My biggest peeve with Bendis' Superman run isn't even the run itself, but rather it's effects on another series I adored. That series being Supersons, which was ended shortly after Bendis came on board with DC. While I'm not 100% certain about what caused Supersons to get axed, I don't think its a coincidence that Bendis promptly sent away Johnathan and aged him up shortly thereafter.

    • @HenT8991
      @HenT8991 Před 4 lety +2

      my answer exactly.
What's weighing Bendis down is his crutch at having to do some change (aged up Jon, Superman Reveal, New villains) that adds no substance, his excessive, immature, and wasteful dialogue and his general poor story telling..skipping what should be important events, his erratic slow pace on other scenes, and his ham fisting in of "his" stuff like Naomi, YJ, Legion, etc.
His main Superman books are really at this point just an advertisement for his stuff, leviathan, Naomi, YJ, Legion...
This man should not have the promotion he's been given. What the hell were they thinking? If they brought him in just for his connections, I raise my eyebrow at that too..a lot of those people I wouldn't trust to even clean my house, but perhaps I'm too harsh in that regard...

This doesnt allow for the stories to flow naturally, im always trying to figure out who that person is or what might be important for. Its also hard for me to relate or care for those characters, they have no background and might never get one, because there are so many new ones, there is no way all of them are going to stick around

I am ok however with Jon in the Legion, since that's really the only solution you can do now that he's aged up, although there were opportunities lost. Lois "leaving" Clark made no sense and only made things worse for their reputation. Jor-El's story as Oz was ignored but the ending to Jor-El's time on Earth was a good one, but didn't execute it right. As for Clark's secret identity, I'm still not sure. “The story I enjoy ended, so this is the new story.” Good point, but the thing is, Bendis robbed Jonathan Kent of years of story about him growing up. It is the equivalent of having one year of Dick Grayson as Robin, taking him away for 6 issues, and bringing him back from a 15 year old boy to a 20 year old being nightwing. Jonathan Kent growing up so fast feels forced rather than organic growth. If Bendis want Jon in the legion, fine, I actually like that idea, however I feel it could have been handled better. For starters, if Jon is going to stay in the future, don’t put him there until way later, like a couple of years, have him grow up normally as a teenager. When he eventually goes to the future, it will feel like a kid going to study abroad. As a student who studies abroad myself I can say that applying this premise to Superman’s family has a lot of potential. We get to explore how Clark and Lois miss their son and how Jon also feels homesick, how their relationship could change when Jon does come home for “vacation” If Jon grows up normally, we as readers will be more invested when he does go away because it feels like an actual part of life instead of being so forced like Bendis is doing right now. If Bendis really wants the legion now, seeing how in Doomsday Clock 12 the legion part of Geoff Johns’ Secret origin is back in cannon, Jon can simply do as Clark did and only go on weekends, we can see Jon paralleling Clark, see how Jon reacts to stuff in the future, we can even have Flashbacks when Clark was a kid because we never got to saw it in secret origin. We can even have Superman, now as an adult and dad, interacting when his childhood friends. There more ways to do this than Bendis is doing right now that would make fans happy.

The only way to fix the Jonathan Kent age up is giving him siblings. I'm prepared to give the identity reveal a chance as there is usually a plan for this to lead somewhere bigger. It could give the character a chance to level up. But it also outs Clark's son as Superboy and his wife as his co-conspirator who also shares his professional conflict of interest.

And I was really excited to seeing the two Superboys, Jonathan Kent and Conner Kent, to meet for the first time and seeing them have a brotherly relationship(cuz Bendis says he wants to see them fight, I really don’t want a battle between two Superboys just for the sake of having a battle). But unfortunately that’ll won’t be the case.Hopefully someone new writing Superman and Young Justice and retcon or fix it cause the biggest problem is that he too focused on what he was to do and doesn’t thinks about the stories he creates and ignore characters and settings that were being built up for rebirth. 😒😒

