    About 1954, as a teenager I was at Grasmere for a weekend visit. All one afternoon, Avro Lancasters were flying down the valley, low over the lakes, then coming round again for yet another pass. Unknown to us at the time, they were being filmed for "The Dambusters" movie - it was an unforgettable experience.

    I can imagine that sometimes a conversation in the RAF might go something like this:
    "Well, Flight Lieutenant, you have two duty choices: one is to transition to the F-35 Lightning, the most advanced aircraft in the RAF, and the other is to learn how to fly the Lanc.."
    "Lancaster!! Lancaster!! I'll fly the Lancaster!!"
    What a beautiful sight to see and hear-- Spitfire, Hurricane and two Lancasters.

      @bfmcarparts Před 9 lety +8

      ***** Hello Richard,
      Here's what caught my attention of young Jordan's portion of this video. There is a nice balance (50/50) of the sky and the hill background. It really emphasizes the fact that these aircraft are barely above the horizon, and these hills change their acoustics. On the second pass he made use of what he saw from the first pass and made the subject well-centered in the frame and as soon as FM213's nose appears around the valley wall, Jordan adjusted his focus from just PA474 to include both aircraft centered. Then as the aircraft fly by, he changed his attention from the aircraft to the environment they are flying in by panning out to include more scenery. Very smooth camera work here Jordan!

      Thank you. It was a very long wait (we arrived around 8am) but thoroughly worth it. Just a shame that the Vulcan didn't make an appearance whilst returning from the Southport airshow....

      @@snapper8v yes I saw them all together at Waddington. I feel they missed a trick by not returning over Waddington once they had all formated. You had to go to the war memorial to see that, and the local police In their wisdom prevented anyone from leaving the car park we were in for what seemed like hours. Instead of allowing everyone out in one go and getting it over and done with, they dragged it out until it started to conflict with rush hour traffic. Totally unnecessary in my view,, and bad enough to take the shine off what was otherwise a very enjoyable and historic event. In fact that was one of the benefits of seeing the lancs at the dams iirc no police traffic control to spoil everything😊

    To think that Hundreds of these Bombers took off at once, 4 Merlins are enough for the shivers, I can't even begin to imagine a single mission for them.

    Absolutely awesome.... but it shows how slows these planes were and an easy target for AA and an me109... needed balls of steel to be in one of them...

    I was in the air cadets back in the late 80s and was fortunate enough to be allowed to go with a small group to see inside of our city of Lincoln Lancaster and sit in every seat and included the tail end gun chair baring in mind that the actual hero’s that flew these amazing beauties sat on their parachutes if they had them. I can’t imagine some of the youth of today if they were in the same situation actually run to the plane to risk everything. We owe so much to our grandparents for the bravery they shown and not asked for a safe space or mobile phone.

    Hopefully in 6-7 years time they will do this again but with NX611 "Just Jane" leading once they finish making her airworthy. Will be epic to hear 12 merlin engines roaring past in sinc

    Incidentally one of the other lakes the Dambusters used for training was the Eye Brook reservoir near Uppingham, there's a plaque there commemorating the fact.

    The only bad thing is they didnt drop the the same height for the drop as the dambusters did. The roar of the Merlins would have been so much greater.
