Timber Frame | The Forest Kitchen | Off Grid Log Cabin Build, Ep.1 S1

- In episode 1 of the forest kitchen build, Cali my golden retriever dog helps me once again as I finally get started building the rustic, off-grid covered wilderness outdoor kitchen, starting with a log cabin or timber frame style pavilion to keep me dry while I build the off grid kitchen and then catch, cook and eat in it when it’s built. Other than my dog, I work on this log cabin kitchen alone and I realize now after editing the video and then watching it, that working alone is probably my biggest challenge, especially watching me lift those heavy, green timbers into place on the timber frame. I finally pull the old antique pulleys out of storage to help me with the next phase - raising the roof.

Installing the four corner posts of the pavilion proves to be very difficult due to the weight of them. I improvise to get them upright in the holes before back filling them with concrete. In order to make the posts last longer, I waterproof them using an ancient wood preservation method known as shou sugi ban in Japan.

Thanks for watching again everyone! This is the first episode of what I think will be a 10 part series showing the complete outdoor kitchen build, including the shelter, grill, rocket stove, countertop, sink and the highlight, the earthen (clay)oven.
If you haven't already subscribed, please do and hit the notification bell so you don't miss any episodes - I really appreciate it!
I'll be uploading random videos in addition to this series throughout the summer as I finish the cabin interior, fish, forage, cook, talk and start the next log and stone cabin. The workshop cabin is going to be multi-use so it will have a lot of interesting features not found in the existing cabin. Stay tuned... In the meantime, have a great weekend and enjoy what we here in North America consider to be the beginning of summer outdoors!
My Self Reliance
Im from N.Y. I'd give you a week of work free just to learn this craft(not sure what I'll learn in a week, but this experience would be priceless
Thanks for another great video, it amazing how you are able to accomplish such a hard job by yourself just using leverage and planning.
That dog is one heck of a happy dog.
Love watching you build all this stuff and watching Cali be about the happiest Golden Retriever I've ever seen.
My Self Reliance hi my names Aaron im from new zealand always watching you and learning from you im a builder aswell but still learning iv been building things and trying your technecks and i love it. Your awesome and people would be happy to learn from an amazing person. Good on you. Cant wait for more videos to come out. The seat in my profile photo is what i made from fire wood and pallets with bark around it. Always building in the garage everyday and try the skills from you that iv learnt, so thank you so much..
Good Morning Shawn,Mrs And Cali. Great Thing to, Find opening my UT. 😊 I look Fwd to all,Your Videos.
Have a Great Long,Weekend. From Southern Alberta 🍁! !
I think Cali the dog did an absolutely stunning job of supervising the whole thing, even lending a paw to help take away some of the branches and concrete bags.
When considering life's wonderful blessings, Cali is one. She is a video star.
I am a filipina and a city woman but when I started watching your videos .. I come to love nature thats why I decided to go with my colleagues on a vacation for island hopping where we experience everything manually done and not much electricity at all .. twas wonderful and quiet peaceful .. maybe thats why people there are more stronger and healthier and live longer too. Long Live Mr. Self Reliance ... God bless your heart.
I am the wife of a retired Architect , and I have become addicted to watching you build not only the Cabin, but now the kitchen with all the things of yesteryear that many of us never knew or have forgotten . It's a pleasure to learning and remembering the way my Grand Dad Lived back in the Caribbean ... He was one that held to the Customs of the olden day ... I can't wait to see finished projects... I agree with you on the “true nature” part. I believe people aren’t lazy or hardworking, if you are following your true nature (passion) you will work hard no matter what, because it won’t seem like work.
If you are not following your true nature is when lots of things start to collapse.
Shawn James
I've been on this earth for more years than I care to remember, but you have a wife and a dog that adore you and that's not difficult to see. You have contributed so much to my quality of life that I could never repay. I thought I had done it all, seen it all, etc. but you have taught me so much tuning in on a weekly, sometimes bi-weekly basis. You are the most grounded person I've had to pleasure to know and I loved the other one who had similar qualities to yours who has now passed onto a higher place. My weekend is not ccomplete without my SR and the added bonus of the pristine purity of Cali. TFS.
