Easy setting levels for your patio

- 1. Determine the slope: The first step in setting levels for your patio is to determine the slope of the ground. This will help you determine how much you need to adjust the levels to create a flat surface. Use a level or a string line to measure the slope.
2. Mark the levels: Once you have determined the slope, mark the levels for your patio. This can be done using stakes and string lines, or by marking the ground with spray paint. Make sure the levels are clearly marked and easy to see.
3. Excavate the area: Next, excavate the area where your patio will be located. This involves removing any grass, weeds, or debris, and digging down to the desired depth. Use a shovel or a mini excavator to do this.
4. Add a base layer: Once the area is excavated, add a base layer of gravel or crushed stone. This will help to create a stable base for your patio and prevent it from shifting or settling over time. Use a compactor to compact the base layer and ensure it is level.
5. Lay the patio: Once the base layer is in place, you can start laying your patio. Start at one corner and work your way out, using the marked levels as a guide. Use a level to ensure that each piece is even and flat.
6. Adjust the levels: As you lay each piece of the patio, you may need to adjust the levels to ensure that it is even with the surrounding pieces. This can be done using a rubber mallet or a block of wood to tap the piece into place.
7. Fill the gaps: Once your patio is laid, you may need to fill in the gaps between the pieces. This can be done with sand or gravel, which will help to stabilize the patio and prevent weeds from growing.
Remember, setting levels for your patio is an important step in creating a stable and functional outdoor space. Take your time and make sure the levels are accurate and easy to follow. With the right techniques and materials, you can create a beautiful and long-lasting patio that you'll enjoy for years to come - Jak na to + styl

Quick question if you don't mind please...I'm putting down a patio next weekend for a friend and her neighbor has already put down a sub base which is about 70mm thick and has been compacted with the wacker plate and I'm just wondering is the 70mm enough or do I need to dig down deeper and add more depth to the hardcore?I have no problem laying the slabs as I'm a mason but just want to double check that sub base as I normally would do 100mm but this is already down
Loving the videos🇮🇪
@@frankieob100 of you could add 30mm stone dust to it that would give a bit more strength. Is the dpc against the house height a issue or is it separate to the patio. Stone dust compacts down really well anyways.
@@tidybrickslandscaping it's not against the house, there's a Aco drain after being laid up against the footpath outside the back door and the patio will be against the drain then.fall is set out for the patio too.its all good for height so it starts off against the drain but ya I could get away with another maybe 10 or 20 mm of that dust.ill have a good full bed of mortar on it too.Its a nice thick limestone slab.

Lovely job done there mate! If i just want to lay a few slabs or paving blocks as a pathway would i still need a good sub-base (type 1) or can i just go with a sharp sand n cement mix on top of some firm ground?
You could depending on the ground e.g. hard clay but otherwise you do risk the chance of it subsiding and cracking 👍🏴

Great channel lots of info 👍 I’m laying a rectangular shaped patio half way down my garden which is long and narrow. Does it matter whether the slope is front to back or side to side? The short side of the patio is across the garden. Thanks
If it’s really narrow and like 1 tile wide you could level with it. Otherwise as long as the water can run off onto a grass area it’s fine 😂🏴
Hi Scott, great video. Can I use upright paving slabs instead of blocks for the retaining wall and would a mix of type1 & postcrete be suitable to keep them in place?
Yeh sounds fine strong enough to contain the patio edge but only use postcrete I wouldn’t put mot in it you want all the strength I’d say doing it that way 👍🏴
Vielen Dank für alles. 👍
Many thanks 👍🏴
If you were building a raised patio from scratch would you build the perimeter block up proud of the type 1 fill or level with it? Say 60mm below the finished tile level? On this video you’ve it set higher than the fill but then you’ve very little mortar around the edges. Great videos.
Do it the same way I did it in that video the block work higher than the hard-core prime the top of the wall lay some cement then prime the tile bish bosh 👍🏴
Hey Scott great video and lovely work! I was considering doing a patio off the back of our new house but I'm a bit nervous. The garden is on a slope so will have to build a small retaining wall around it, the question I have is do the retaining walls coming off the house have to have a fall off as well? Not sure if this is a silly question? Thanks
Yes to a certain degree but then depends if you wanted a step at the end of the patio or you had a feature wall but preferably yes include the full so the water can run straight off the patio over to the lawn area 👍🏴
@@tidybrickslandscaping Thanks a million for the advice Scott , much appreciated , cheers
Hello mate, brilliant video as always! wish you was down this way todo our garden!
Do you have any videos of how you did the wall? we have a similar project we are doing a small retaining wall for, do you just put the mot base in and compact it or do you need to put concrete in first? so many say different things.
No MOT needed under the concrete for the wall only the patio needs mot 👍🏴
Great video thanks mate
Thanks Ashley glad you found the video helpful 👍🏴
Great video.. Two things to ask.. Is that primer just cement? I was going to pave directly onto concrete that forms the base of my back yard.. Is that advisable and is the mix still 4:1..? Cheers mate.
Yes I suppose the primer is cement based and yes 4 to 1 ratio sharp sand is the preferable mix 👍🏴
Thank you 👍
No worries! 👍🏴
Great video. I’ve seen lots of bad paving prep or no prep at all. Prep makes a project. Thanks.
Thanks Alan much appreciated it’s always about the prep 👍🏴
Hey scott absolutely fabulous work. Admire your passion for the job. Lovely choice of tiles. I know you mentioned the steps are laid by a Marshall's sympthany decor. I can only seem to find the 900 by 500 tiles. Donyoubhqve to cut them down to strips I.e for steps? Surely they do a size you got there but I just cant find them. Thanks lee
No I had to cut every tile down into three strips that was the dimension you gave but I already knew that 👍🏴
@@tidybrickslandscaping thanks for the reply scott. Very helpfull
Thanks!
No problem! 👍🏴
Hi Scott. Hope you're well. Quick question for you. I'm building an outdoor kitchen with patio area. The kitchen itself needs a 4" concrete blab, whereas the patio will just be a full bed on type 1. Should I build he slab first then put in the type 1, or whacker the type 1 all over, and then dig out 4" where the slab is to go? Cheers mate.
Hi and yes I’d build the slab first for shaw get it done so you’ve got another level to whack too then every little helps I guess 👍🏴
Not all Marshall installers are the cream of the crop, the ones that done my back patio done a pretty shitty job to be honest. For a start the pointing was different levels and thicknesses, the steps aren't the same height, the brick work wasn't that good and the existing drains are not level with the path but below so a possible trip hazard. I'm always blown away with what you achieve and the little details you do to make the job that much better. I'm just hoping when the time comes to get the front sorted you will be back to full health and ready to start the patios and drives again.
Sorry to hear about the issues you’ve had with the installer on your project !! There’s always one hey and as for my recovery well 2 more weeks in a cast then 6 weeks in a boot and hopefully a spring in my step after that 👍🏴

