- A playthrough of Konami's 1992 run-and-gun arcade rail shooter, G.I. Joe.
Played through as Duke on the default (medium) difficulty setting.
G.I. Joe was always one of my absolute favorite arcade games, and I have a lot of good memories playing this one. Back in 1994, when I was in seventh grade, we had a restaurant/community center on the school grounds. Nearly every day at lunch time I'd head over there with a couple of friends, grab a piece of pizza, and make for the corner where the four-player G.I. Joe cabinet sat. There was always a crowd around the machine so you had to get there early if you wanted to play, and I distinctly remember that no matter where you were in the building, you could hear the constant drone of explosions, screams, and orchestra hits over the din. We never actually got through it - lunch was only a half-hour long, and nobody ever had enough quarters - but still, it was always a fantastic way to temporarily put schoolwork out of mind.
Unlike most of Konami's early 90s cartoon games, G.I. Joe isn't a beat 'em up. It's a pseudo-3D rail-shooter that has you running "into" the screen as an endless barrage of bullets, enemy soldiers, and heavy artillery rain down. The effect is similar to what is used in many of Sega's arcade titles like Galaxy Force 2 and Power Drift, making heavy use of sprite-scaling to create a smooth 3D effect with 2D graphics. Though it might not be "realistic" by any means, it still impresses me to this day as much as it day back in the 90s. It may only be running at 288x224, but the smoothness of the animation and the tendency for everything to blow up non-stop means that you'll hardly notice. It's pretty amazing to think that under the hood, a 16mhz 68000 CPU is running the show, especially when you compare the game to its original incarnation: it's essentially a high-octane remake of a 1988 arcade release named Devastators, but the improvements made for G.I. Joe are so vast that the games barely resemble one another. Still, Devastators is an interesting oddity if you're curious about how G.I. Joe came about.
With up to 2 or 4-players depending on cabinet configuration, you get your choice of Duke, Snake Eyes, Scarlett, or Roadblock to play as. The game automatically scrolls forward, and you use the joystick to aim the crosshair: while you don't control the character directly, your crosshair controls your position, so be careful that you don't put yourself in the line of fire while setting up your shots! You have two buttons - one fires your standard gun and can be upgraded to rapid-fire, while the other fires the missile launcher which can be refilled by breaking barrels and other random on the battlefield. It's careful to not overcomplicate itself, but don't worry - you'll be too distracted by the constant chaos on-screen to notice how simple the action really is.
The graphics, especially by 1992 standards, are absolutely incredible. The characters all look exactly like they did in the cartoon, the backdrops are bright and colorful (even the underground ones!), and the sense of scale is suitably epic. When Cobra's ship rises from ground right in front of you during Mission 2, prepare to be amazed. The environments deserve a lot of praise for their sheer destructibility, too. Pretty much anything that isn't the ground or the sky can be blown sky high - fire on the gas lines at the chemical plant and you'll see entire buildings go up in a ball of flame, or shoot the stalactites free in the cavern base to crush tanks and garages. Everything goes.
The sound is just as good as the graphics, and it stands out as one of my all-time favorite Konami soundtracks. It uses the classic Konami combination of brash horns, synthesizer leads, and orchestra hits, and all of it will get you hyped as s**t, I promise. It's all super energetic, dramatic, and loud, and it's all very memorable. Throw in some of that classic old-school voice acting and you've got a top audio production.
I really wish that this had appeared on console systems. I have no idea why it never did, but this would have been epic on the Sega CD, Saturn, or PlayStation. Regardless, if you like Konami's stuff, this is one of their best coin-ops, and absolutely deserves some time spent with it.
Note: The last known revision of MAME to run the game properly is version .115 released back in 2007. I recorded this video using Mame32FX .115.

NintendoComplete (www.nintendocomplete.com/) punches you in the face with in-depth reviews, screenshot archives, and music from classic 8-bit NES games! - Hry
How did this not make it to the Super Nintendo? it is a crime.
Its infuriating that this is the best GIJOE game we'd ever get. Decades later...nothing even comes close.
Agreed remember playing this as a kid and even still do every year or so on MAME. Really disappointing the 2020 (Xbox, PS4) game isn't better than this.
They could just use modern day graphics and just put this out. I would buy it
Exactly. I think with graphical improvements game designers get lazier. All the best games including fighting games were still made in the 90's. The only hope I see is Arc System creating games that look 2d but with 3d models like GGXrd.
@@justinleach5023 It's not that easy. Even modern day graphics look like garbage. You need a company like Arc System to remake this using modern techniques but recreating 2d type sprites in 3d.
@@mrt445 I know. I just would like to play that. :)
As a 80s/90s kid and a G.I. Joe fan, I have no idea how I missed this game. I never seen it before. I remember playing G.I. Joe on the NES, but never seen it in the arcades. Awesome.
