    10. Green Iguanas
Iguanas are a popular pet for collectors of exotic animals because of how cute they look and supposedly they are easy to take care of. Unfortunately the idea that they are simple to look after was likely spread by those who sell them, because they actually need a strict environment and diet to survive. They can also be difficult to tame and handle, especially when they are fully grown, and this has led to a large number being released into the wild.
They are naturally from central and south America, and thrive in warm environments. This has meant that those released in similar climates, such as those found in parts of California, Florida and Hawaii, have thrived and begun to breed. This has been detrimental to the local ecosystems where they compete with native species for food, and will prey on species that haven’t adapted to deal with these kind of threats. As a result, Iguanas are illegal to own in Hawaii because of the potential devastation and havoc they can cause on the islands. In Florida, the populations of feral iguanas have caused extensive damage to vegetation and local wildlife, so if you do decide to get one please be a responsible owner and don’t release them into the wild!.
    9. Cuban Tree Frog
These cute frogs are a favorite of exotic species collectors, but the Cuban Tree Frog is causing serious issues across Florida. They are quite difficult to identify among other frog species, something that is made even more difficult by the way that they can change color. They are originally native to Cuba, the Bahamas, and the Cayman Islands, and are thought to have been first introduced to Florida in the 1920’s. It’s the recent popularity of keeping them as pets, though, that has led to an explosion in their numbers in the wild as a result of collectors releasing them.
Cuban Tree Frogs are an aggressive species that feed on at least five different species of native Floridian frogs, as well lizards, small snakes and tadpoles. They are also able to survive in urban areas, and will take over birdhouses, ponds and birdbaths where they lay their eggs. They have been responsible for massive changes in the ecosystem, and have even been known to affect humans by causing power outages?? They are a danger to environments where they aren’t native, and so must not be released under any circumstances.
    8. Rabbits
Rabbits are another incredibly popular pet for owners around the world, but when they are released into non-native environments they can cause serious damage. The best example of this is in Australia where they were released for hunting in 1859. Only 24 were set free, but by 1920 there were an estimated 10 billion across the country. There have been numerous attempts to curb the population growth, but with their speed of breeding, ability to feed on most vegetation, and overall resilience, rabbits still roam Australia in huge numbers and pose a threat to many of the natural species like the bilby and burrowing bettong by taking over their burrows.
    7. Goldfish/Carp
They may seem harmless enough, and are a popular pet for adults and children alike around the world, but releasing your pet fish into the wild can have disastrous consequences for your local environment. Nowhere has this effect been seen more clearly than in Australia where the problem has gotten out of hand. Notorious for their strict rules on bio-containment, it’s why Johnny Depp and Amber Heard got in trouble for allegedly sneaking in their dogs. The Australians have good reason for being that way.
In 2016 researchers from the Murdoch University in Perth caught goldfish that weighed up to 2kg and were up to 30 centimeters long. These large animals are thought to have descended from a small variety that were being kept as pets and released into the wild a few years before. By feeding on more food and disrupting the ecosystems, these fish can spread and cause significant damage by off all the native species. Goldfish the size of dinner plates have also been found in Alberta, Canada, and have led to fines of $100,000 dollars to those that release non-native species into the wild.
Angler Raphael Biagini captured a legendary “giant goldfish” out of a lake in the south of France. Fellow fishermen had spent 6 years trying to capture this orange koi carp weighing 30lbs. The only way this fish ended up in the lake, was because someone was trying to get rid of it.

Origins Explained. A carnival came through my town a few years ago and one of the green iguanas liked my car apparently and climbed around my tires. Lucky for him I found him and knew he wasn't a wild lizard from the area (Tennessee.) So I took him home with me until someone could adopt the little guy. So beware of carnivals they have all kinds of animals you can win as prizes.

I don't understand why you'd ever release a pet. I had two mice that I didn't really like, but I still kept them until they died from old age. Releasing an animal that was bred in captivity into the wild is dumb and cruel. If you buy a pet you are responsible for them. People are so weird.

