I was 10yrs. old at this time 1969. My older brother fought hard to stay out of this war and I was so frightened for him. I believe that it was a great song that came out at the right time it showed the frustration Of the young men that had to go over and fight a war, a war that did nothing but kill a bunch of people and accomplish nothing, , When looking at the video I especially tried to focus on the military men, it was obvious to me that they very much like that song and believed in it deeply

Nothing going on today compares to the Vietnam War, so any 'protest' music just comes off as illegitimate and whiny. I wouldn't mind anti-Trump music if it weren't so immature and vulgar and uninspired. Calling the POTUS a fascist or cheeto for the 1000x doesn't do anything for me.
I don't think so. Iraq and Afghanistan are worse than Vietnam. It doesn't seem that way because American troops are better protected and don't get killed so much, and those who got killed were volunteers, but for the people on the other side, it was equally bad, if not worse. "they weren't angry at the troops". That's news to me. I walked through San Fransisco airport in uniform in 1970, I heard many comments, not one of which was thank you for your service.
there is not ONE verified instance of American civilians spitting at American soldiers, sailors, airmen or Marines during the Viet Nam war. Not one. Look it up. Thank you for your service.
I can get Johns idea that people didn’t support the troops. But I’ve heard the stories of soldiers coming home in airport being spit on. Called baby killers. But we know they went for the right reason. The politicians is the ones that need that treatment.
As a resident of Vietnam i think its good the US now has a president like Trump. He seems like a men who would not have invaded a tiny weak third world country and cause millions of inocent families to die.
Unfortunately young people WERE angry at our troops. Our troops we treated very badly when they returned. Many were vilified upon their return. The healthcare and opportunities for them was disgraceful.
I'd like to show support for what Marty Smith has said. But I'd also like someone to give me some feedback on John's admission that he was/is a fortunate son, which is what he said to the gathered crowd that included Obama. What did he mean exactly?
The problem with that song being played at the white house is its loses its values. Somone in politics realised its waay cheaper to worship the military veterans than it is to care for them. This song was just used for one of those worship ceremonies. Those vets are still suffering. But hey they sang Fortunate son at the white house.
No john. People were angry at the troops. Where were you to think they were not? Oh yeah, the reserves. Still a great great song. Not too much of a stretch to say it amplified the sentiment, "rich man's war poor man's fight".
@@ricomajestic wow, clearly you were not around at the time or have not read the multiple accounts of soldiers coming home and being called baby killers. Educate yourself.

Well, even if he wasn't in country, at least he served, unlike Trump, Limbaugh, Hannity, Ted Nugent and all those other right wing super patriots, . As someone who was over there (Dan Nang 68/69) I don't hold it against Fogerty at all.
Thats a lie that they wasn’t angry at the troops either that or ignorance to the situation. The hippies was literally waiting for the troops to get off the plane coming back from the war and literally started spitting on the troops. Thats a fact. Let that sink in.
John is both right and wrong - the young people THOUGHT they were angry at the troops and they treated them badly. They even spit on them. But they really were angry at the war and the policy and took it out on those closest.
Unfortunately, the anger was directed at those of us who obeyed orders and served. I remember being told to remove my uniform before leaving the airport upon returning to the States. Dan Rather is a jerk!
Fogerty gets it, it's the POLICY, the PRESIDENT at the time, and POLITICIANS you should slam, not the military carrying out their assignments. Raging against the military is "killing the messenger."
Soldiers being "asked to go" (to their deaths) is a romantic oversimplification. Soldiers are typically forced to go through all sorts of social pressures, be them economic, legal, political, propagandic, or a mixture of two or more. If people joining to be soldiers said, instead of their oath of service, that they offer their life, limbs, and liberties so that rich men can get richer, that would be ugliest truth ever told. The second ugliest truth told would be when rich men don't stop them. The third ugliest truth would be when the rest of society, especially the mothers, say that they know war is all BS, but there's nothing they can do but pretend to be proudly ignorant, also known as patriotism.