But wait, the Joes are hitting every Cobra enemy, my childhood is a lie!! 😭😱
They got some training from Wingman (Community season 5 Episode GI Jeff)
Yet another arcade game I knew nothing about until MAME came around because it was never anywhere near me or mentioned in any magazines that I read/recall. Thank you MAME for letting us all enjoy these games all these years later.
Same here. Played the hell out of this on MAME years back and loved it.
First and only time I ever saw one was mid 90s at a County Fair in a tent filled with arcades for us kids.
Cedar Point in Sandusky Ohio had this in their once awesome arcade in the early 90's. I immediately fell in love with the game and wouldn't leave until I beat it.
_Got to get tough!_ *Yo Joe!*
G.I. Joe is yet another incredible Konami arcade game based on an American cartoon that looks and sounds absolutely amazing, and it's just as fun to watch as it is to play.
Cartoon and toyline - The Cartoon was used to help promote the latter. (like many other franchises back in the day)
@@vgaoct91 Oh of course :) What kid didn't have GI Joe's? I used to like to swap the limbs between them.
@Turlough Freeman I was as a kid, yeah.
with all the classic games u post u deserve more subscribers
@@maxpower5067 Thanks, I appreciate that!
Go, Joe! Wow, what an amazing arcade classic, the magic of the 90s, on display! Awesome action as you blow your way past all those Cobra terrorists in amazing faux 3D effects, and after the destruction of their base, they'll KNOW not to ever mess with Amerca's greatest heroes again! ...And knowing is half the battle!
I remember hearing the Yo joe entering the arcades in Times Square NYC in the 1990s I miss those arcades
It's like hearing "CowabungA!" when walking into the arcade.
Same here man. First play land on 42nd and then the other one on what was it? 48th? And there was one a few doors down on the opposite side of the street. And finally the fancy arcade on 52nd? Miss those days.
“So, anyway, I started blasting...”🔫💥💥
My favourite Arcade of all time! I achieved the total of 6722 points in two full continous games. I finish once without damage received. This is one of my best moments in my infance.
On my 6th Birthday, I played this so much at Chuck E. Cheese, that I missed my birthday song from the Chuck E Cheese mascots lol.
Kinda like space harrier without the jetpack
Actually closer to Konami's earlier game, Devastators.
The instant I saw this in the arcades, I knew I had to play it. I grew up on the GI Joe toys and cartoons in the 80s, and even though the game seemed to arrive a few years late to really capitalize on the popularity, I saw enough people my own age playing the game that I knew it really didn't seem to matter. It was a chance to relive our childhood imaginary battles, even though childhood was just a few years removed!
Such a fantastic game. I think the only complaint I ever had about it is that nobody sounds like they do in the show. Like, at all.
I remember watching the show on WGN in Chicago, WDKY in Lexington and WDRB in Louisville.
This is a nice GI JOE game! I'm surprised it never made it to the home consoles!
Well, the earliest thing that would be able to run it would be a sega saturn, and by then gi joe was not as relevant
It is the old curse of arcades based on licenses just dying to time. If you think this is good. Check capcom's aliens vs predator or sega's alien 3

I don't know...I think the Neo Geo AES/MVS could run a two player version of it fine. The Sega CD was built to run games like Gi Joe and if you account for the ability to fake 90% of what you see with FMV (like Silpheed) it could be done albeit on a lesser scale. The Atari Jaguar, Panasonic 3DO, and 32X should be able to replicate the arcade without much issue. Especially the Jaguar and 32X as they both featured their own competent Super Scaler games (3 games on the 32X and 1 on the Jag).
Now, I tried to research what hardware was used to create Gi Joe and I didn't find anything. However, I did discover that Robotron cabs were used with conversion kits to create Gi Joe. That likely means that the Motorola 68K processors were used as the brunt of the power and if that's the case producing the game on the higher end machines in 1992/1993/1994 was possible. You might have to pull some software trickery but it is possible, I think.
Addendum- Now, there actually was a piece of hardware available to the Japanese public that could run Gi Joe Arcade full out without concessions. That machine is the Sharp X68000 personal computer that launched in 1987. It was a sprite throwing, number crunching, absolute beast of a computer and it made everything else look pathetic by comparison. It smacks a Neo Geo AES around like it is an Nes front loader in 1991. Seriously, look it up and it will blow your mind.
One of the best "run-and-gun" games ever. I remember playing this, and I loved the pace of this game. I don't think it is on any (past or present) console.
It was never ported to any console. Played this a lot on MAME years back though.
brings back big colorful memories, this one.
the explosions per minute in the first level, hah hah.
IT'S NOW OR NEVER.
This game is so popular in our community back then.
