I spent two days riding The Ultimate raising money for Cystic Fibrosis. Travelled nearly 200 miles on the beast. Sad to see it go; Lightwater Valley is going to find it hard to attract numbers if theyâre removing all the rides that appeal to anyone over the age of 10!
Iâm sad the Ultimate is no more. Seeing the ride featured on Jimâll fix it back in the early 90âs is what started me off on my rollercoaster journey. I joined the Rollercoaster club of Great Britain shortly afterwards and have been enjoying parks and rollercoaster trips ever since.
I remember seeing Mark Riley on that show in 1991. It must have been difficult doing commentary at 60mph. I first rode it in 1992 and joined RCCGB the same year. Lightwater Valley introduced me to RCCGB when I first visited the park in 1992 and spoke with one of the managers at the time.
Why did the BBC pin the whole feature on a ride enthusiast? He did a good job but he's not the spokesperson for questions like "Why did it stand mothballed for 3 years", enthusiasts don't know the inner workings of Lightwater Valley. Sad that the BBC led with the tired old idea wooden coasters are unsafe and he agreed with them at the start. I know he was probably caught off guard.
You are correct. I did sort that situation out with others who said this and there were topics mixed together in the same answer. The Pleasure Beach woodies were the heritage rides we need to keep alive. The Ultimate was the one that 'felt' unsafe.
@@Chall1 I thought you did well in your responses. The Ultimate was also a steel roller coaster. Like every outdoor attraction, it can't be left to stand without maintenance. Demolition was really the only option, sadly.
Wooden roller coasters are very safe. Yes they need lots of maintenance, but The Ultimate was not a wooden roller coaster. All roller coasters, wood and steel need maintenance, especially when not operating during winter. If a ride is stood for three years with no maintenance, chances are, it will be scrapped.
I'm very sad that The Ultimate is not being refurbished & re-tracked. However this would have needed a huge financial commitment at a time that family leisure budgets are being squeezed. The fact that the coaster & oark is on leased land would make it very difficult to raise investment capital against it đ
When Nemesis reopens with its refurbishment, that will probably top the list. Nemesis and Swarm are a close 2nd and 3rd respectively and Smiler just felt too rough during its time at the park sometimes. That's why I think Wickerman is my number one at the moment.
@Martin Porter That's true. The only park I've done outside the UK is Disneyland Paris in 2006. It's just not been financially viable to travel further atm but I am planning on doing some abroad trips
Think about it. 3-12. So 9 years. Apart from parents, no one from 12-72 will be interested. And if you have an age range of children, as most have unless they have twins or triplets!, older kids will not be interested in kiddie rides. Just not! And the parents will choose a day out that caters for all their kids (like Blackpool Pleasure Beach for example) Should cater for all the age groups as it always has! Just like in school summer term you see loads of school kids in coaches getting a reward trip. (I live in ripon so I see literally dozens of coaches each day through the summer term) Thatâll end!! Disastrous business plan!!
They won't... due to its footprint, where would it go? It was built into terrain so you'd either have to dig into land to copy the terrain, or build extra supports, plus it's MASSIVE... so the cost of relocation would be absolutely astronomical. It pains me to say as this was one of my fave coasters ever and I've ridden nearly 300 - the second half of the ride was INSANE. So good. But very very likely it's gone forever, never to return anywhere...
