Tabs and sheet music are great, but there's nothing quite like being able to play the guitar by ear. In this video, I'll show you how to use the major scale and a little bit of music theory to find the key of any song by ear! This is an excellent ear training exercise, and also the perfect first step to being able to figure out songs on the guitar by ear. If you have any questions, be sure to leave them in the comments below!

Hey guys, it was pointed out to me that in the original upload there was a small mistake in the scale diagram. I've fixed it, and this is the reupload. Thanks again for pointing it out! Let me know if you have any questions :)
Finally found someone who explains things in a way that I can understand. You're a good teacher! Thank you from an old guy that's been playing for years. Learned from tabs mostly back in the 80"s but never tried to educate myself. Thx again!
I have played this scale for sixty one years. First taught to me by my old German accordion/guitar teacher. I have made use of the scale, but never for the purpose of finding the key of a song. Thanks.
Glad I could share something helpful 😊
Thank you so much for the lessons!
You're welcome!
Great lesson. I have been doing this for some time. As a beginner, it may seem tedious. Eventually, you will be able to play just the first two notes along the G string (sometimes just one note) until you get to the right scale.
Edit: He mentions this later in the video.
This is a brilliant video! You've demystified something that I always thought was witchcraft, I can't wait to get this technique down. I must admit i was very close with the first example just by listening, I thought it was in the key of D, and i could really tell that the second example was not major, so I'm pretty happy with that much so far!! Each time you nailed down the key it was like magic 🤯
Glad you liked it! It honestly DOES feel like magic, hey? I'm sure you'll get it down in no time! :)
Amazing video, this video taught me so much 😁
I'm just starting to learn theory (after way too many years wasted with tabs only 🙄), and this is a great way to get my ear training going. Thank you!
It took me over a decade of playing before I started learning theory. You got this! 😀
Excellent tutorial. Thanks Andrew.
My pleasure!
Awesome as always! Subbed!
Thank you so much!
Another great lesson. Very interesting and informative. 👍
I'm glad you enjoyed it. Thanks so much for watching! :)
This was super helpful, thanks :)
Glad it was helpful!
Great lesson! Straight to the point and very informative, thank you so much.
Glad you liked it! Cheers!
So informative and easy to digest! I find it hard to play without knowing exactly what i’m doing and why and this helped break it down so much. I just found your channel and you have my follow! Thank you, Andrew!
Glad you found it helpful! And thanks for following!
honestly this is really helpful, Andrew! wish more people could discover your channel because honestly you deserve more subscribers. thank you for this btw, couldn't have explained it better!
I appreciate that! I’m happy you found the video helpful 😁
For any of you wondering 2nd song used in this video is called Trophy Wife.
as always, a short, immediate, and instructive video. Thank you for these contents, they are excellent nuggets of theory and practice.
p.s: can you write the titles of the songs used for the examples?
your videos are best
I'm glad you like them!
I do this while listening to music all the time now.
This is so impressive to me that I can't wait to practice it even more
Glad you found the video useful!
@@andrewclarkeguitar I was trying to find the key of bring me the horizon songs and after almost an hour I finally got one right 😭
@@HonestlyHolistic It can take a while to get the hang of it. But the more you train your ear the easier and faster it gets!
@@andrewclarkeguitar I will keep learning thanks to you :)
@@HonestlyHolistic Awesome! Glad I can help!
Hey Andrew, thanks for the method. This is really working for most of the songs when played along. What if we're in a group and someone suddenly sings, and how to identify the scale then? Also how to choose chords for male and female singers? (Low pitch and high pitch)
Brooo what the fuck I got it?!?!?!?!!? YOU ARE THE BEST!, this makes listening to any song so much more fun
Hell yeah! That's awesome :)
Good morning from la France in the south ,// she got a nice sound
Thank you for watching!!
Nice work. Simply done. Diggin' that song at the end. Can you share what it is?
Thank you! Yeah, I really like it as well. The track is called "Boundless Repetition" by Victor Lundberg.
Hey, very useful lesson, i think I'm gonna watch all your lessons :D PS: can you please share with me the song name which was in C# minor key at the end?
I have a question: when I look at the fretboard with the shape at 1:52 in the E Major scale (E-F#-A-A#-C-C#-D#-E)
The shape at 1:52 is a C major scale. If you shifted that up so it started on the 9th fret, you'd have an E major scale. Those notes would be E - F# - G# - A - B - C# - D#.

can u make video about how to know strumming pattern by ear?
and what technique are there for strumming
Great idea! I'll get to work on something.
I’m certain it’s different for each person, but how long does it take for someone to learn this method? When I say beginner, I mean beginner at learning by ear.
It varies wildly from person to person as you mentioned. But for most people they can do this almost immediately if they put their mind to it. The thing that takes time is being able to do it quickly like I did at the end of the video.
Please teach us all the scales to do this😊
Move the scale form up and down the neck and you have "all the scales".
This is really the only one you need for the purposes of this lesson 😊 as someone else mentioned, you move it up or down the neck and you have “all the scales”.
the part that is most difficult for me is just knowing what the chords shapes are
That's a good point. I'd suggest learning some bar chords since they can really be useful for playing in different keys without changing shapes. Here's a lesson that might be helpful: czcams.com/video/dYs_0Rx3CTI/video.html
what's the title of the first song?
Boundless Repetition by Victor Lundberg
I think I'm first🎉
You sure are!!
