The rear lights are the original small ones the standard 1000 saloon had. They became square later.
Simca 1000s (and their Rallye derivates) sold well in my country, The Netherlands. The owner of a garage I used before I relocated had a 1000 Bertone coupe that was completely restored, very very nice.
I think these coupes were actually built in the Netherlands for a while, from Bertone shells skipped on their sides on special rail cars because Poissy was at full capacity with the Sedan.

It’s like a greatest hits of ‘60s car styling. As well as the 850 coupe general look I got hints of Alfa GT/Junior coupe about the back end, and MGB about the doors. The interior has a slight Europeanised Muscle car look about it to me as well. A very well resolved design, and I couldn’t see a bad line on it.
Indeed. The 850 coupe was sometimes described as a mini 911.
Only the front is similar.
I remember the big selling point of the Simca 1000 when it was introduced in 1961 was that it had a 5 bearing crankshaft - unheard of on ordinary cars.
I saw one of those for sale in Thailand in 2010, the seller was trying to say it was a Ferrari. Seriously, I'm not joking.
LOL. I had one of these in the USA in the 1980s. People thought it was a Ferrari. Bought in good running, driving condition with weathered paint and interior, $250.
What a beautiful little car I love the big headlights and the overall shape. Never even heard of one of these before now. Will surely get snapped up.

These are utterly cool. Utterly, utterly cool. I never drove one, but there was a time when "warmed up" Simca 1000 berlines were the Coopers of feckless French youth. Everyone my age who spent much time on France drove and was driven on many "warmed up" 1000 berlines. Simca made a hot version of the berline (the Rallye) and once they were a few years old, they were cheap.
The "Italian" references on the video are funny... Simca might be seen in many ways as "FIAT France". They were not, but also... they really were. It was an odd history. More Agnelli sleight of hand and fiscal cynicism. The Simca 1000 was in fact VERY Italian... It was built from a discarded concept for the FIAT 850, but with a Simca motor. Note the Italian name of the Simca director....
Truly a lovely machine that was rare even in its own home market. By the time it went out of production in the early 70s, it was also quite swift.
Thank you for bringing such a wonderful little Simca to us. Very Fiat 850 Coupe, which was fairly contemporary.

You may have already said it but:
Simca used to be French brand for fiat to export their car, because taxes were too high to export car under an Italian brand.
But when the E.E.U. Came out and the import were taxes free and simca was irrelevant for fiat, so they had to make their own car, and the simca 1000 was the very first real simca car.
When fiat see the huge success of the 1000 in France they make a new alliance but the simca 1000 didn't work well in other countries, so fiat keep all the mechanics but change the bodywork, and came out with the fiat 124, the very last model of simca 1000 was the simca 1000 turbo 3, which was weirdly shaped like a fiat 124.
So technically the second most sold car out there was a French car.

Pretty sure this is not a five speed. IIRC these use the regular 4 speed box from the sedan. I can't remember how it works exactly but the reverse is in a really weird spot. I think you may have mistaken 3rd for 5th and 4th for reverse. I'm not sure if they ever made a 5 speed simca box. I think they did a 5 speed on the later front wheel drive cars from the mid 70s, but that was after the buyout by Peugeot and the change to Talbot.
I think the taillights just come from the early simca 1000 models. The pre 67 models had similar round taillights, and I think the simca 1300 and 1500 models might have also shared the same taillights. Later 1000 sedans switched to square taillights, so did the 1301 and 1501 models, but the 1200s coupe upgrade kept the round taillights, along with adding another set of what I think are foglights to the rear (reminiscent of the early Rx model Mazdas of the same era).
The later model cars came with a differently styled front end (to accomodate the radiator), along with some small styling changes in the interior, and like the name suggests, a 1200cc engine. The 1200s had I think around 85 hp, it shared it's engine with the twin carb simca 1000 rallye models of the time. Furthermore the car also came with all round disc brakes, as opposed to the drum brakes that the 1000 coupe came with, another short coming of the so called "faux-sportif".
I've never sat in a 1000 coupe but I've sat in the 1200s and holy heck are those wheel wells intrusive. You have to shift your entire body inwards to reach the pedals. Such an awkward driving position. I didn't hit the roof as I'm not the tallest fella around so that was a plus, but the later models have a centre console, I guess to store your phone in or something, and it creates an even tighter fit on the inside.
The luggage latch is also always a scary part of these cars for newcomers. Most people are used to just slamming the frunk shut, but on these you have to gently lay it closed and then pull the latch again on the inside. Pushing it down just dents the latch. Not exactly the smartest design.
Sorry for my midnight ramblings love these little cars, one day I hope to own one but the constantly raising prices scare me a bit.
Much better than the Simca my Nanny had when I was a kid. I would think that was a giugiaro one too though but more 70's/80's flavour,
Very pretty little car, inside and out! I've not seen a rear engine car with the battery next to the engine before, they are usually behind the rear seat or at the front. Rear engine cars like these like nice soft rubber at the front to help with braking and steering, and well inflated tyres at the back. Excellent review - thank you very much indeed for posting :-)

I really, really love these cars! Nice review! Some things to point out: I think that at 8:05 you meant Fiat 124 or Fiat 128, not the 127 (the 127 was a hatchback), and the taillights are similar to the ones on the Fiat 850 Saloon. Cheers.