Not every day you see an arcade game that’s not only more awesome but also reasonably more realistic than its original source material! LMAO! Well done old Konami! 😁👍🏻
This isn't more realistic than the comics.
@@natwolf687 A game based more on the comics would’ve been cool.
i got the game back in 97 for a huge family fun center that i was the GM for for 7 years
Back when Konami was still good
Love that game used to have in in Chuck E. Cheese. Lol when I was a kid played it all the time.
Love it... My favourite game at the time at the arcade.. almost cry.
I really wish someone would rescore this game with the 1983 Cartoon music and then give Duke his original outfit and give Snake-Eyes his 2nd.
The DIC Version Maybe Good...
But The Sunbow Version REALLY Takes The Cake! 😉
G.I. Joe was originally announced as a last-minute replacement for acquiring the licensed for the upcoming Batman sequel, Batman Returns. And was looking to create an arcade game based on the property, just in time for the 1992's movie release. Konami had mistakenly thought that the license would allow them to create both home and arcade titles based on the property, but unfortunately, it only allowed for the home. In its place, they decided to use A Real American Hero by the name of G.I. Joe.
Man, remember when Konami made video games? And they were almost always awesome?
I have this game as part of a MAME rom for my SNES portable (Pocket S-30). Brought back childhood memories.
I might've seen this game once somewhere but it wasnt in an arcade, it was in a bar I wasnt old enough to go into.
I remember hoping this game would get a home port on the Super Nintendo back in the early '90s. Sadly, it never did happen.
This game was so fun to play in the arcade!
Why can snake eyes talk?
Probably the same reason Cobra Commander has a low, booming voice.
Those Konami music's + super scaler... Arcade golden years
Its a crime that this never got a home port.
It is
Imagine playing this game and hearing "yo Joe" every second. Would try me crazy
Man Konami rocked at 80's and 90's cartoon adaptations. So why can't LJN get movie and comic adaptations right?
They got Maximum Carnage right.
So did capcom
Amazing game !!! I spent so much money on it but it was so worth it !!! So many good memories while playing it with my Brother !!
Back when Konami could do no wrong...
Now...everything they do is wrong.
its a super scaler how awsome why hasnt this been ported !
Great game. With one token (or quarter i guess) you got minutes of fun. Also you could destroy most of the enironment. Great memories.
This G.I. Joe arcade video game by Konami, is based on the DIC Animation City and Hasbro animated series G.I. Joe: A Real American Hero (1989), off of syndication in the early 90's.
Baroness, its no time to laugh when your command ship is blowing up out from under you..
I think it never came to console because Taxan probably still had the G.I Joe rights in that area. Also it's weird the "GOODBYE JOE" at the end of mission 2 sounds like a decent Cobra Commander impression, but he has the not-Destro voice when you actually get to him
Sweet! love the sprite scrolling technique and colorful graphics!!! I just don't dig the zooming type of gameplay though, I'm a side scroller lover :D
I wish this was a side scroller like Xmen. They could have put some melee and ranged weapons in there
X-Men Konami reskinned with Duke, Scarlett, Stalker, Snake-Eyes, Roadblock, and Shipwreck for some comic relief.
YO JOE!
So Cobra Commander is actually a psychic?
I just realized the face Duke makes when he loses a life comes from the GI Joe movie when he gets stabbed in the heart.
Childhood memories. Too bad we never got Gi-Joe games on SNES and maybe at least PlayStation 1(since their popularity was going down, sadly).
But good to know a new game IS FINALLY COMING!! Imagine if this Arcade version got a remastered...
But oohh... We're talking about Konami... 👎
Let’s give Konami a huge applause for this amazing game they made in their prime. By looking at this game, Konami got the skills to manipulate sprite as good as Sega with their Super Scaler
😮 yes!! I played this during the 90s at TimeZone!!!
there weren't enough explosions in the ness version so they had to fix it and channel they're inner michael baye
4:43 - Tomax and Xamot dabbing on their haters
Methinks the designers confused Cobra Commander with Magneto...
Aaaaand just realized that wasn't the real fight...
Still, kinda wish they'd gotten the voices from the animated series to do this. It's weird hearing some of these replacements before a boss fight.
Played this on an emulator, but also got a chance to play the Japanese version in physical form at a Up, Down bar. In that version, you can take a bit more punishment with the Rapid Fire item equipped.
Needs to be remastered on steam
That is the only arcade game I ever beat.
man l love this game and many others
Snake eyes spoke😂😂😂
Oh I remember... I remember.
I never could quite make it past Destro though.
This game will put you in a zone.
1:37 Ummm....I thought Snake Eyes couldn't talk due to damage to his throat?
There was a place in time where Konomi was killing it, in the arcades.
