      Hyper RPG Just saw it for a second time tonight and the main thing that sticks with me is the MJ reveal. It looks like they're going for a complete reversal of the traditional Peter/MJ relationship.
      It's been a while since I've read any Spider-Man but MJ was always Peter's ultimate dream girl and the quintessential teenage crush. This time around I picked up on a few things I didn't notice on the first watch, it looks as though MJ has a secret crush on Peter. The subtle way she looks at him near the end when she asks him what he's hiding and how she tells the decathlon group all the things he's quite and then adds "not that I'm obsessed with him or anything". I'm very curious to see how they work this in the sequels.
      And that is one thing I am very much looking forward to, more of this Spider-Man. I absolutely loved the feel of this movie. I felt like I was watching this generation's version of The Breakfast Club that just so happened to have Spider-Man in it.

      Yeah when Hector was talking about how this movie lacked the emotion of Amazing SpiderMan 2, I thought of this scene. That was so freaking intense. Tom Holland sold it, and the director really made you feel the claustrophobia and the suffocation of the situation. So freaking good.

      That was one of the best scenes I've seen in a comic book movie. Everything about how the scene was framed was perfect and you can really feel the tension of peter the whole time. Holland and Keaton really play well off each other and is an interesting take on the whole dad intimidating his daughter's date. I hadn't been that unsettled by a comic book villain scene since the joker's "you wanna know how I got these scars" in the dark knight.

    I disagree with the notion that Spider-Man Homecoming didn't have stakes and an emotional core. The emotional core is Peter Parker. Also The Vulture was frightening and Peter was completely out of his depths and it showed throughout the film.

      This is the most emotional story of Spiderman that ever witness and I believe you guys were only emotional for those other Spiderman movies because you were kids back then... There are scenes in this Spiderman movie that delivers the most impact of genuine emotion because he seem to be a very vulnerable child that the others are not... Its like watching those old Batman episodes with the cliffhanger when a Batman and Robin is tight to a table and a huge buzz saw is about to saw them in half which as a kid watching it you're afraid for them but as an adult you just shake your head and say they will escape some how.

    okay okay OKAy it's Peter's movie, but can we talk about Tony's arc? This is a crazy growth film for him, I think. He's the father figure now that he so dreaded before, and he LOVES Peter, you can tell when Peter accuses him of not being there and he steps out of the suit. During the conflict after the ferry scene? CHILLS. "I wanted you to be better." Tony sees the potential in Peter to be just like him, operating in the suit, but wants him to embrace the responsibility that comes with powers faster than Tony learned how to. "If you're nothing without the suit" I think is this generation's "With great power..." because it's so central to Peter's character growth and kind of becomes his mantra. And reuniting with Pepper?? Amazing amazing amazing. It broke my heart that he was hurting so much in Civil War, because he was experiencing not one heartbreak but two, with Pep and with the team. And now he gets redemption by moving back in with his team, getting engaged with Pepper, and having a healthy father/son relationship with Peter?? My precious son deserves all the best things in the world, and I'm glad they're giving them to him, finally.

      And in the end he says "sorry I took your suit", you know like how some fathers when they punish/ground their sons and they really didn't want to do it but it's for their own good. I really felt that emotion from him.

    • @AlexLove631
      @AlexLove631 Před 7 lety +17

      I disagree about "if you're nothing without the suit" being this generations "with great power..". Peter already learned "with great power comes great responsibility" when Ben died. He makes that clear in Civil War with the line "when you can do the things I can.. but don't, and then the bad things happen...they happen because of you."
      "If you're nothing without the suit..." is just part of his journey, and was the mantra for this particular chapter in Peter's life. The 'Becoming Spider-Man' chapter. We've seen the classic origin story, but this was the origin story for becoming a better, more experienced hero.
      This was the first Spidey movie to show Peter messing up. Every other movie just has him instantly become a hero, constantly saving people and making it look easy. Peter gets his ass kicked here and it makes sense. He has no real training. But with experiencing more each day, he gets better and improves.