I thank God there are still people like you who respect and relish the true nature in us all!
I’m em pressed by your perseverance and knowledge...it’s evident your dog “Cali “loves you and you love her “ ....You are a gentle man ...a deep thinker and very intelligent.,God Bless you ...🥰🙏
I've followed a number of folks off-grid and homesteading, but yours is definitely a favorite channel for me. I don't care about reviews of this or that great tool. The click bait titles many folks use also turn me off. You simply do the work on your property, showing us without chatter how you create a lovely environment. Your relationship with Cali highlights who you are. You don't get frustrated when she wants to join in every new project. It is clear this dog knows she is much loved and cared for. And your musings at the end of some videos speak to wonderful human values... Self reliance is really where it is at, whatever that might look like in one's life. I'll be following you as long as you share videos of your life. Thanks much.
I agree 110%< Mr. James is the real deal!
Amen😊
I am grateful for your videos. I did some of this stuff as a kid with my parents in northern Alberta, we cleared land and built a cabin in the summers. I have kept up my wood skills over the years and now that the kids are off on their own I can go and build my own home in the woods. My challenge will be the heavy stuff, so I will have to be smart about it, and sort out the ways of using the rigging to get it done. It definitely won't be easy but you just take it slow.
I agree, the city life was never for me. All that matters can be found on the land. The call of a loon every now and then. The river. The small birds, the storms. We had no power and no running water in our cabin and those were among the happiest years of my life. I might do a youth hostel so that people who want to really get away from it all can come out and try it for a bit. And I really love Cali's spirit, she wants to be with you, she's there with you all the time, participating, not running away and getting into trouble. That's what my soul needs. The forest and a good buddy to share the work with. I am also grateful for your book recommendations. I have a small piece of land now, going up there to build a shelter out of all the cedar boughs I have, mid February forecast for -20. I wouldn't trade this for all the luxuries in the world. Thank you for being a guide.
Definitely blood and sweat. Cali helping the best she knows.
I particularly like the busy noises of forest construction accompanied by bird song and the rustle of the crushing of leaf litter as you move around. Buying woodland as a joint family project is attracting more enthusiasm as the prospect of an economic meltdown looms ever closer.
I watch your videos over and over again and I never get tired of watching Cali jump at the dirt you throw lol.
Another great video and look forward to the next one every Friday. Laughed out loud at Cali when she chased the dirt, took away the cement bag and was happy to get a piece of wood to chew on. What a fantastic friend you have with you up there! You appear so contented while workingon your projects, not like being in an office working for someone else. You appear at peace!
Amen to those last words. I never understood why people willingly worked behind desks in offices - that always seemed like self-imprisonment and -torture to me. Makes sense when you think about it as their path of least resistance to their nature though. People are so different, yet everyone is trying to convince you you're the same as them. I think figuring out what your nature actually is without being influenced externally is step one in finding your very own way and true happiness that lays along it.
Can’t wait for tomorrow when the next episode is available! Cali playing with the shovels full of dirt...soooo helpful and awwww she’s digging the footings for you too! What a good doggie she is!
Your video is so comforting. Whenever I was upset I would find peace here. Thank you so much for your work.
Every time one of your videos pops up, I stop what I’m doing and relax. It’s my little piece of heaven where I just enjoy the process in all its beauty. Your videos are filmed in such breathtaking splendor you can’t help but marvel at your craftsmanship. You’ve inspired me to pull out my paints again and quit procrastinating with these art projects I’ve been dreaming of doing. Continued blessings and good health.
Words of wisdom there at the end. People often focus on things that can prevent you from succeeding rather than things that can help. You can talk yourself out of anything. Most of the time the hardest thing to do is to simply stop thinking about it and get up and do it. You obviously have no problem with doing just that.
Amen
What a good Girl, helping Daddy dig holes. What a total love she is.
This kitchen idea is genius. Looking back when you started building the cabin and thinking wow what a man can create. Sky is the limit. This is KINGness!!
