    Frequently Asked Questions about this Ofe Akwu:
    1. *What can I use as alternative ingredients outside Nigeria?* Watch this video: czcams.com/video/Wkp2YV4Gyh0/video.html
    2. *What if I don't have ogiri okpei?* Ogiri okpei is actually made from Yoruba iru (locust beans). This is different from Ogiri Igbo: czcams.com/video/Y1jnSa5Xz1Y/video.html So use Yoruba Iru (very fermented ones) if you have it.
    3. *Where did I get the fresh scent leaves and palm fruits from?* I spent Christmas in Nigeria and brought them back with me. Watch my Christmas vlogs: czcams.com/play/PLuj-BP3hVVeTptdCmpEzqC4siW1Ed3mej.html I recorded this video as soon as I came back in January.
    4. *Does scent leaf have another name? Why can't I find it in my local supermarket?* These leaves are known as Scent Leaves (Nchuanwu in Igbo, Efirin in Yoruba), indigenous to Nigeria (not sure about other West African countries) so you will not find it in your local supermarket in western countries. You may find it in a farmers' market if a Nigerian grows it in his/her back garden and decides to sell them.

    Boiled palm fruit is very tasty, throw one or two into your mouth and gently chew to release the juice/ pulp, which tastes delicious and nutty😋 Roasted ones take the taste to even a higher level😉

    Meanwhile, my dad once had a stroke attack and ofe-aku soup (we call it Banga soup) was very powerful in reversing the stroke (no jokes). We can Google "the nutritional values of palm fruit" and discover how much the red palm fruit helps our neuro health.

    Ofe Akwu is my favorite all time soup for eating rice. I just had a discussion with my wife about my plans on cooking Ofe Akwu this weekend. I will use the palm concentrate since I don't have the real Akwu.I enjoyed pounding the Akwu but not pressing the kernels. Back when I was younger I would take a few Akwu from the pot to eat before pounding. I am not sure a food processor can handle Akwu. I will probably use spinach since winter killed my scent leaves. Thanks for sharing Flo and this Ofe Akwu is on point. Am I the only person who loves Aku? It is one of my favorite things to do. I also remember making Ude Aku with my maternal grandma when she was alive or even roasting Aku. This is one of the things folks in diaspora miss about Nigeria.

      Ewoooo, our scent leaves don die. Sorry o. I didn't know winter can get that bad where you live. If you like Nigerian curry leaves in stews, you can try basil. Else use parsley instead of spinach. Enjoy!

    • @Anonymous_Anon882
      @Anonymous_Anon882 Před rokem

      You can add pepper to your taste or (relative) distaste but really yellow habanero peppers (ose Nsukka) complement palm fruit/ogiri-related dishes best and they’re quite a bit spicier than red scotch bonnet peppers (to say the bare least). It’ll still bang either way but you might want to use hot yellow peppers (or at least a sprinkling of Cameroon pepper, the dried equivalent) if you want to maximise the taste experience.

    I just bought the canned palm fruit to make this. Does anyone know what brand of canned version they like the most? Should it say only “concentrate” or can it also say “cream”. I really wasn’t sure. Lol learning to make new dishes so I can surprise my mother when I visit her. She always cooks for me, freezes it, and sends it to me😭. I’ve decided to do the cooking for her this time.

    • @Anonymous_Anon882
      @Anonymous_Anon882 Před rokem

      I don’t think the concentrate vs. cream thing matters that much. Just don’t forget the crayfish whatever you do (whenever you get round to making it again). Yoruaba, Edo and Hausa dishes (and all them) can get by without but not traditional Igbo meal tastes anything like the way it’s supposed to without enough crayfish.