We never managed to teach them to handle being, well, handeled. They bit me loads of times until i basically gave up and just let them be. My babysitter actually had two mice that I really liked that were super sociable and nice, hence why we got mice in the first place after our cat died.

When I was a kid, my mum spotted a silver fox rabbit running around across the road from our house.
With the help of a few people passing by, we caught him. My mum contacted people and put posters up to try and reunite him with his owner, but no one claimed him, so we took him in.
We had that rabbit fifteen years. He loved to eat grapes (My Stepdad would feed him three every day, if there were four, he'd leave one and if there were two, he would bite my Stepdad), he enjoyed chasing our cats around when they were outside, and due to his escaping abilities, he even became a great grandfather.
Sadly, he passed away about seven years ago now because he was ancient at that point. But apparently, the last thing he did before he died was eat a massive carrot.
I miss that rabbit, he was such a character.

No one in the neighborhood claimed her so she had her own 2 room rabbit hutch outside for the 5 years she lived with me. She had solar heating and heated water dishes in the winter and a shade tree and small fan in the summer. Bugzy was leash trained and went on walks at least 3 times a week. She was the best thing to happen that year.

Wow, that sounds very nice, I haven't seen any black cockatoos for about 4~5 years. Used to have two who'd regularly fly over the freeway on the way to work.
About talking cockatoos; we used to have a pair of pecan nut and a pair of macadamia trees in the neighbour's yard. We'd get white cockatoos visiting every year. Mum damn near had a heart attack when she heard someone cheerfully saying "hello!" from the top of one of the pecan nut trees. Turns out it was one of the cockatoos.
I've been pretty keen on planting some macadamia trees in our back yard to coax them back again, but my living conditions have't been stable enough to raise the seedlings past around 15cm.

The goldfish in your bowl aren't small because they're small animals. They're small because they aren't being cared for properly. Put them in a big tank or pond with sufficient filtration, and you'll see how big they get when they aren't soaking in filth with poor nutrition and insufficient space. Yes they're just goldfish, but you shouldn't keep any pet you can't or won't care for properly.

Actually they just grow to the size of whatever they live in so....

    • @irwyn9157
      @irwyn9157 Před 7 lety +25

The saying, "they grow to the size of the tank/environment" is actually a myth. Just like people, their growth/size is determined by their genetics (and carp are large fish). However, keeping a goldfish in a too-small environment stunts the growth of the animal, which reaches, on average, 12-14 inches in length. The goldfish in a too-small environment will likely reach approximately 4-5 inches. While not "big", picture a 5 inch animal in a 1 gallon or smaller bowl. 5 inches is way too big. And, they can grow pretty quickly. I've cared for some that grew from 1.5/2 inches to 5 and 6 inches in less than 6 months. Not only that, but stunting a fish's growth leads to deformation, pain, and extremely poor health. A goldfish's average lifespan is roughly 20 years or so; not a "just a few days/months."Also, goldfish are very messy and produce a lot of waste. As a result, a large volume of water is necessary to dilute the toxic waste for the fish to be able to survive, as well as a large, efficient filtration system to help remove fish waste. Remember, goldfish are carp (a domesticated type thought to be descendent from wild Asian carp), and carp are known to be large and messy fish. Thus, goldfish are also large, messy fish.Taking all this into account, the bare minimum for a single goldfish to survive in would be a 30 gallon tank with equivalent filtration. Even this is too small.Goldfish are fairly social, so one should really have a group of goldfish, not just one all alone. Even a small group of 3 goldfish would require a minimum (based on the above statement) of a 90 gallon tank; although, with 3 times the waste, even 90 gallons would most likely not be enough. Basically, goldfish are really only best suited either in a large private koi pond, or in the hands of a very experienced hobbyist with plenty of room, time, and money to dedicate to the keeping of these wonderful fish.