Lol, I'd call Cali ( daddy's helper). I adore him. Everyday I get to watch you build something is a good day for me.
Loved today's video. Granny fan
Each friday, after a week of school i come back home have lunch and than relax while watching your videos .
And what you do Mr Shawn is art , u are preserving how our ancestors used to build, work, and live . That's basically tradition and culture .
Also, since i am in scout i benefit a lot from watching you , i get to learn some new tricks that i can use when i go camping .
So all in all, thanks a lot for all the hard work you put into the channel. I love watching your videos and i always wait your uploads patiently.
And if i ever got the chance to travel to canada i'am gonna make sure to pay you a visit .🙌
I watch your videos and am very envious. I used to live in Ely, MN for a number of years where I encountered many a log cabin but nothing as wonderful as what you are doing. Those cabins I saw in Ely were not built with the heart and soul as yours has been built. Your videos make me want to overcome some of my physical obstacles and strive for that path of least resistance but rewarding due to the work involved in doing so!
Thanks Shawn for kicking a 49 yr old, disabled guy, in the butt to focus on his passion of custom fishing rods and tackle!!
you're like a Canadian Kevin Costner but you've leveled up your woodworking skills. 10/10
Omg! That is hard work lifting those hard rocks. Autsch, my back! Cali and help? I had such a helping dog once. I put plants in my garden and she walked behind me and pulled them just as quick out. Lol!
OMG, that throwing the tape measure was awesome. Self-Reliant is right.
Hi, how much work ... and all alone, by yourself, without your wife as a mental support, I am impressed with your ability and willingness to create and build. I think there are not many people like you on the face of the earth. I've always been of the idea : whatever you create in life, that you have, nothing else. Anyway, congratulations.
I think everyone likes watching you work ( including myself ) because hardly anyone does this anymore. Life for most has become all about jobs, commuting, cell phones and constant noise and technology. This has GOT to be fulfilling for your soul...complete peace and quiet. A sweet dog that's a joy to watch with you and hard work. I've had my 13 yr old watch you too. He actually opted to watch an episode of this with me instead of gaming. 😃 Great channel. I'm originally from upstate N.Y. and looking at your surroundings makes me miss the mountains. Beautiful little place you picked.
Cali sure helped with digging! Thank you for sharing your videos with us!
I really enjoy watching how you work the wood to your best advantage. The logs seem to want to be sawed, chipped and scrapped into the finished product!! Watching your companion chase the wood chips puts a bit of humor into the video also. Waiting for episode 2...
Shawn, I neaver get tired of watching you build. Thanks
I’m always impressed by how quiet you are. If I was working alone like that, I’d be talking to myself the whole time.
I know right? I'd be singing as loud as I could
lol I'd be dropping my cuss words here and there as I work too
The modern world is full of noise, why fill the tranquility of his place with unnecessary distracting sounds and thoughts. He's focused and calm, it's probably how he's able to get so much of this done?
If you d take your beginners attitude seriously, one would never be able to play piano by heart
@@huberthubert860 ?
Cali helping clear up and dig holes, such a sweet clever dog. Shaun you are unreal!!! I fund it amazing how you build on your own with very heavy material you sure do know how to use your skulls to get the jod done. I hope your wife gives you a full body message when you arrive home after a day of building. 😎😎 from FL. Usa
Hello your eyesight like mine.. GREAT WATCHING❤
Thank you for sharing your videos, and Cali.
Have to love that Canadian shield... dig dig dig.. rock... dig dig..root.. dig dig dig .. boulder. Nice job yet again chum. Keep it up!
It's great to know people love doing things outside no matter what it is
Love you and your 🐕 always doing something together. Beautiful!!!!!
