Wrong, lol...Tool's like the LAST band to read the lyrics upon your first listen...That's they DON'T INCLUDE their lyrics in their Album booklets. I believe Maynard has been on record saying that you should listen and feel the music before getting into the lyrics

@@scottkoppinger2595 While I agree it’s best to ‘feel’ the music then ‘understand’ it

With reaction videos people typically give it 1 listen. So while I think you’d agree that’s a travesty, especially when listening to tool, I think they need to have the ability to take in all they can get in that first listen.

    • @scottkoppinger2595
      @scottkoppinger2595 Pƙed 2 lety +1

@@Joe-bv7io Sure some bands they may only listen to once, but this is Tool, ha, I think it's very rare, especially for people who are musically inclined to just one and done their songs almost ever...Reading the lyrics can detract from the experience, since you're thinking about the meaning of things more than you're feeling the music.

Seen Tool live three times. Saw the Lateralus tour way back when, 9 days after 9/11. Normal concert, amazing concert because Tool was performing a lot of the Lateralus album but man I'll never forget the vibe that was in the air that night so soon after. Kind of like a deep breath and just feeling like things would get back to normal. Saw the 10,000 Days tour also and they did some touring the year before Fear Inoculum came out. I'm guessing kinda like working the kinks out after the looong break between albums. Just my opinion but 3 epic shows!!

A tool song is like skydiving for the first time. Let me explain. When you go on your first skydive they recomend that you do two, preferably in a row. The first one is such a raw rush of so many things that the brain doesn't remember most of it. You need that second one to fully experience it complete. For it to truly soak in.

Tool has achieved almost a cult-like status. Before they put out their music on CZcams and I guess Spotify, they had a more limited, but loyal fan base. I'm glad they changed their mind, now so many more can experience their unique sound. Maybe in a few years their music will heal the world, similar to The Wyld Stallions in "Bill & Tedd's Excellent Adventure". Whaddya think?

To be fair, I'm pretty sure they changed their mind fairly quickly after they initially committed to a 4 or 5 album contract that stipulated that none of their music could be sold in digital format. Tool was one of the bands that jumped on the "Napster panic" movement and their contract prevented any of their music from being sold digitally (and also prevented on-demand services from playing their music digitally). You can tell they didn't stick with that attitude for very long because a perfect circle was available on MP3 format from the get-go (so at least from Maynard's perspective, the negative attitude about digital music distribution had quickly changed). The release of Fear Innoculum was actually the final album under that particular contract. With that contract now completed with the release, they were no longer constrained and could go back and release their back log of albums on digital format.

    Angels on the sideline
    Puzzled and amused
Why did Father give these humans free will?
    Now they're all confused
Don't these talking monkeys know that
Eden has enough to go around?
Plenty in this holy garden, silly monkeys
Where there's one you're bound to divide it
    Right in two
    Angels on the sideline,
    Baffled and confused
Father blessed them all with reason,
And this is what they choose?
Monkey killing monkey killing monkey over
    Pieces of the ground
    Silly monkeys
Give them thumbs, they forge a blade
And where there's one they're bound to divide it
    Right in two
    Right in two
Monkey killing, monkey killing monkey over
    Pieces of the ground
    Silly monkeys
Give them thumbs, they make a club
    To beat their brother down
How they've survived so misguided is a mystery
Repugnant is a creature who would squander the ability
To lift an eye to heaven, conscious of his fleeting time here
Gotta divide it all right in two
Gotta divide it all right in two
Gotta divide it all right in two
Gotta divide it all right in two
Fight till they die over sun, over sky
They fight till they die over sea, over air
They fight till they die over blood, over love
They fight till they die over words, polarizing
    Angels on the sideline again
Benched along with patience and reason
    Angels on the sideline again
Wondering where this tug of war will end
Gotta divide it all right in two
Gotta divide it all right in two
Gotta divide it all right in two
    Right in two
    Right in two

Hello Brad & Lex, I just started watching your reactions and I liked your reaction to this Tool song. For me this song took me on a journey through time, the music was very primitive in the beginning then evolved into more complex and aggressive sounds. Then you bring in the Maynard's words talking about Angels on the side watching "us" monkeys in Eden where there is plenty for all but we divide it in two. Give "us" a thumb and we make a club to beat our brothers down because we want not one but theirs and ours. Then I thought about how our brain evolved the primitive part "base instinct," this is represented in the song as the primitive percussion, then we grew another layer of our brain for more complex reasoning, the music gets more complex but those same monkeys, "us" still fighting over borders that we create to divide in two ours and theirs. The angels are still watching from the sidelines wondering where this is going to. Tool provides the frequency and the words and when we hear their songs we begin to change. As a species we need to ascend. The earth has plenty for all the earth's resources are ours by birth and money was created to divide in two what we need from what they have. We should have a resource based economy, clean air and clean water basic life sustaining things that all of "us" monkeys require not desire.

    Favorite Tool song!
Think the key lyric people miss upfront
-Father blessed them all with reason-
After that missing piece it’s a pretty simple, and deep nugget to explore.

"Repugnant is the creature that would squander the opportunity to lift an eye to heaven conscious of their fleeting time here." - one of Maynard's best lyrics. One of my favorites Tool songs also...

@@ItsAlways710 right? Nice little dig I didn’t catch until many, many listens later. Same for drum fills, bass lines
changes the journey. And i catch new stuff every time I re-listen to a Tool song. Like, after 2 years I’m finally starting to “get” Invincible.

Maynard used to roam their AOL message board back in the early days of Tool. He made a deal to send you the lyrics but only if you sent him your version of what you heard first. Still have the copies he sent on the Zoo label letterhead. He thought it was more important for you to find your own meaning from the song

It's about Angels looking down at humans and seeing how they fight with each other over territory and resources when there is more than enough to go around. They watch as they build weapons to kill each other and mankind is constantly divided, unable to co exist with each other peacefully, always fighting over stupid little things.