    • @whade62000
      @whade62000 Před 5 lety

      They kinda have this great son/dad dynamic because Peter responds to him even though he's kinda way too strict. You can easily say Tony's self doubt justified because he DOES give Pete a hard time and you can easily imagine an own child who'd feel unloved receiving all of this. And yet it does NOT go that way with Peter, it kind of works, so it's easy to imagine that Tony might think, I was worried about my flaws and yet, this works. So maybe with my own son, it has a chance to work.

    the part where Peter had a building fall over him and when he was screaming
    "SOMEBODY HELP ME! I CAN'T BREATHE!"
    it hit me that he really is a kid and he was about to cry and that was a good scene as it made me genuinely worried for him...
    and the fact that no one came to help him made it much better...

  • @JhoRPG

    about what you guys said about him refusing the avengers offer
    what I realized is that, what vulture said to spidey stuck. people like stark up top do not really give a shit about people like them on the bottom.
    even stark said himself, such crimes are too petty for the avengers pay grade.
    so spiderman wisdomly choosing to look after his own people, his friends and family was such a good character development for peter
    it makes the narrative say that idolizing these heroes is good but there are choices they make that are consequential.
    peter as a naive kid, little by little learns a bit more and hopefully becomes mature enough to handle his own problems along with the weight of the world

    I really like how they played the MJ card. I feel like they are saying, this isn't the spider-man from the comics. This is the spider-man in the marvel cinematic universe. Things are different, BUT, we are not going to forget the history. MJ is a really important character to Peter, so there will be an MJ in the cinematic universe. Just like Aunt May isn't old, Flash isn't a "jock" bully, but is still a bully. Tony Stark is playing more of the support system, and not the Fantastic Four, which is where he went for help in the comics. I'm loving it. I know it's hard for many of us hardcore, old, spidey fans to come to the conclusion this universe is different LOL. Great review guys!
    As far as having Karen AI. I loved it, and I think Kevin Smith said it best. In the comics, Peter/Spidey has a lot of thought bubbles and you see his thoughts. He talks to himself in his head, like we all do. But having Karen gives him someone to talk to, giving us those moment of what is in his mind. I think it works well.

    This is by far my favorite Spider-Man movie and has the potential to be the best iteration. And to me that is ok because I'm excited for the build up rather than stakes being so high in one film. Like you guys I love that the villain wasn't EVIL, but instead he was flawed in a way that made him relatable and sympathetic. With that said I want to say that's what I loved about this movie, the fact that relatively everything from The Vulture to Ned was relatable. I guess it's because of how grounded it was, and I loved how Peter contrasted from Tony when he was offered to be an Avenger. Loved this movie. I love watching these reviews and reactions. @Alpha bet Michelle Jones; but yea i like that creative decision. It allows the mceu to have its cake and eat it too. Peter had a romantic connection with a michelle in the comics and yet we also know that his most iconic partner has been mary jane so rather than retread old territory, they gave us something new while winking at something nostalgic. Mary jane and Gwen Stacey (my favorite) have had their chance to shine as Peter's main love interests on the big screen; It's now Michelle's turn while barring the iconic title of "MJ"

    • @KalvinEllis
      @KalvinEllis Před 7 lety +6

      +xShineyxDiverx He is not trying to evade anything, she's not "THE character", she's just A character who is given the same initials as some lame "wink" towards the audience. That's like saying Joseph Gordon-Levitt's character in The Dark Knight Rises was Dick Grayson just because his first name was Robin. I have no problem with Zendaya's casting, I don't like what they did because she could've either been an original character, or the actual Mary Jane Watson character, and yet she's neither? She plays a new character who has nothing to do with Mary Jane, doesn't act like her, doesn't even have the same name, yet "her friends call her MJ"? It's beyond stupid, why the need to overcomplicate matters? This is even worse than The Mandarin debacle. The worst part is that way they undercut both their original character Michelle, as well as the actual Mary Jane Watson character.

    I think they did show spider sense in a really subtle way, sort of like Adam talked about in Civil War. The scene when Peter is eating on the fire escape leaving a voicemail for Happy. Peter drops his food and the camera moves really fast to follow the food leaving Peter out of frame. It then reveals he caught the falling food and is standing on the side of the fire escape and he looks at himself and says "woah" as if he is surprised about where he is or what he is doing. Maybe my interpretation of spider sense is wrong, but I think in this moment of the movie his body reacted intuitively and with such speed that Peter wasn't completely aware of himself. This hyper instinctive action is what I think of as spidey-sense.

