@@CuzImAzzI never thought I would see a song about the crisis of social apathy being described as "shallow", but here we are I guess. What made you think of the song as shallow? Do you think Olivers Army by Elvis Costello is shallow too? What would constitute a meaningful song for you? Genuinely curious.

    • @suzanne5807

@@CuzImAzz I can kind of see your point. But this song has always spoken to me of the importance of being present in your life, and caring about society. The line "American businessmen snap up Van Goghs for the price of a hospital wing" really hits hardest for me, society places so much value on intrinsically worthless things (no hate on Van Gogh, but I think even he would disapprove of the amount of money exchanged for one of his paintings) whereas even human life is not valued as much as the almighty dollar.

    Love this timeless classic,
Post office clerks put up signs saying "Position Closed"
And secretaries turn off typewriters and put on their coats
    And janitors padlock the gates
    For security guards to patrol
And bachelors phone up their friends for a drink
While the married ones turn on a chat show
And they'll all be lonely tonight and lonely tomorrow
"Gentlemen time please, you know we can't serve anymore",
Now the traffic lights change to stop, when there's nothing to go
And by five o'clock everything's dead
And every third car is a cab
And ignorant people sleep in their beds
Like the doped white mice in the college lab
And nothing ever happens, nothing happens at all
The needle returns to the start of the song
And we all sing along like before
And we'll all be lonely tonight and lonely tomorrow
Telephone exchanges click while there's nobody there
The Martians could land in the car park and no one would care
    Closed-circuit cameras in department stores
Shoot the same movie every day
And the stars of these films neither die nor get killed
    Just survive constant action replay
And nothing ever happens, nothing happens at all
The needle returns to the start of the song
And we all sing along like before
And we'll all be lonely tonight and lonely tomorrow
And bill hoardings advertise products that nobody needs
While "Angry from Manchester" writes to complain about all the repeats on TV
Computer terminals report some gains in the values of copper and tin
While American businessmen snap up Van Goghs
For the price of a hospital wing
And nothing ever happens, nothing happens at all
The needle returns to the start of the song
And we all sing along like before
And nothing ever happens, nothing happens at all
They'll burn down the synagogues at six o'clock
And we'll all go along like before
And we'll all be lonely tonight and lonely tomorrow.

Hope itself is like a star - not to be seen in the sunshine of prosperity, and only to be discovered in the night of adversity.
The Lord's mercy often rides to the door of our heart upon the black horse of affliction.
      John 3:16-18
16 For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. 17 For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him. 18 Whoever believes in him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe stands condemned already because they have not believed in the name of God’s one and only Son.

Best "pointlessness of life" song ever... And hearing the lyrics now, whilst technology has changed a few things ("secretaries turn off typewriters" would be "secretaries close down their laptops" or something similar now, 35 years on), we still sing along like before regardless... The more things change, the more they stay the same...

This was an MTV fave back in the late 80's so it brings back good memories. I remember camping alone at Buttermere in the Lake District while the wind and rain howled. I was cold, wet and miserable and this song was playing on my transistor radio. Half way through the song the batteries faded and died leaving me in silence in the dark. Luckily no one was there to hear me weep.

The message of this song is beautiful. What I take from this is that we all lead different lives with different values but at the end of the day we are all lonley because no one could know you better than you know yourself and we're all so caught up in our own lives that we don't acknowledge the things going on around us. After all the heartbreak and misery that happens in just one day on this earth, things just keep on moving like nothing ever happened at all.

Especially the last line ‘they’ll burn down the synagogues… and we’ll all go along like before’ I’ve read a lot of interpretations but for me clearly saying we, as a species are still capable of an atrocity like the holocaust and we will allow it to happen again.
