Ken:I just got my 58mm Voightlander yesterday, which I was able to get out of Japan. Everything you said about this lens is true. They are rock solid, high quality, and take great pictures. I have taken about 50 shots with it so far as test shots, and they are sharp! How sharp? I cut my finger on the RAW files; that's how sharp. This is going to be a great lens which I see using as long as I'm around. This thing is built to last 50+ years.

Not that impressed, we tested the 58mm Voigt against the Nikon 60mm Macro D and could not see a significant difference in the final image that warranted the hype, so returned it along with the other one that is recommended that we did not bother to unpack.

Any thoughts on the Voigtlander 75mm f2.5 and 90mm f3.5 for Nikon f mount? I would also ask about the 125mm f2.5 and 180mm f4, but those are well beyond my price range.

Before I watched your videos, I had got the older pancake 40 f/2 , some years later after watching your videos, I grabbed the last copy of the 28 f/2.8 pancake I could find, as well as the newer version of the 58 1.4 . I got no clue why Voigtlaender discontinued these magic lenses (I cannot find a 20 3.5 anywhere) !

Hello Ken, love your videos, they are the best. What do you think about the Voightlander 90mm f/3.5 Lanthar SL-II, and the 180mm f/4 Lanthar SL for the F-mount ? I'm using a Nikon D810, and I already have the Nikkor 180mm 2.8, a superb lens. I found this Voightlander lenses in a store in mint condition. Thanks, and keep the good work. Hi Ken! Thanks for this review. I am using Voigtlander lenses for my MILC body, but also considering buying some for my DSLR (which is not dead!). However, I am concerned if the lack of calibration of such a lens to the DSLR body would result in losing some of the sharpness performance. (the focus assist uses the same AF system of which the accuracy depends on calibration to the body) What do you think?

Are there any advantages to adjusting aperture using an aperture ring versus adjusting in camera at F-22 locked. My thoughts are that it should be better using the ring since the aperture physically moves but is "in camera" really equal? Please give detailed explanation.

  • @rickcash3065
    @rickcash3065 Před 5 lety +1

I am getting very confused. I have the Nikon 7100. I don't plan on keeping 10 or more lenses. Hoping to find 5-6 for all my needs. So 40mm, 50mm and 58mm, seem to be very similar in usability. I have the Tokina 100mm, Nikon AIS 80-200 2.8 and the Nikon 35mm 1.8mm. So unless I need to exchange the 35mm for a 40mm, that rules that one out. The 100mm will be my macro and portrait lens, plus a lot more. I want a wide, but the 20mm is a 30mm on my camera, which I don't think is a true wide. And I want more zoom, like a 300mm or 400mm. My son no longer plays sports, but he is in drama, where I would like to take photos in med light at best and a lot of stage lighting.
I wish you could make more category videos. To me, 35mm to 60m, is all one class, so what is the best value here? According to you, not being an idiot would require me to buy at least 20 lenses. The 4 categories I am trying to fit are, wide, all day lens, variable, and a zoom. The 100mm is staying on my camera most of time, but I can see a 50-60 would be better. Sometimes I can't get far enough away. My 80-200 is great for variable, but heavy, and my 35 is great, but I have to get too close sometimes.

I buy a lot of 3rd party manual lenses in Nikon mount, even though I shoot Canon, because I can use all Nikon lenses on my Canon body and if I want to sell the lens I'll have more potential buyers since the lens can be used on more bodies.

Hello Ken, very very nice video showing these gems. I knew that Voigtlander made some high quality glass but haven't heard from them in a while and didn't saw any advertisement for these very high quality lenses (now that is a damn shame!!!).
Anyway, I got the 58mm F1.4 (the older one since the focus ring does not have that Nikon Pre-Ai focus ring look) and was going to ask you if I made the right choice buying this lens. I have my answer now. Looking forward to shoot with it. Oh, and I got it for 300$ used, looking brand new (guess the previous owner didn't knew what he had :D).
Thank you again for opening our eyes and showing us some very high quality lenses that are way more cheaper than Zeiss or Leica (even Nikon). Looking forward to see more of these "rare birds" and as always, keep up the great work that you do.

