The political situation in US at the time. For me personally it's one of U2 finest songs, I tear up almost every time. I'm convinced they left the footage out to spare any problems with US government of the 80's and U2 being at their top in popularity at the time.
This song, this performance, this staging, this lighting, this song, this message, these men make me cry. This is one of the most beautiful things I've ever seen or heard.
I can't believe I was 15 the first time I heard this song back in 1987. I saw U2 twice in the late 1980's and the memories are still sharp to this day. There are no other bands with the heart, passion and soul of U2. U2 is unique with a strong blend of creativity, musical originality associated with a sense of justice and leadership. I appreciate these 4 men, their ability, and their reach changing the hearts of men by planting seeds of awareness in which one can take action. Thank you for being there in the days of my frustrating youth in which hope brought me through the dark days of teenage angst to the brighter days of adulthood. God bless you always.
'You mighty young to write such heavy lyrics' Good old B.B. King even recognised that four young men in their 20s could reach out to the whole world and having the whole world reach back!
Absolutely breathtaking, strong and soulful song. So much that tears are welling up in my eyes. There is full lyrics compiled from comments, if anyone needs it: 1. Midnight, our sons and daughters Cut down, taken from us Hear their heartbeat We hear their heartbeat 2. In the wind we hear their laughter In the rain we see their tears Hear their heartbeat We hear their heartbeat 3. Night hangs like a prisoner Stretched over black and blue Hear their heartbeat We hear their heartbeat 4. In the trees our sons stand naked Through the walls our daughters cry See their tears in the rainfall El pueblo vencerá (background till the end) 5. Mama-mama ayúdame Mama-mama recuerdame Mama-mama bésame Mama-mama rézame 6. Mama-mama quédate Mama-mama espérame Mama-mama soportame Mama me amas yo lo se 7. Mama-mamá lift me up To the valley beneath my cuff Mama-mamá lift me up But the ground won’t give me up 8. Mama-mamá claim my name Mama-mamá spare that day Mama-mamá you look so sad Mama-mamá I will live for you I say 9. I will run and not get tired Get up with wings like eagles I will run and not get tired I will surely not go easy
This has been one of my favorite songs since I first heard it in 1987. What a truly stand-out performance here. I can't believe it's been around for 30 years and I'd never seen it!
I was there but outside of Sun Devil Stadium. Still have the interviews they did on the local radio station and back stage reports on tape. Is a night I will never forget. Such a moving song from an amazing band. I was here visiting my parents.. I had just seen them at the Los Angeles Coliseum with 78,000 fans It was a spiritual experience
I am 49 years old. I love Pantera, Korn, Faithless, Hendrix, The Kinks, pretty much any good music of any genre. U2 were the first band to make me cry with their music. It's become almost trendy to dislike them. Simply because they became popular and Bono became a parody of himself. Before you form an opinion, listen to this song.
oh shut the hell up, saying someone became a parody of themselves has become a parody of itself. if you can type the same lame soundbites u2 can do whatever they want.
Одна из самых чистых и прекрасных песен, которая действительно имеет глубокий смысл и ссылается на самое тонкое - чувства матерей, чьи дети бесследно пропали, браво!
Whatever you think of U2 everything about this song should be applauded and more than anything everyone should think of the mother's who lost people they love to horrific regimes, no mother should ever lose a child and if they do at least they should know what happened to them, all my love goes out to you and your children, you aren't forgotten and you never will be, you may be missing but you are always in our hearts ❤️
Omfg! Chills. I've listened to this song countless times and know it by heart, but I've never heard the Spanish singing part at the end. Love U2 forever!!!
"Mama-mamá you dont wait, Mama-mamá claim my name, Mama-mamá meet someday, Mama-mamá claim that day, Mama-mamá spare that day, Mama-mamá support that day, No matter what they say, Mama-mamá lift me up to the valley beneath my cuff, Mama-mamá lift me up, but the ground wont give me up, Mama-mamá claim my name, Mama-mamá spare that day, Mama-mamá you look so sad, Mama-mamá I will live for you I say, I will run and not get tired, I will run and not grow tired- with these wings like eagles, I will surely not go easy"
This is great hearing these songs live. Back in 1987 I saw them three times here in Chicago. The year of 1987 was a U2 year. I would also like to hear a live version of Love Comes Tumbling. My favorite U2 albums/cd's are Unforgettable Fire, Wide Awake In America, The Joshua Tree, and Rattle And Hum.

This song was written when they visited the place where I come from people I know, the name is for the murders of the children of so many mothers that the armed forces kidnap them never to return them ... U2 visited those territories of the guerrilla In the northern part of El Salvador and were aware of the war in my country.
The Joshua Tree is amazing, no doubt about it. But this song is special, because it's so emotive and so sensitive to sing about these mothers, who lost their sons in a stupid dictatorship.
This is actually a blend of 12/19 and 12/20. The speech/intro is 12/19 up to about the 1:24 mark when the scene cuts to Larry's back, and then it's 12/20 from there forward. Brilliant rendition. Really hope they'll do a new Rattle and Hum 4K BD and include some of this footage as extras...

To me, the music heard during the remainder of the original “track recording” as heard on the Joshua Tree album(after the lyrics are done, all the way to the end), is a typical picture of a young married couple who have just lost their young son or little girl and may keep going into the child’s bedroom, sit on the bed and burst into a violent fit of blubbering(typical storybook or movie plot, as you would read in the short story “A Small Good Thing,” for example.) I know that has nothing to do with the premise of this song, but still, the way this song is so deep and even sounds so sad, and even towards the instrumental part towards the end where we seem to hear even “ghostly children’s voices,” is what also calls up the aforementioned vision in my mind.
I have this album, both on cassette and CD actually(it was released the year I graduated from high school, 1987), and I know this song is the last one on the album.

It sounds like Bono's guitar was turned down. He recognized that and killed it with some vocables at the end. Awesome. Also, this song on their album, the last song, is beautiful at the end.

Theres something very special about u2 in the 80s miss it
Talent, creativity, gifted. What a band. They just don’t come along like this these days. Complete package. Thank you.
I still find it amazing how a group of 4 men could produce such passionate inspiring music in their 20's.
James Coburn very special 20 somethings I always loved how smart they were for people so young probably why I got into them
Completely true
Yes. Crazy actually.
Bono was incredibly smart and savvy when U2 broke out. He still is.
They were at their best during the the Joshua tree years then lost it somewhere between 1990 and there ideals. Although zoo tv was epic.

U2 its not band!, it is a spirit, on its day, there's not one better than it!.
THE most under rated U2 song.
If you like this watch the performance of this song in Santiago during Popmart. With some of the mothers on stage...
Well said , can appreciate it now more than ever , still takes me back to that 2 lane road going to the river outside Parker as in 1987-92