My thougths on Bendi's ''New age'' of Superman.
    On Beneath Jhon:
-HE WAS A GREAT OPORTUNITY TO DRAFT AN EMERGENCY OR EVENT NEW SUPERMAN REBOOT. Yes, I like his kid adventures but I really get interested when Bruce made the research and say he could be even stronger than clark. If someday a world ending crisis came to DC Universe, in the reboot it would be a complete fresh oportunity to Jhon take the cape and become Superman, It would have to be done in slow pacing, in slow burn, but it could be done, Jhon could be a great Supes with new stories and different from his father, but carrying the legacy of the family. Even if happens now I don't believe it, EVERY YEAR Jhon grows like 5 from 10 years, at this point someday in 3 years he will be an oldman, there is an extreme narrative hole there.
-Jhon not only help Clark and Superman to have new roles, being Clark on the role of Pa' Kent, having that aspect of his life we could understand some reasons of supes eternal optimism and keep foward even in the most dire of the situations. But more than that, HE MADE DAMIAN A LIKEABLE CHARACTER, for years Damian's personality has been a cause of division between fans, he is an insuferable brat, on some fair reasons because his backstory, but he needed an extreme Yin to his Yang, that was Jhon to him. Bendis could bring back somekind of ''supersons'', but it won't be the same thing again, it was a messed thing and has few to nothing purpose.
-BOYZARRO AND ROBZARRO GONE, yeah those were Gleason/Tomasi's new characters and their arcs were complete fun, Boyzarro was also like Jhon but also in oposite ways and also had a great potential. Every panel of Robzarro it's pure gold, you didn't knew if actually he was the oposite of Damian, or actually was Robzarro was that kind of bizarro character, they deserved better, seriously. Bendis just don't have use for them on his stories, and I don't know if that was a good thing or bad, because ughhhh...!
-SERIOUSLY WHY CONNER COULDN'T BE ON YJ/LEGION? Because he was in those ones before and Jhon not? I sincerely think Conner would be better as a Big Brother ''thing'' as the youngster guy on adventure with the little brother around that on ''Who is best for the cape?'' Superboy thing, They already did that, and Prime won on raw power aspect.
-JHON BEING TORTURED BY ULTRAMAN AND SUPERWOMAN ON HIS GRAMP'S ''MISTIC'' TRAVEL, just...no --_ This was the result of Clark and Louis parenting on Bendis Run. Neat. -_-
    On Beneath Clark:
-CLARK KENT IT'S NOT A WHITE LIE OF SUPERMAN, CLARK KENT IT'S THE SON OF JHONATAN AND MARTHA KENT. Pa' and Ma' Kent didn't grow Kal El, they didn't have the knowledge, or the beliefs to do that, Clark Kent it's the earth, mortal, normal, regular, nice kind of regular guy, that anchor to Superman to humanity. Most of the times Clark likes to be Superman and Superman Likes to be Clark, this is a thing taken from movies where most of the people start to criticize ''well if I were Superman I won't be that wimpy four eyes farmboyscout reporter''. Once upon a time, like even close to the 90's that was a Superman cliché, now we have all kinds of superguys with different personalities and motivations, most of them darker or grittier, so, you don't need to think that as a cliche or even a bad cliche, because now Superman can have that as his niche as superhero. So yeah, I think his secret identity revelation it's stupid.
-LOUIS AND CLARK RELATIONSHIP IS A MESS. We tought it was weird to see Superman/Wonder Woman, that's why it was rebooted, now we almost think those were good times, almost, if not were for those awesome stories of Rebirth (Seriously, Frank and his wife and Louis and his husband was an extreme, great example of how they were improved on the marriage).
-Superman doesn't care for his family, WOULD WE THINK HE CARES FOR THE WORLD? That's another problem, his reaction on Jhon's growing thing was dumb, he lost five years of his son's life and he was like ''meh'', he sees Louis running for stories on a predatory phase and he simple it's not there to express what he thinks about that, or that doesn't even matter.
-Finally, well, yeah, I think the best opening for Superman was on Rebirth where he goes to help everyone in the night and says good morning to Metropolis, you can start a movie with that panel, and on a personal thin, I like superman because he do absurd things like carrying a building on his back, or punching a guy with a finger, he does absurd things, writters think on him like a god between mortals or like a really absurd good guy, most of the time they think on him on the first one, and both lines on extreme are the death of the character.
I drop the book on Bendis run, its dumb, and loses more than he won on the long term.