You & Cali amaze me the work you do together! The blackening of the posts....making them withstand the soil rot? I envy you your muscle! l'm a woman & l keep up my place myself (building walls, cutting up fallen trees etc.) and most of the time the rough part is the lack of strength l have. Now l'm 75 and still doing my own upkeep. l learn so much by watching you do these things, thank you!!!! gratefully....Judie
Judie...woman after my own heart! 71 year old single Gramma lady here. Have a farm, no help. Splitting winter wood right now by hand. Don't you know that the 70's are the new 50's!!! Next the hay will be gotten and Bob will help put it up. (Bob is a old, much loved 743 Bobcat). The secret is to work smart...think it through before jumping into action. Hardly anything that can't be done when you put your mind to it!
Judy, Judy, Judy Hi Judy , God Bless You , 🐰🌷🐣Happy Easter To You🐣🌷🐰!!!👋
I love Cali’s idea of helping she’s thinks that you are going to cook something nice for her in this kitchen!!
Life it's self is a HUGE challenge and is, what you make it. The biggest challenge is fighting through all the distractions. It amazes me at awe with your carpentry and know how to create something out of nature all with hand tools as life was meant to be and created from. Keep chugging along and thank you for sharing.
"Anything you can dig, I can dig better" says Cali, and the look on her face was priceless when she found that stone for you. You know Shawn, if I'd have tried that with my tape measure I'd have had it in a million kinks. Nice throw. Another great video but let me just say that my back started hurting just watching you lift one of the logs, never mind all 6 of them. 😃
i love that you do everything without power tools. the true definition of self reliant!
Cali and Scout are two of a kind! Always wanting to be chasing things!
Its always a good Friday when we have "My Self Reliance" video
I have worked with my hands all of my life. Even when I was the team leader or foreman I still made sure that I had physical work that I did. I can’t imagine working in an office to me that would be death. I like your videos because like you are doing I to work alone mostly. Even in the part time job I do now (I retired in 2013 but still have to do something) there are other guys there. But I build the equipment mostly by myself. The call me the old man there and are often asking me how to do things. In my work I weld mostly stainless and I do sheetmetal work and machining and do all my own layout. So I see a lot of me in what you are doing. Thanks for the post watch them from beginning to the end and like it all.
You two keep the world in balance the dog plays all day and you work all day
Totally agree. Life sucking cities, malls, empty eyes. I love to have projects that I design. Thanks for sharing.
Wedges of wood can be very handy on uneven ground under the stepladder.
You are really amazing! I know what you're doing is really tiring. Cali is so funny and cute, he is in the middle of everything you do.
Once again another great episode Shawn. That Cali sure is a character digging out small boulders or digging out a depression then laying down and taking a snooze in it. Or right there at the ready when you're chipping out a notch on a corner post to take over and chew on as she winds down from her hectic day. Yeah Cali is a corker to be sure.
You're incredibly gifted. I grew up in a similar environment in Nyanga (Zimbabwe) and we had to fend for ourselves. I left that life when I was 22 for the city. I have always missed my self since then.
Once you have a free soul, you'll always pine for it.
Thank you for sharing.
I humbly thank you.
I agree Shawn the path of least resistance is the way to go can't wait to see the next episode of the outdoor kitchen
The dog is super cute, and really contributes to these videos!
i love cali to see cali helping you
I love how you include your dog. She is beautiful and looks so happy! Thank you for letting us take this life journey with you. You inspire me! 🐕🍷🌳🌲❤✌
Relaxing is the right word... thanks for all your videos..I'm from Mexico and living in city of 22 Million people is totally different, I really enjoy the sound of the wood when you are working on it.. and for sure I love Cali!!
Looking forward to see what is coming.
Best regards
I'm watching from Germany and my English is not good but I wanted to tell them, I love their videos. Gladly more of it.
Jen Tem
MY DEAR JEN,
DON'T PUT YOURSELF DOWN.
YOUR ENGLISH IS
QUITE GOOD.
I WISH MY GERMAN
WAS THAT GOOD.
ALSO, I AGREE
WITH YOU, THEY ARE
MAKING GOOD VIDEOS
AND I CANNOT WAIT FOR THE NEXT ONE.
HAVE A WONDERFUL
WEEKEND, MY DEAR.
