Please DON'T Release Your Pet GOLDFISH! Or This Will Happen! (Underwater footage)

  • In this video we look at why you defiantly shouldn't release your pet goldfish! I hit the banks with some small frozen goldfish with the intention of showing what happens shortly after the goldfish enters the water. I targeted areas where goldfish are likely to be released such as residential areas and fairground car parks. I didn't take long before the pike wanted to make friends!

I am 55yrs old, when i was a kid there was a stretch of the local canal known as The Hotties, as Pilkngtons Glass Works used to put hot water in there from their cooling tanks. All yer round it was warm water, that stretch was know for massive tropical fish, that people had put in there. Sadly Pilkingtons closed the factory down and the canal returned to normal temperatures. But back in the 70s you didn't know what you was going to catch from there. Basically anything from a tropical fish tank.

I once saw a mate use a live goldfish as bait, he launched it out into the middle of a large resavoir, it was hit fast, but escaped and swam back about 50meters to where we were stood, and my mate retrieved it still alive. It lived a few months after as well as he decided to take it home again and put it in a tank.

Theres a small pond near my old stomping ground where people had been releasing goldfish rather than putting them into the nearby stream that feeds it, probably thinking that they would do better in the still water. They did. They did so well that they ate all the trout fry and pretty much everything else. The pond had been a spawning ground for trout, and now the population has been severly damaged, possibly permanently. There are terrapins in the canal too. they most certainly do not belong there. We have no idea what damage they will do to the eco system, if any, but the hope is that the pike eat them before we have to find out.

I used to live on the southern shore of Lake Ontario, USA. Many years ago we used to see what we called 'golden carp' (actually they were orange) mixed in with schools of carp cruising along the shore. Every once in a while I'd catch one they looked exactly like overgrown aquarium goldfish. (sometimes up around 14" or so long). That's how we spotted carp..look for the 'golden carp' there was usually larger regular carp cruising along with them. My theory is the 'golden/orange' carp resulted from released goldfish breeding with regular carp. This was back in the early 1970's I don't know if that occurs now I haven't seen any 'golden carp' in Lake Ontario in recent years.

You put the cut off trace through the Middle of the pipe, push this down the gullet. And the hooks get stuck In the Rubber, then pull back slowly. Comes out like a dream, with little distress to the fish. We made our own out of a 1/4" polypipe about 6" long, and a Rubber Bung on the end. You should look into getting or making one. They are native to no waters, they are man made, full of unhealthy fatty proteins, the predator fish get to know this and stop eating them over time, they then breed and consume all the food the native species eat, there are bodies of water all over the world taken over by goldfish, even bass lakes in the US, just search it on here.