Just so you know, the air port in Washington Virginia release every turtle or exotic animal into a pond if a traveler decides to bring their pet on the flight with them.
I was not aware that turtles were not allowed on flight and they took mine away from me. I was distraught through the whole flight and they told me they released it into a pond near by. It was a baby slider turtle. New born.
I told them during the conflict that it was going to stay inside my gift bag so it didn't disturb any one on flight. They were "concerned" about getting some disease which you can only get by "touching" a contaminated species.
It didn't matter what I said to them they wanted to take it away anyways.
I had approached my area before security and asked them if my turtle was allowed before entering. They allowed me through the gate with my turtle. The only person who had a problem was the captain himself.
If you have intentions of bringing a pet home do not take it to am air port. They will either kill it or let it go and come up with any excuse they can to calm you down.
So it's not just your every day person. It's professional businesses to for the dumbest reasons.
I just hope my turtle is ok. And I feel bad for setting him have to go.

    • @MsJubjubbird
      @MsJubjubbird Před 5 lety

oh sweetheart you are a special little snowflake. Animals are not allowed on planes unless they are approved assistance companions (ie seeing eye dogs). It's unhydenic to have animals in such close quarters with food service and they can carry diseases to other animals in the new area, whether you know it or not. Not to mention it's cruel to shove a turtle in a handbag and not nice for an animal to be subject to the changing pressure in a cabin. Plus cabins are cold and turtles like warm. As a general rule, do not put an animal on a plane unless it has to happen. Animals do not like planes. Clearly you really don't care about your animal if you think it's appropriate. Never travel in Australia or New Zealand. You won't make it. You can't even carry an apple interstate to prevent disease spreading.

I had a Monster(evil) goldfish named Bob once...got him at the fair along with 4 other goldfish and it stole fish food from the other fish until it was twice their size. Then Bob preceded to beat up, steal food, and then eat all 4 of the other goldfish. We then bought 2 sucker fish to clean the tank. Bob ate one but kept the other alive, probably to have a butler that cleaned up his "messes"(At this point we thought Bob was a truly evil cannibal mastermind) After 3 years we decided to get the biggest goldfish we could find(half Bob's size) but Bob didn't want any other fish in his big tank stealing his food so he beat the crap out of it when we weren't home, broke its fin and left it to die at the bottom of the tank. At that point we left Bob alone and for 7 years Bob grew until he was a little bigger than this goldfish at 3:42 in the video. Bob died then we buried Bob the Gluttonous because he would not fit in the toilet. I will never forget that evil demon...

I have a unfortunate story about this that still gets me really emotional
I was in my kitchen when my baby girls in the backyard were screaming and crying I ran outside and they ran passed me into the kitchen
I looked in the bushes and noticed this 2 ft long giant lizard it looked over me and I was so afriad I tried to run back
I heard the bushes moving loudly so it was right behind me unfortunately I trip and fell and I looked over....... this thing ran over my legs to my chest and was staring me straight in my eyes I was so frighten I yelled "WHAT DO YOU WANT!!!!" I met face to face with this lizard with his piercing eyes and he said " I need about tree fiddy" That's right 3 dollars and 50 cents It was then I notice he was a 21 ft tall creature from the pre historic era ......it was the Loch... Ness.... monster
I said "GODDAMN YOU MONSTER!!!!! Don't you most us are working people and can't just hand over monay....." I was gonna him a dollar but then he would of come back and assume I had mo!

^ it isn't technically a pet, if it's a native species. That implies someone made a pet of a wild animal, and if it's too domesticated, then it's got no natural skills necessary to survive out in its natural environment. So no, it should stay domesticated, or in a zoo I guess. Very unlikely it'd make it in the wilderness.

Do your research on pets before getting them. I do have a problem with Red eared slider turtles because even keeping them as pets require constant maintenance . They shit and piss in the water witch means you will get sick if you don't clean the tank and filter at least once a month or more. When they get to big I would suggest contacting habitats specifically designed to house them. Just passing off some friendly advice.

General rule is to never release any living thing (plants, animals, insects) in wild unless its native there. Ecosystem is really fragile thing and slow to adapt. Nature will adjust itself most of the time but it may take a looong time.