Reminds me a bit of Sin and Punishment on the N64, shame that one didn't have a 4 player mode
I wonder who that final boss was, because it damn sure wasn't Cobra Commander with a voice like that.
Aaahh, back then when Japan knew how to capture the soul of true American heroes even better than American developers.
Funny enough in the actual show nobody dies while in this arcade game they blast the shit out of the Cobras
I have noted that you are uploading lots of Konami games recently and I am loving that so much, it is always great remember other one of the lots of gorgeous jewels by Konami.
I have always found G.I Joe to be kind of amusing and cheesy but I have never seen it at all, I glad there is retro guys that still liking it, I am looking forward to play this someday.
Can I ask you if you are planning submit a video about Gradius Rebirth or Contra Rebirth? I am playing them a lot and I have beaten Contra Rebirth on Nightmare today, I think it is the kind of challenge that you like, Alex.
It did harmed me plenty, but it also lit the flame of battle inside my body and I finally become a real "Contra".
I guess just like the "Contra, the "G.I. Joe" are realest heroes.
Oh I'm certainly planning on both. I've had both of them recorded for quite a long time now, so I'll definitely be putting them up. And congrats on Contra! That's a pretty sweet achievement.
Yo Joe
Love the got to get tuff yo joe!
If only Konami made a Transformers arcade game too...
Did they use the DiC theme?
Yes
Brillante ♥️
I'm kinda saddened by the drop in importance for my man Flint across the series, movies and games in the later years of GIJOE. 1985 was the best phase for Flint.
I don't know why, but I was expecting a Beat 'em up game instead an Space Harrier.
joe: booze here gl joe 3d game helicopter :) go up there
Octrocious: Good bye,joe! hahahaha! church!
YOOOOOO JOOOOOE!!!!!!
My favorite part is that once the enemies run by you, they are powerless to pose any further threat to you. Just like in real life!
its good, but SEGA is the KING of super scalers!
Were there other games that used this engine? I'd love to know.
cómo me gustaría jugarlo de nuevo a gi Joe😀😁
Great arcade game. I still play it as Snake Eyes cause frankly hes the only Joe that would actually go gung ho when needed. The only error is that they gave Snake Eyes a voice. Love the game still. Hate Duke though
Why such an old version of Mame? I played the game on more recent ones and it seemed just fine, have those lost some features that allowed a more precise emulation of it? Is that old version more recommended for other Konami games as well?
I remembered this game was very impressive for the time, but not it had a level of environmental destruction rarely seen in arcade games in general. It even uses a little 3D modeling in cutscenes, even though the mountains are made with some Vista Pro - like software and look very plastic and cheesy compared to the pixel art of the rest.
Another thing it gets right is to avoid making the bosses look "really" dead. You have no certainty Baroness, Destro and Cobra Commander haven't survived narrowly, ready to be fought again another day.
Newer versions don't display all of the effects properly. The most noticable problems tend to be the missing water in the cave and the platform/floor at the airplane fight. The older versions display those scenes fine. Afaik it's just this one - the other Konami games seem to be just fine.
Thanks. I asked because I know that a few other Konami games have some effects that aren't emulated properly, if at all (like some cross-fade effects in Mystic Warriors), but AFAIK they have never managed to do something about those to begin with. I'm checking other videos of GI Joe and, in fact, beside the lack of water in the Destro boss fight most of the cave section is horribily glitched. The lack of floor in the Baroness boss fight is not very noticeable though. How strange that it was formerly emulated properly - sometimes even the slightest change in the code can ruin things.
Since this is GI Joe, shouldn't the object of the game be to miss all of those Cobra soldiers, not actually hit them?
Interesting...there is some kind of message that pops up at approximately 6:38-6:40 during your playthrough. I don't know if this is a subliminal message or some type of error message? It might be the MAME settings menu because it looks like ESC is at the top of the message. Unfortunately, no matter what I do I can't catch it in time. It stays on the screen for one frame and it's gone. If you blink you will miss it. What is it?
Addendum- I suggested a possible subliminal message because it wouldn't be the first time I have caught something like that from entertainment made in the early 1990's.

GIJOE é do Nintendo 8bits !
Queria um remake
No music from the show?
Technically, level 1's is the DIC theme on repeat.
There was a GI Joe arcade game in 1992???
Not many parachutes happening on this one ha,ha,ha.
And to think, this is the best Joe game ever created. Pathetic.
YO YO!
Most of these arcades could’ve got an snes port
Definitely, but I'm not sure the SNES had quite enough power for this one... maybe if it had an SFX2 chip for better scaling? Hahahaha, I also imagine that Nintendo would require them to change the intro since the first scene makes Cobra look a lot like Hitler leading a Nazi rally.
LOL!! 😆

rad.
This should have been on the super Nintendo and Sega Genesis