  • @my9demons

Would you put Voigtlander 20mm f/3.5 over Nikkor AIS 20mm f/3.5? Skip the CA,vignetting and other stuff that is corrected with one click of a button :), i am interested in sharpness up to f/8,color rendition and micro contrast.
Nikkor 20 f/3.5 AIS impressed me with two things, center sharpness and subject separation at 3.5 (including out of focus/bokeh or what the hell is called). But that's it, i enjoyed the lens at 3.5; at f/5.6 and f/8 it remained sharp..mostly in the center, and i got weird quality from near to center, to corners.
Something fuzzy , like 3 images putt together and not synchronized, like a 3D effect. The lens was not dropped, decalibrated or had fungus problems. That effect got amplified when i used filters.

I'm considering the 20mm Voigtlander... Either that or a Tokina 11-16. At first, i was going to buy the Tamron 15-30 but the weight and size are prohibitive at the moment since I'm travelling, plus I really want a great portrait lens. I therefore decided to go with the 20mm and invest in the Nikon 60mm as well. Thoughts? On the Tokina 11-16 instead of the 20mm Voigtlander? The Voigt a better option?

I need a 35mm for my Nikon D700 and this looks like a good option. Nikon FX 35mm are petty costly even used! I would like to try their 28mm to compare with my much loved Nikkor 28mm 2.8 AIS which is pretty sharp It is manual only though; is the Voightlander manual only too? I am waiting to see if Tamron will add a 24mm to their new 35 & 45mm line up. Tamron is really delivering a beating to Sigma these days and though Voightlander makes good lens, I think when the dust settles Tamron will be the king of the third party lens fraternity. Let face it, Nikon hurried out their VC version of 24-70mm to answer Tamron's challenge and failed. Tamron got them bad with their 15-30mm and pretty much burned the so called " Holy Trilogy'' of Nikon Lens Legend. Wouldn't surprise me at all with all the success Tamron is enjoying if they didn't try to challenge the big boys with their own camera body, perhaps a super DX to square off with the new Nikon D500 at half the price...ouch!

+Theoria Apophasis Thanks for the ref. That was an option I had considered to keep price down as 35mm isn't a focal length I use that much but nice to have on hand when need arrives. I am more pro 28 when getting closer and mine is manual. When I feel I have all the primes I need would like get high quality 28mm AF, 50 1.4 AF and the best 85mm my budget will allow. Before those happen though the fabulous 24-85 is highest on my list. I would love to have the 24-105 F4 as my vacation lens. I tried the 28-300 super zoom you talked about...what a beast especially when paired with D700, and if it has the battery grip it a anchor. MF or not the Voigts have that cool factor. People can call you names, but they cant call you asleep. Thanks for your reply :)

What happens to a camera during Nikon refurb? What are common return issues that the cameras were sent back for? Do they reset the shutter count after refurb? Are the shutters replaced if the count is too high? Would love some detailed info on refurb bodies in general with anything else you can offer.

+Theoria Apophasis I actually like stealing portraits of people on the street, so ideally I need an autofocus lens (d3300 body), over 85mm. Any recommendations for this weird style of photography? Maybe Nikon 85mm 1.8 or Tokina 100 2.8?
Yep, the Zeiss is great, although my pockets whisper Voigtlander, if it has to be manual focus :)

      easy, 70 300 VR G
you need VERY FAST AF lens for such pictures, that lens is awesome and blazing fast AF.

+Trevor Thompson 70% isopropyl alcohol, 30% water. He gave the info in the 28mm video if I remember correctly. But you probably got that info by now.

Thanks for all your video's, really learning a lot from you. If you have some spare moment please view this link....www.nikonians.org/forums/dcboard.php#91689. To my untrained eyes, these landscape photo's are awesome on the nikon 24-70. Granted, the 24-70 is a zoom, but my question is, would the voightlander's in your humble opinion exceed what the 24-70 provides? I know the 24-70 is expensive, but if I got the 20, 28 and 40 cost wise I'd be close to the 24-70. Assuming that most of the photo's in the link were taken at < 50mm.

+Robert Gudramovics any GOOD prime lens (much less great) will blow the hell out of even the BEST zooms. always.
      theres nothing on that link
