    Arizona bay I think means when the water washes away California. The water will wash up all the way to Arizona. Creating Arizona Bay.

  • @kevmon8137
    @kevmon8137 Před 2 lety +814

    When he mentions Arizona Bay he is talking about the San Andreas fault line and how close it is from breaking away from the United States and sending most of California into the Pacific Ocean. Therefore, Arizona will become part of the Pacific coastline. He hints at this when he says “followed by fault lines that cannot sit still”. Also if you want to check it out, on the cover of the CD album there is a holographic image of the west coast that shows the fault line disappearing into the ocean as you rotate it from side to side.

    Arizona Bay is a reference to Bill Hicks album from the 90’s. Bill was a satirical comedian who died in 94 but in his stand up he discussed wanting California to break off into the ocean. So that’s also why Maynard says “learn to swim” basically referring to the San Andreas fault breaking and dropping California into the Pacific Ocean.

    If you get a copy of the CD version of the album the piece of front cover uses 3D lenticular animation for the album art. You can take the insert out and put the different pages back in to see different animations, one of which is an aerial picture of Southern California/Arizona area and when you tilt the album back and forth the chunk of Southern California disappears and reappears.

    I was so waiting for you two do react to this one. The wait was well worth it. “LearnTo Swim” refers to California falling into the ocean. Without Cali Arizona now has a bay on the Pacific Ocean. “Mom” is also referring to Mother Earth in the song. Great video. It’s scary how this song fits the world we live in today. You should react to “Culling Voices” by TOOL off their newest album. It’s a very cerebral song and album.

    My interpretation is that Maynard wants things to change and hopes that mom (mother nature) will "... put it back the way it ought to be." through means of a flood which ties to why he calls the song Aenima (a combination of anima and enema). The song also hints this with use of the word flush. It's a massive analogy of how he views the materialism (the poop) of many of the people in Los Angeles and how he hopes that someone (mom/mother nature/the person performing the procedure) can get rid of (by causing a flood/by performing enema) their materialistic mindset and change. Those who change their minds (learn to swim) will then be left (left in Arizona which is not flooded due to elevation) to reflect on their past (flooded California). Hopefully maintaining a better sense of what it means to live.

    Maynard became close friends with a comic named Bill Hicks. Hicks felt very much the same about LA. One of his comedy albums was titled Arizona Bay and has a bit on it about wanting LA slipping into the sea. Even though their relationship was short; Hicks died in '94 of pancreatic cancer at age 32, in the months prior to his terminal diagnosis Tool and Hicks were working on plans to tour together. Of course that sadly never happened. Tool dedicated the album Ænima to Hicks, including abstract illustrations in the liner notes and incorporatibg samples of his very thought provoking material. While not known by the large majority of the public, just about every relevant comedian considers him ones of the greatest.