I have a concrete path in my front garden that is level. But it looks cack. Is it possible to put paving slabs on top without putting down a sub base? Great video.
Most likely you will be able to yes as there should be hard-core underneath the concrete as well and at the end of the day it’s always about the base 👍🏴

Scotty, here's another crap details question from the Welshman in England! When attaching the batons to the walls what size screws, rawl plugs and drill bits are you using. My effort just fell off the wall! 🤣 When I eventually get this finished I'll invite you over for a BBQ and beers!
Pre drill the holes and make sure you use plugs takes time but a absolute fail safe way of doing it for the diy er 👍🏴
@@tidybrickslandscaping used Rawlplug nylon frame fixings (80x80mm) in the end after forensically looking at your video. So here’s the thing, being a mere mortal, I didn’t even know that hammer in frame fixings were even a thing until today! So I pre drilled the CLS batons with an 8mm wood bit at each end and then levelled the baton with a long sprit level and the. Using an 8mm masonry drill bit and a hammer drill used the existing holes in the baton to position the respective holes in the block work wall and then used the frame fixings with a hammer to fix the baton to the wall - not forgetting the spacers (made from a cut down piece of CLS).
@@andytamlyn sounds like you mastered it congrats just got to lay it now 👍🏴 keep me informed
Top tip get travis to stack the mot 1 on top of each other, slit the top bags at your leisure - most of it goes in the barrow. Bottom bags slit and get shovelling

Hello,
I have a 30m2 beam and block patio area, built as part of my extension. I’m thinking of ideas and ways in which to finish this area and how to approach it with the block and beam. The B&B naturally has a little flex in it therefore I want to proceed with the correct method to ensure tiles and joints don’t crack. I’m looking at a porcelain tile finish. Will this require a fibre screed like I had internally then to lay the porcelain with a cement mix? Advice would be useful from anyone who has experience of this. Thanks
I’ve never laid a patio on block and beam before if you could possibly take any flex out of it that would always help if you can reach underneath for some support if you can lay on a cement bed and you should be fine 👍🏴
at 13.50 the guy singing the background music had an epileptic fit.
😆 you might be right 👍🏴
Should the string line be sat on top of the tile or just above to make it level? I'm attempting a small floating patio so I won't have the wall to attach to
Ideally streamline slightly higher than the tile just ping the line now and then to see if it sits well.
If you could rig something up to attach line 2 is that would be a great help 👍🏴

Hey Mate. Lovely work.
I'm from Australia, and would never dream of laying a grouted tile on a mortar bed on roadbase for fear of cracking in the joints! We always lay on a concrete slab and glue down. Even for pedestrian use only.

Great video, which has made me very nervous about the guys doing my patio. Where are you based and area covered please?
Hi Tom sorry to hear what you’re going through with the company you’ve employed. What do you think your current issues are so I could possibly guide you the right way maybe
And I’m based in Cardiff 👍🏴
Thanks for your prompt remarks. My concerns are that they have only just started the small pathway, which leads to the patio, but I can see that the pavers are all out of line, some are loose, the alignment of the pavers are out of line and they are not flat. I’m not sure they have prepped the base correctly either. This, with just a path has totally freaked me prior to commencing the patio which is approx 70m squared, so I’m dreading the end result. Have you got a company email that I can send you photos? I’m seriously contemplating stopping it and starting all over again. I’m sure you can understand my frustration and anxiousness.

Hi mate, what depth of concrete are you putting in for the wall footing? And is it best to use high density blocks? Any preference of 100mm or 140s? Thank you.
100/150mm of concrete is fine with 100mm blocks would be enough I’d say 👍🏴
@@tidybrickslandscaping cheers for taking the time to reply mate. If we are building a wall along the front and up one side are you sloping the side wall slightly to incorporate the fall? it's only a single block high!