☺😊😀😃
Shawn, you are my spirit animal, man. I enjoy watching your videos, getting to see how you work out the solutions and seeing the results. It is an honor to be able to watch you work on your projects. Thank you so much for sharing this with all of us and showing us that yes, it takes guts, blood, sweat, tears, headaches, muscle pain, etc, to trully chase our dreams. Watching you is an inspiration to me and to all of us. You, sir, remind me of what it takes to do it and to make it happen. Here's to living a life fully realized. Thank You.
Shawn, Cali definitely stole the show in this video. Love it! She is such a sweet pup!
I watched "2 Years Alone" some time ago. My 3 year old grandson was with me one night and I got tired of watching his kiddy shows and asked if he wanted to watch someone build a house. "Ok". So I pulled up "2 Years Alone". He sat on my lap and watched fascinated until his Mom came for him. He asked a guzillion questions. He wanted to know about everything you were doing and why. I answered as best I could. Since then he has asked to see "the red man build his house" several times. I didn't know which show he wanted at first. But he told me some of the things you did and I remembered. On my computer screen your face is very red. That's where he got the "red man" idea from. I've not corrected him because I want him to want to watch this type of show more than some of the programs that pass as kiddy shows. I've gotten him to watch several other 'building' shows since then but if he asks for one it is always his "red man building his house". Thank you. Good luck in the future and God Bless!
You sound like a wonderful grandmother. Thanks for giving your grandson such solid foundational content which will shape the type of man he will become and what he will value in his life. Keep it up!
Betty Harrell n
Betty Harrell, you couldn't steer you grand son any on any better path than getting interested in this awesome guy and what he is into and how he reacts to nature, much better this than what the younger ones have on offer these days, subliminal programming with what seems to be gender changing ideas!!
Lol- be careful on that ladder Mr. James!!!! I’m not interested in watching a ten part series on you building a bushcraft wheel chair!
Great video as always!
Respect for you.... you are an modern hero with ancient knoledge
My wife and I enjoy your video very much. You have great skills as a carpenter and philosopher. I almost forgot your cooking skills as well. Don't ever stop following your dreams you're on the right path.
I love what you are doing and showing the rest of us. You remind me so much of my brother Dave who also has the ability to break down woodworking projects and make things simple, logical, strong and long lasting. Thanks for sharing so much with the rest of us.
I luv the way your dog supervises your work lol.
grandn 86 cali sure likes to catch the dirt when you throw it!
She's not supervising.... She's "helping"!
And inspects
Your CZcams channel is my Favorite.... I'm 54 years old and am going in your direction.... I'm very lucky to soon have the same ability to live free and on my own land .... I have building experience but I would never say at high professional level .... but I'm learning .... your show has taught me a lot about using what's around me .... I have much more to learn ... but I'm a Very fast learner ... and you are positively helping ... I may use more of my power tools to get done faster .... and I will have help since my lady will be there with me ... I can't wait to accomplish what I've learned from you my brother 😁☕
The bucket of pulleys got me excited about the possibilities for lifting and convince
Oh lord...Cali is so funny. So interested in dirt digging.
Cali sure puts her all into trying to help you out. The retriever in her was going all out against that dirt and debris flying off your shovel. Looks like good and fun hard work putting in those posts and raising those rails. Thanks for sharing.
Amen to that message of the week. Your life observations are profound.
Truth in your reflections as always. Not only are you handy Shawn but you really are a smart guy. Thanks for the great video!
I don’t know which is more impressive - you skill level or energy. Wish I had just a portion of either. As usual, a very enjoyable video 👍🏻
Hi Shawn , good to see your videos and the life long dream that you live ,I’m back to work now after my injury on my motorcycle last October , your videos over the winter has been a great comfort to me as I was laid up for some ,looking forward to seeing more of your videos, all the best Graham . UK.
Wonderful to be a part of your living your passion: creating, building, filming it all and sharing it. From the bottom of my heart, thank you, Shawn.
There's just something so soothing and relaxing about watching these two. Love how they you can only hear the sounds they make and their surroundings.