Fiiend of my dads had the Simca 1000 saloon when I was a kid - he loved it. Swapped it for the 1100 hatchback.............that rusted very very quickly

Lovely little car. An uncle had a Simca 1300 saloon in the seventies which had a similar layout. Very much just a box though . That's very nice.
They didnt stretch the budget on designing the saloons!
Had a Corgi model of this in the 60s but I`ve never seen a real one

Simca made some nice cars. I liked the 1501 special saloon. This simca coupe had very pretty lines and nice proportions. Lovely big windscreen too....
I used to work in a Roots Chrysler Simca garage in 1964.
We hardly ever saw the Simca 1000s we sold. They only came in for oil changes.
One of the customers used to nail Norfolk country road corners in his 1000. Five bearing crank engine and Hardy spicer type drive shafts, brilliant compared to the Mini rubber doughnuts
They also had Ducelier self adjusting ingnition contact set.
Lucas points were rubbish in comparison.
The Hillman imps we also sold were nothing but trouble.
Later in the 1970s my friend had a Simca 1501 and I had a Simca 1300.
Great old cars which were swallowed up by the Peugeot Citroën PSA group. Shame.

This sounds crazy, but the first video that I watched of yours was the Austin 7, I think it was a 1930. You had a long scarf on and the audio was quite poor in that it faded in and out. But that didn't bother me as it did some commentors. In fact, it was appealing and charming because it wasn't that slick, produced garbage a lot of posers are putting out. Even if they're not posing what comes across is that they're not genuine. I would re-visit that Austin 7 video and take what you can from it. It's very original. Throw a scarf on once in a while, it was really cool. It doesn't have to be your trademark but something like it. You don't have to impress me (or anyone); your content and sincerity has already captured me.
Edit: whatever you do your subs will continue to grow. Look fwd to 20k :D
Thanks for watching, I often notice your comments, always appreciated. Its been a long learning curve/battle as my stills equipment hasn't always worked properly for video and has even been faulty without me knowing! The scarf was because it wasnt just cool, it was freezing - there will be lots more of that in the coming months. I think hats are my thing.
I very rarely impress anyone but I always keep it genuine-this is me loving (or not) the cars. Im looking forward to 20k as well

Double-edit: just finished watching all 16:53 of 1935 Austin 7. Still my favorite video of any car channel. 16:00 mark is a warm finishing touch.

I do like rear engined cars in general. I wish that they were more common like they were in the 1960s and 70s.
The design reason for the rear engine was to place the weight over the driving wheels for better traction. This was felt to be particularly important for hillclimbing, and it worked.
Another interesting car that I have never seen. Mr HubNut identified one in a scrap yard in New Zealand. It looks like a first generation Fiat 850 Coupe and I am almost certain the tail lights are the same unit too. "Legs like pipe cleaners" hahah. Cheers.

I had a Fiat 850 sport in the early 80s. What a great car to drive but totally fell apart with rust. Broke my heart!
The Opel Manta wasn't launched until very near the end of the production of these. I think the tail lights are FIAT items, or, rather, Italian items that were also used by FIAT. My old FIAT/SEAT 850 saloon had very similar tail light units...
I suspect the 5-speed gearbox (if it is, these were renowned for having a very woolly and vague gear change) is probably not original to the car. The 1200 coupe may have had the 5-speed as standard, and the sporty version of the 1200 saloon, which was very popular as both rally and racing cars in period, certainly did, so this has probably had various upgrades from other vehicles. That's not really a surprise as, although these did have an uprated engine from the factory, they were still far from quick as the body shell was considerably heavier than the standard saloon so it's quite likely that the standard saloon was actually quicker in original, straight out of the showroom, spec. Simca were rather well known for breathing on their road test vehicles so any figures published in period road tests should probably be taken with a full 44-ton tipper load of salt...

What a lovely little car. It's basically a French Karman-Ghia in that it's a pretty thing with a tiny engine and rather uninspiring performance. Still, if I were to have a Giugiaro-styled car to drive it would have to be a first generation VW Scirocco. I just like those.

It has the same oil filler cap as on my 1986 Peugeot 505 Turbo. Which comes with a turbocharged 2.2 Simca engine.

As much as cars like this exude character and charm thank goodness for modern cars! It looks like you might be crippled driving this thing on a long journey unless you are 4 foot nothing tall, with freakishly skinny legs, and deformed feet to comfortably reach the pedals. It looks good from the outside though! 😁
Poissy build the current 208, DS3, DS3 Crossback and have just announced they will be building a Vauxhall/Opel based on the New CMP platform.

Build under license from Fiat...(my uncle had the Fiat version - you could see the road through the floor of the passenger’s side. The rust was horrendous on the floor pan but ok on the other panels) I remember a drive with him when I was about 6...
Not exactly, the saloon styling was based on a Fiat prototype that was a proposal for the Fiat 850 but developed in France with assistance from Fiat.

I think when a car is imported you still have to have one after the IVA. As this is with a dealer it also gives proof its been inspected for safety.
Although over 40 cars dont need to be but common sense says get any car tested.

I'm deeply disturbed by the fact I rather like that quirky little car as driving it must be a challenge. No mod cons, dials with things in the way, the horn in a place you'd never expect and what looks to be the most awkward driving position imaginable. Of maybe I like it because it's the same age as me and reminds me of me

Is it much hassle in the U.K to register cars from other parts of the world?
Not really, there are no restrictions to what you can bring in. You have to change the headlight lenses to right hand drive and then bring it inline with any age related requirements like seatbelts or rear fog lights, put it through an IVA inspection (easier if its over 10 years old) then through the standard MOT safety check and you're done!

@@furiousdriving I was thinking this may have belonged to a friend of mine, but in the meantime I found out that it can't be. Very nice car! I own one that has been upgraded to Rallye 2 SRT specs. I love this little mover, it can handle 110 hp with the Rallye 2 brakes really well and is even more nmble than a 1000 Rallye 2, because it is a tad lighter and lower point of gravity.
