So all the rest can quietly adore him for doing so and stay put.

It isn't just his acting but his true character that is one of a kind, that face, his voice and his humor. He's not exactly a good-looking man yet he exudes a masculinity that is undeniable. The women literally adore him...go figure. He's humble amidst the fact he is Legendary. He loves his children, has an incredible heart and eye for true art and it's said his one true love was Anjelica Houston. She too was not a beautiful woman per se yet she had cajones! She was one tough lady and she put ole' Jackie under her thumb and kept him there! Definitely a Bogie and McCall love affair! For all his shenanigans off set and his rep for being a wild man, I’ve ever once read or heard of any story where Jack was anything less than a complete professional and generous with everyone around him.
He brings ideas but doesn’t force them on people, he goes with the flow of the set. He never steps on anyone else’s moment.
He is an actor you trust. See a film of his and you and you trust that you are in good hands. Yeah, there may be bad films here and there, but he is never less than mesmerizing in any role.

An actor needs material. The main reason this movie is so amazing is that Ken Kesey wrote one of the best novels in history. If you dig the movie I strongly suggest reading the novel. A lot of it is told from the point of view of The Chief. It is well known that Kesey used a lot of psychedelics. I have read that he specifically used some type of psychedelic ( maybe mescaline?) while writing the parts from The Chief's point of view to give to the reader a more deeply expressive experience of his style of thinking, and the haze of the meds, and the basis of The Chief's values of Life. While in the "hospital" The Chief was being given large amounts of psycho-active drugs daily. He might have had some ceremonial use of psychedelics before his time in the "hospital" also. This is an "iceberg" type of story. You only visually see about 10% of the story. The other 90% is hidden from view under the water-line, but still has an impact on your sub-conscious.

Good observations. To me, it's all about masculinity. The patients have all been emasculated by their mothers, the system, whatever. The Big Nurse continues to do the same, not realizing she is doing it...she's one of those people who thinks her "professionalism" is real, and that it gives her the power to heal.....but Mc Murphy is very comfortable with his masculinity, and is a natural leader of men....all the guys love his camaraderie. McMurphy dies in the end, but because of his courage, the Chief is set free, and discovers his own masculinity....running off into the woods in the end.....so powerfully and such a healing film....

A lot of peeps on here mention the book which is also quite a good read. Found it similar in a way to American Psycho (also a good film).
In Cuckoo's Nest Kesey writes through the eyes of the Indian character who hasn't had the most stellar education and so it takes a little while to get in to it I found.
In American Psycho Ellis' protagonist goes off into very long rants about Whitney Houston, Huey Lewis et al. This also in a similar kind of way took a bit of getting to grips with. Both good books though and a joy to be able to compare them with the films.

Having been put in one of those places at age 15 in 1971 for drug abuse where I spent 3 years, I could have showed him how to escape. I was quite good at it. His escape in the movie was the tree-to-the-wall "hiding in plain sight" version which works if the security is relaxed and you get lucky. Bolting out the only unlocked door in the place across the grounds in the dead of winter and over the 12 foot ivy wall before they know what the fuck is going on is good too, unless you're 15 and the police pick up the chase after you're out. In that case you better have an apartment in town lined up to hide until the heat dies down and you can head down to the train station, or, the Greyhound > Woodshole, Mass > Nantucket Island.

Ever since I was a kid, I just loved to act." Then Art said that this was exactly how he felt about singing.
