  • In the month of June 2023, we spent some time in the state of Illinois, the "Land of Lincoln". During our visit we caught many train, including two Amtrak trains at two different stations, along two different former railroads!
The first is on June 3rd in Kankakee, Illinois, along the former Illinois Central north-south mainline. The IC was known as the "Mainline of Mid-America", running from Chicago to New Orleans. On this route were several famous passenger trains such as the "City of New Orleans" and the "Panama Limited" Nowadays, Amtrak runs on the Canadian National-owned line providing service. On this day, we catch a northbound "Saluki" train headed for Chicago's Union Station. This train is being pulled by a Siemens-built "Charger SC-44" locomotive.
The second train is along the former Gulf Mobile & Ohio Railroad at Joliet, Illinois. Here we see a northbound "Lincoln Service" train departing the Joliet Union Station. At one time, this station was served by the Santa Fe, Rock Island, and the Alton Railroad. This train is also powered by a Siemens "Charger SC-44" locomotive.