Cali Is A Helpfull Dog
Amazing work.... and to have to video it with several cameras and constant work with video/audio in mind as well is just amazing. Thanks for your hard work!!
I like your manliness... I know saying that is not "politically correct" in todays world. But seriously, you are one hard working, intelligent, determined, focused, patient, yet sensitive man. Your "kind" that is a real man are becoming a lost "breed" in todays world. As an "old school" traditional" woman I enjoy watching you work. Seeing what needs to be done, planning it and then simply pressing on until you finish what you've started. Thanks for sharing your life adventure.
Im hilling now for watching ur video. I love nature and natual life. there is no gas no electricity no money. good.
I look forward to part 2, take care and many thanks for your vlogs and chats.
Now we are talking! Already cant wait for the next uploads =)
Thanks for sharing this video Shawn...Hardworking! You are super human!👍👊!
I go to the gym often, but this ....this is next level workout. 👍
I hit the like button before watching the vids now cos if you know its My Self Reliance, you know you're going to like it!
Thanks!
30 seconds in and already giving this vid a thumbs up. I know its quality and I love watching you do what you do. Your skills amaze me.
Watching your videos is a relief from my job, where I do not see any progress. Seeing you lifting these boulders, these heavy timbers, but seeing actually that there were no poles in the ground and after a time, there a standing four of them, connected by others is just awesome.
I can work literally for 40 hours a week and my work desk looks all the same. I cannot even tell friends or family what I really did in this time. I just sat there at my desk and tried to fix some IT problems.
Building something like you did, is not possible here where I live. You need a permission for everything, even if it is on your ground. So I enjoy your work, and just learn a bit about it. And perhaps one day, I can use bits of your experience to create something out of wood, too and use it in my four walls. Like a ladder or that working bench of yours.
Your dog is awesome, I like his / her smile.
It's like a view of the past on how our ancestors had to deal with clearing acres of land to farm really enjoy your videos. and love your dog she's just so funny to watch
Callie Snaps her 1st Chalk Line 🎗
Thank You Callie...
for all the Comic Relief 😆
This is the kind of life I dreamed to have but hopefully I can at least experience even for a short moment. Looking forward for more videos, I love watching what you do and Cali 😊🙏🏽
Dogs are smart observant beings. Someday her descendants will build great shelters from dug up bones and twigs. You're a great teacher.
Glad to see you now have a dog with you staying back in the woods like that. I grew in rural Ontario and would never live alone in the bush like that without a good dog (or two..or three).
Cali is definitely helping you , very smart dog , she loves being your pet .🐕😍
Great videos. Cali just has to be by your side, sometimes too close, but she listens when you tell her to move. You get so much done, but the videoing has to make the job slower. The editing and uploading takes time, but that's the bonus for your followers. Thank you for this series, and God Bless.
What makes your videos perfect and superior to others of the same kind is not only your work-focused angle and awesome nature shots - but the perfect cut. The scenes proceed before it gets boring. The viewer experiences every single step of your work/adventure without having to endure long monotone scenes.
Please keep it up. A big fan.
I respect you, he is a "Master" I admire him, thank you for your videos.
Absolutely amazing, Shawn. You are a fantastic survivor and builder. Ideas always cooking in your head and a great human being to boot. It is such a pleasure to watch you and sweet Cali makes me laugh! Thank you.
a good start to the morning ... coffee .. and a new video to relax while i wake up .... as for the bugs .. short term ... Off Bug lanterns are awesome .... long term ... make your own Cintronella candles to use in the off lanterns .... I know the off lanterns work for a good 10 feet downwind ... and they provide a nice soft light at night ... and are safe in a tent ...
.
I see Cali knows when you have too much water ... so she adjusts it as needed ;)
.
looks good so far ... cant wait 'till the next part ;)
I've got to say, I have no talent in building anything of significance, but your channel is a breakthrough in my daily routine. Just as you work, I watch your videos calmly, with no distraction, its even a small miracle that I manage to function without my smartphone the whole time. Your videos are what is called - ZEN time! Keep up the good work!
Paradise...just so beautiful !!! 🌲🌲🌲