    I think you guys are confusing the 5-film deal w/Spider-Man. It's not 5 solo films -it's Civil War, Homecoming, Infinity War, Avengers 4 & the Homecoming sequel. That takes Peter Parker to the beginning of Phase 4 in 2019. No way is Sony/Marvel killing off Peter 2 years from now -especially when he will only be a Junior in High School in the sequel.

    Aaron Davis is the brother of Miles Morales's father, guys! Miles's mother is Puerto Rican, his father is African American! Another thing. They don't need to kill off Peter to bring in Miles. What if they did a Spider-Man movie with BOTH of them as Spider-Man? A team-up of sorts? There is an animated series where Peter and Miles meet each other and Spider-Gwen.

    @ZariDV Před 7 lety +1

    Great review guys. Everything was spot on. Personally I loved that there was so much tech in the suit because it helped shape the character. Here Peter is dressed in a multibillion dollar suit with what looks like even more tech options than we've seen in an onscreen Iron Man suit and he doesn't care. Yeah he thinks they're cool because what kid wouldn't but he's a simple hero. He asked for the regular web options and he didn't care for all of the fancy stuff when it came to actually using them (even though he loved the fact that they existed). He came across as the kind of hero who would use the bare minimum amount of tech to get things done and you saw that when he fought in his big fight scene. And I like the idea of the AI because 1) of course Tony would build a suit with an AI lol he couldn't help himself. 2) it was nice to have someone for the character to play off of in a scene where it would have just been him alone passing time. Or when he's all by himself with only one friend to his name. Plus in the comics he has little panels and thought bubbles and whatnot to show his train of thought, but the equivalent of that here was him talking to Karen instead of rambling to himself in the scene which would have eventually gotten weird. It was so entertaining to watch the AI become a character (especially now that there's no more Jarvis & Tony and Friday doesn't have the same spark). Lastly I feel like it made sense to have the parachute feature. Tony clearly feels responsible for Peter, particularly in the crime fighting arena, and I absolutely buy that he would add a feature like that simply because he took it upon himself to outfit a child whose power keeps him airborne and reliant on buildings and tall structures. The whole problem Peter was having was feeling like he was being treated like a child and it was because that was exactly what was happening in his relationship with Tony. Everything about the suit was childfriendly from the Training Wheels settings to the baby monitor features and the fact that the naming of these things (plus Tony's insisting that he be a small time hero) showed how Tony viewed him. A lot of these things don't match up with the comics but they're not meant to. The MCU isn't the comics and they spend a lot of time trying to make us see that.

    Hector; the issue is that in "The Avengers", the computer screens on the Helicarrier make it clear it's 2012. It's reinforced in "Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D." as well. Fury says "Earth had a visitor last year" (Thor) placing _Thor_ in 2011. Except Fury's Big Week comic places _Iron Man 2_ and _The Incredible Hulk_ in the same week, making them 2011 as well. Since _Iron Man_ is six months prior to _Iron Man 2_, it would be around 2010.
    The issue in _Civil War_ was that the two writers believed that _Iron Man 1_ took place in 2008, the same year it came out in. So they had Vision saying "Since the eight years that Mr. Stark announced himself as Iron Man...." placing _Civil War_ in 2016. Thaddeus Ross also said "These past *four* years you've operated with unlimited power and no supervision". (placing _The Avengers_ in 2012 yet again). So for some reason, _Spider-Man: Homecoming_ writers had their movie state eight years instead of four years and it just pulls an _X-Men_ move where you mess up the whole timeline. I expect this from FOX, not Disney/Marvel.

    *Aside from your awesome review* Don't you think it be perfect if the Fantastic Four joined the MCU. Mr. Fantastic could be the super genius that challenges Tony Stark. The Thing can have an epic fight scene with the Hulk. Human Torch can be that one cocky friend to Spider-Man. Invisible Girl can break so much more ground for women in the MCU. Also their villians are too perfect, Doom, Galactus , Silver Surfer kinda. They all fit perfect like a missing puzzle in a better way than the X-Men in my opinion (although it would be awesome if they joined too).

After seeing what Tony Stark was able to do with his team and receiving government funding and putting Stark Industries as the top provider for the government Norman Osborne gets jealous and becomes the most threatening foe the Avengers ever face.
