent, they want an arm and a leg for it. No need for the AoL clue, it would not be physically possible for a film camera of any normal format to have its lens up in the corner like that. That was the fashion for early compact digital cameras though, don't know why. The really early ones had such small CCDs, and hence lenses, that maybe the idea was to have it just sticking out of a pocket so you could take covert snaps.

    @lurkerrekrul Před 9 lety +2

    When I go to thrift stores or Goodwill, they always have outdated junk. I look at it and ask myself "Do I actually have any use for this?" and the answer is usually no. The last thing I bought was a digital joystick with a gameport connector on it. I was hoping that it would work with my gameport to USB adapter, or that the company made one. No such luck. It only cost me $1.50, but now I have another joystick sitting on the pile that I will probably never use.
    When this area has bulk trash month, I always find mice and keyboards. I used to take them all, but now I only take them if they're fairly modern or there's something unusual about them. I have more keyboards than I know what to do with.

    • @ldchappell1
      @ldchappell1 Před 9 lety

      lurkerrekrul The Goodwill in San Francisco has tons of tech stuff but their prices are ridiculous. I went there a couple of weeks ago and they want over $200 for 5 and 6 year old PC towers with Windows Vista on them. They charge $7.99 for used USB keyboards and mouses. Ten years ago you could go in there and walk out with a fully functioning computer (with the monitor) for less than $100.

    • @lurkerrekrul
      @lurkerrekrul Před 9 lety

      ldchappell1 I haven't seen a computer in any of the three Goodwill stores in this area in a couple years.
      The last time I went to them, I saw a CD-ROM drive for $10, an old 2-axis, 2-button analog gameport joystick for $7, a wireless keyboard and wireless mouse, both without the receivers and a bunch of regular, dirty keyboards for about $5 each.
      That's the kind of stuff that people just throw out during bulk trash month (which starts either next month, or June).
      One of the Goodwills does have a large, fancy, USB joystick priced at $8. I noticed it on Sunday, the day AFTER the color changed. My friend said he saw it on Saturday, but passed it up. It's been there for the past 3-4 weeks, so I keep hoping that the color will change back to Blue so I can buy it for $4. I have no idea why a crappy old analog joystick disappeared in a week, but that joystick is still there. I'm just keeping my fingers crossed that it stays that way. Not that $8 is a bad price (if it works), but I really don't need it, so half price would be better.

    • @ldchappell1
      @ldchappell1 Před 9 lety

      lurkerrekrul Are you in a rural area? I don't imagine Goodwill stores in smaller towns would get many second hand computers. The city I live in has a population of almost a million. It's either that or maybe they don't have a technician who can analyze and refurbish them. The Goodwill I go to has computer department and everything is guaranteed for 30 days.

    • @lurkerrekrul
      @lurkerrekrul Před 9 lety

      ldchappell1 I'm in the suburbs in New England. It's not a huge city, but not really a small town either. I usually find more computer stuff during bulk trash month (different area each week, the city will haul away almost anything you leave on the curb) than I do at Goodwill though.

      @ldchappell1 Před 9 lety

      lurkerrekrul It never fails to amaze the things people throw away. @uxwbill The AOL camera works! Low light sensitivity is poor, but the flash works. It has some internal memory in addition to the CF card slot. Saving a photo to memory is slow -- there's about a 10 to 12 second wait after pressing the shutter button (seems even slower than a floppy disk camera). I found another pop-open door, with jacks for DC 6V input, USB (although it's a full size Type A USB jack like on a PC, not the typical mini jack), "Digital", and "Video Out" (with 2.5mm jack).

    Looks like that Celeron D 356 was around $90 when first released in May 2006. That had dropped nearly 30% to around $65 when this one was made in July 2007. So it would seem it had lost 95.5% of its original value (93.8% of release value) as of 2011. Based on data from the cpu-world website.

      Yes, but you have Nottingham University! :) And yeah, he's in New Jersey. Don't feel bad, I live in Ohio and I never find cool stuff like this around my area, just old clothes, broken stuff and dirty couches. Then again, I gotta expand my horizons.

    @vwestlife Odd, the installer gave me the option to keep both copper lines. You are locked into a duopoly anyway since your choices on the pole here are the ILEC and cable. All the good CLECs have vanished and those left don't provide competitive pricing and are treated like 2nd class citizens in the CO (good luck getting timely repairs if your line goes down). Never had a problem with the battery backup either, for most its a moot point since landlines are rapidly disappearing from use anyway.

    (or do they have any broken items?)
