As guitar players, we tend to think of scales in a box. And these boxes travel vertically up the guitar strings allowing us to keep our hand in one position. But these vertical scales don't necessarily lend themselves very well to creating melodic guitar solos. So in this lesson, I'm going to show you how to start using horizontal scales to play solos that have more emotion and feel. We'll primarily be focusing on the major and minor scales in this video, but the concept can easily be expanded into any other scale you'd like to use. As always, everything in this lesson will work in any key.
If you have any questions, be sure to leave them in the comments! Thanks for watching :)

Hi Andrew. Just wanted to let you know that you are the reason I bought a guitar and decided to start learning to play.†Please do stay on here and keep making many more lessons for us.â€
That's amazing! Don't worry, I'm not going anywhere đ Let me know if I can ever help with anything!
Watching this video is not wasting of time, I learned much here. Thanks Andrew.
You're welcome!
Good bless you for this man
I canât believe these videos are free, absolutely awesome and very helpful thank you!
Glad you like them đ
I've been looking for such lesson for years... thank you!!!
I'm binge watching your videos and learning so much ! Clearly one of the best guitar lesson CZcams channels, thank you !
That's awesome! Thank you for the kind words âș
Great class, you just open my mind to make improvisation â€
Awesome!!
Great lesson, Andrew.
Glad you liked it! đ
Very indepth video again fully appreciate the effort and time it takes for you to do these. I got a guitar last year and I can proudly say that 90% of everything I know today in guitar i owe it to you. The other 10 % owing to tutorials. Thanks again Andrew
âI know this is not that exciting, but if weâŠâ Goes on to say the same thing in a different way.
truly amazing....great lesson
Glad you liked it!
Hey Andrew awesome lesson! This is also really useful for visualising scales since you learn to visualise where the intervals of a scale are on each string and can later be really helpful if someone decides to get into modes. Another player who plays horizontally a lot is Andy Timmons, I'm actually currently working through one of his courses on truefire called "melodic muse" and he talks about this approach a lot and its amazing how limiting yourself to just one or 2 strings forces you to be more creative.
Totally! That's a great point. Visualizing those intervals is a huge bonus. Andy Timmons is incredible. Sounds like I should maybe check that course out too!
You're a talented teacher. Thanks for the lesson.
Thanks! Glad you liked it.
Thanks!
Thank YOU very much! đ
Andrew, can you make a video on how to come up with chord progressions like the one you play @11:28? I have a hard time making up something that sounds that nice when Iâm playing with looper. Probably, it will be a multipart lesson, I guess for this skill one will need to know notes on fretboard, chords in keys and some caged practice. Is this the road to success?))) Iâve only learned the notes on fretboard so far))
That's a great suggestion. I'll put something together. :)
Hi Andrew, thank you so much for such a wonderful tutorial.. after searching a lot and lot finally god sent you to my rescue⊠thanks again and waiting for more videos
It's my pleasure! I'm glad the videos are working for you đ
Great content, mate, keep rocking!
greetings to Sona as well
Thanks, Karen!
Wow, horizontal scales are more complicated than I knew. All these years I've been playing pentatonic shape 1 while laying down, thought I'd cracked it.
Hahaha đ
Thanks
Youâre welcome đ
Thank you Andrew ! Would you share the name of that Pete Honore backing track ? Loving horizontal playing .
Sure! This one is called "Lay It Back" from Andertons TV - Guitar Jam Tracks Vol 6.
Hey Andrew, can you do a video on songwriting?
I can! What exactly are you interested in when it comes to songwriting? Chord progressions? Guitar parts? Song structure? Different genres?
@@andrewclarkeguitar I would love to hear tips on different approaches.
1) If you have a vocal melody in your head, what is your process for finding a chord progression that will sit nicely under the melody?
2) Conversely, if you are starting from a chord progression what are some tips for writing a melody?
3) If you wrote a guitar riff, how can you take that as a starting point and write other parts to the song?
I would also love to hear about your personal process for writing a song. What parts do you usually start with and how do you expand on that to complete the full song start to finish?
@@AlexBradyMusic Those are great questions! I'll touch on those in a future video. Thanks!

Please make a video on chord and scale shape connection
This video should get you headed in the right direction: czcams.com/video/-DRhGmMhzu0/video.html
Hi Andrew, do you teach private lessons?
Considering taking on a few students! Send me an email at andrewclarkeguitar@gmail.com and we can chat. Cheers!
my fretboard maxes out after the first 3 shapes. Is that a thing or was i scammed of a good guitar đ
Hi Andrew, not really a criticism but the orientation of your tab shown on the screen doesnât seem natural to me. I find it far easier to have the ânutâ shown on the left hand side so that you can see the patterns as you would see them as you look down on the fretboard.
Hey! Thanks for the feedback. I'm still unsure on what to do about this. Because some folks prefer it to match the fretboard in the videos. If I flip it to the standard way, then the fretboard in the graphic and the fretboard in the video will be going in opposite directions.
@@andrewclarkeguitar Hi Andrew, I watch a number of other CZcams teachers and the standard seems to be with the nut on the left hand side so what you see on tabs along the bottom is the same as when I look down at the fretboard, when Iâm holding the guitar. Personal preference I suppose but maybe have a survey. Anyway, regards from the Isle of Wight.