Reading the comments here makes me feel old. I was in Schuster's band with John Fogerty, Doug Clifford and Stu Cook. Doug Clifford threw me on my ass for kicking a spoiled girl in the butt, (Melinda Smith). These guys WERE "Fortunate Sons" living in El Cerrito and Kensington. Yes, two of them went in the inconvenient weekend Reserves to avoid Vietnam and got out 2 years later. They all became millionaires and played some great songs, most of which were "New Orleans Creole songs" by guys who dragged the Main and listened to KOBY on the radio in the East Bay Area. I never figured where THAT came from but it was still good fun and had a great beat. Now all they seem to do is complain, argue and sue. Becoming a famous group is work but it certainly must help if you make it. There were times when I thought I would have liked to have been any one of them but not now. I DID go to Vietnam as an SF soldier and a second time as an officer and helicopter pilot. It was the best, most interesting , fascinating and worthwhile duty anywhere, which is why I went back. I married a Vietnamese, completed college and Law School and lived, apparently, a much happier life than ANY of these guys. Cook used to have a great sense of humor in English class. I hope he hasn't lost it in all the contract strife these guys have endured. I guess even wealthy singing stars can be unhappy.
@@rodsworld9374 Look at the number of comments claiming the war was wrong, you shouldn't learn about it, and leaving the country was acceptable because the rich could avoid it. In 1965 almost no one felt that way. ANYONE could avoid it. My friends on the football team and track teams got doctors to say they had flat feet and several became rich selling real estate. Many joined and just put in for jobs that kept them out of combat or joined the Navy or Air Force. For every 12 guys in Vietnam, 11 were in non-combat support roles and never issued weapons. They were cooks, MPs, worked in the motor pool, post office and PXs. Many were clerks. Almost every Air Force base had a swimming pool, there was waterskiing at Cam Ranh Bay. My high school buddy went in the AF and stayed at a base writing menus for FOUR years in Vietnam drawing hazardous pay. The same guys told BS then as now for Afghanistan which is Voluntary. My Hawaii Helicopter unit did a year there and a year in Iraq without a paper cut. Most made more money than at their civilian jobs and most will be paid PTSD for life. About 6.5 people have died there every year for the last 5 years. Less than bee stings here. I did dangerous work because I was bored and it was exciting and fun. I got shot twice but still didn't want to leave, nor did any Scout pilot.
I guess I misunderstand the lyrics but "Some folks are born made to wave the flag Ooh, they're red, white and blue And when the band plays "Hail To The Chief" Ooh, they point the cannon at you, Lord" Sounds like he is hating on patriots. I don't want to be a blind patriot and hail everything the government does. I think it's terribly dirty what they have done to the military people since the Korean war. After that, all conflicts have been by the Federal Reserve (Contradiction in terms). I love the Constitution and the theory of the USA but we are a long ways from that.
To John Fogerty: I'm not knocking ANYTHING that you've said. But I don't just "honor and respect" our troops. I LOVE them. And I've never been in the military.
Not angry at the troops B S, who are you trying to kid, love your music but the rest sucks swamp water. V.V. and proud of it...came to home to names and other, just like my fellow veterans did, as one song says When the Eagle Cried...

@Shawn Bradley Trump is practically the devil incarnate. You call yourself religious but you worship an evil clown, Sad sad!
i had no idea John served. He should have told the crowd.
If you didn’t know, John Fogerty was in the Army Reserves.
In any war in any country at any time when there is a war those people who are pressed to fight are never fortunate because many of them will die.
Too bad he doesn’t have the guts to stand behind his song. Guess that’s what 50 years of immense wealth does for you.
Draft is not asked. People were forced unless they could pay their way out or leave to canada or mexico..
The problem with that song being played at the white house is its loses its values.
Somone in politics realised its waay cheaper to worship the military veterans than it is to care for them.
This song was just used for one of those worship ceremonies.
Those vets are still suffering. But hey they sang Fortunate son at the white house.
The end part i agree with.. that's it, all war is, is a buisnes. No guns no soldier's no wars! it's THAT simple.
Giggity !!
