  • Stephanie, the furniture gal, shows you how to fix your stubborn file drawer. Stephanie is demonstrating on an "old style" file. The "new style" lateral is the exact same process you just have to remove a small screw, which replaces the rail hook on "old style".

You may not have quite saved my marriage, but certainly simply explained how to fix a problem I had made! You gave me confidence to attack the edges with a large screwdriver and sort it, rather than rush out to buy a new one and ditch ours.

Thank you so much Stephanie ,The Furniture gal, I was looking for a way to remove the drawers from my cabinet (circa 1982 ) because it was too heavy to move. You're a lifesaver!!!

Well done. Bravo! Our lateral file had a single small screw low on either side which attached to the rail. Removed the screws and voila. Thank you!

Thank you so much! I recently moved some file cabinets and had to take the drawers out to move them. I couldn't get the drawers to close all the way. I had two clips that came off in the move and thought that had something to do with it . It was the brackets on the side needed to be pulled out further and the screw seated in the opening. THANK YOU!

Thanks, mine was a touch different. Mine had a screw on each side that needed to be removed first. But your instructions at least got me looking at it in the right way.

Thank you!!! I was this close to getting rid of mine and buying a wood dresser. Not very smart, as these are nearly indestructible. Thanks again.

Lateral file drawers can jam in several ways. For me I couldn't get the top drawer to a two drawer file to open. Eventually I figured out that one of the bars that go from one side to the other on the inside of the drawer had slipped to one side and was blocking the drawer from opening by hitting the outside casing. Because the other end of the bar had slipped out of the side of the drawer and dropped to the bottom of the drawer, the bar was wedged and the blocking end of the bar couldn't be slipped back.
The solution was to pull the drawer open a couple of inches on the unblocked side, reach down with a coat hanger on the inside of the drawer to hook the dropped side of the bar, and pull the dropped bar up. This freed up the end blocking the drawer. Slipping a hacksaw blade through the gap between the drawer and the casing bit by bit I worked the bar back to where it belonged and the drawer opened.
Just in case the problem you're facing isn't addressed by this video...

Stephanie, hope you are still around. I have an old steel cabinet, for legal size folders, 28" deep by 18" wide by 58" high. I don't know the manufacturer, it may be painted over but I don't see any identifying label. The second drawer from the top slides out completely very easily, there's just little latches near the front you bend down. But none of the others will budge; Hoping your trick will work. If you answer I can send you photos.

I just called and left a message for your Milw. office.regarding the possibility of finding the drawer slides for the steel case credenza's that i have. Have been trying for awhile to find these and today i came across your youtube page where Stephanie is showing how to get "unstuck" lateral file drawer. If you can help me please let me know. Thank you.