No john. People were angry at the troops. Where were you to think they were not? Oh yeah, the reserves. Still a great great song. Not too much of a stretch to say it amplified the sentiment, "rich man's war poor man's fight".
If they were angry at the troops then why did they all protested and yell " hey hey LBJ how many kids did you kill today?"
@@ricomajestic wow, clearly you were not around at the time or have not read the multiple accounts of soldiers coming home and being called baby killers. Educate yourself.
@@ricomajestic my husband is a Vietnam vet .. they got treated like crap when they came home :(
We honor our troops no matter our political stripe.
Not.
We the People hire members of Congress and the President with OUR votes, and WE pay their salaries with OUR taxes: Give Peace a chance...."Some folks are born, made to wave the flag, they're red, white and blue, but when the band plays "Hail to the Chief" they point the cannon at YOU! Some folks inherit star-spangled eyes, they'll send you down to war, but when you ask them "How much should we give?" they only answer "More, and More, and More....It ain't me, it ain't me, I ain't no Senator's son....It ain't me, it ain't me, I ain't no Fortunate One..."---John Fogerty and Creedence Clearwater Revival, "Fortunate Son"
John's wife helped him do light duty, stateside. He didn't do Vietnam. I remember him picking on Bush and not a word about Willie Clinton?
Well, even if he wasn't in country, at least he served, unlike Trump, Limbaugh, Hannity, Ted Nugent and all those other right wing super patriots, . As someone who was over there (Dan Nang 68/69) I don't hold it against Fogerty at all.
Bush deserted from draft dodging. Clinton had a high draft number. I had a low one. I went. I wish I had been as lucky as Clinton.
But he gave those soldiers a sound track - that helped them survive the unbearable conditions of Vietnam.
You're mad because he's alive? Sad for you
Clinton didn't start an unnecessary war, like Bush did {with the UK and Aust}. It made heaps of us around the world, furious.
Thats a lie that they wasn’t angry at the troops either that or ignorance to the situation. The hippies was literally waiting for the troops to get off the plane coming back from the war and literally started spitting on the troops. Thats a fact. Let that sink in.
I saw that on family guy
John is both right and wrong - the young people THOUGHT they were angry at the troops and they treated them badly. They even spit on them. But they really were angry at the war and the policy and took it out on those closest.
Unfortunately, the anger was directed at those of us who obeyed orders and served. I remember being told to remove my uniform before leaving the airport upon returning to the States. Dan Rather is a jerk!
Sing it for Biden.
Selective Service will truly be selective if it comes down to that. Don't forget you have until 25, wait until the last moment.
Most of those people didn't know the true meaning. I wish John wasn't iffy about his answer here. He's trying too hard not to offend people
So what is the true meaning ?
OOOOOOBUMGA
Fogerty gets it, it's the POLICY, the PRESIDENT at the time, and POLITICIANS you should slam, not the military carrying out their assignments. Raging against the military is "killing the messenger."
oh i see Obomber and his husband enjoyed it !
The flashbacks are coming back.
right on, Dan Rather!!
He played in front of Obama and his Husband😅
2022 🌈
Every one in that crowd were forshure fortunate, they were high ranking officers, enlisted grunts are the real unfortunate ones
It’s great and all til the veterans start daydreaming
Laughing Bushes
Fogerty walking on egg shells here lol. Hey man, it's just a kick ass bad ass sounding track, that's it.
great song..leave the democrat bs thou..
in 3:01 there were obama

Thank you for your service to our country!
I guess I misunderstand the lyrics but
"Some folks are born made to wave the flag
Ooh, they're red, white and blue
And when the band plays "Hail To The Chief"
Ooh, they point the cannon at you, Lord"
Sounds like he is hating on patriots.
I respect them but I don't love them. Love is not a word that needs to be thrown around like that
Not angry at the troops B S, who are you trying to kid, love your music but the rest sucks swamp water. V.V. and proud of it...came to home to names and other, just like my fellow veterans did, as one song says When the Eagle Cried...
Is this English? It's hard to decipher this 4 year-old level English.
The kind of people who don't like Fortunate Son are the same kind of people who actually like Lee Greenwood's schlock.
