The story behind this message is so lovely. His widow goes to the station just to listen to his voice. Then it was removed when they went digital. Great to hear it is back!
*"Mind the gap. Mind to the gap. Stand clear of the doors please"* This is one of the most iconic recordings ever made and is up there with Thomas Edison's "Mary had a little lamb" and so is now considered a 'heritage' recording by English Heritage so is protected by law and a UNESCO Heritage recording.
In London, there's a woman who goes every day on the underground and sits on the platform just to listen to the announcement recorded by her husband in 1950. Margaret McCollum after the death of her husband Oswald Laurence, sits on the bench waiting to hear this recording that became one of London's most famous "Mind the gap" In 2003, Oswald died leaving a huge void in Margaret's heart. So Margaret found a way to feel his presence closest. After more than half a century, this voice was replaced by an electronic recording. Out of distress Margaret asked for this cassette tape from London transport company so she could continue listening to her husband's voice at home. After becoming aware of the moving history, the company decided to restore the announcement at the stop near where Margaret lives,at the Embankment stop of Northern Line, where all passengers can listen today and hear Oswald Laurence's voice and to think that eternal love really exists.
The story behind this Mind the Gap recording shows up on fb newsfeed and read about it. Am moved and teary-eyed at the same time. Curious as to what was on the recording since am from PH so searched on YT and felt relieved i found it here. Thanks to this person who uploaded it here. Listening all the way from Philippines.
This love story inspired me to write a song called Mind The Gap. I wrote it sometime ago but only posted it last week. Always hoped that Margaret would get to hear it someday…
Discovered the story. I wanna know how to get here? I am from the US and will visit Paris soon. I wanna take a train to London and stop by at this station.
If I’m being completely honest, I was expecting more of a strong British accent but maybe he decided to override the tendency to make it as clear as possible. beautiful story regardless
The accent is Received Pronunciation (RP), you don’t tend to hear it nowadays but have a listen to recordings of Queen Elizabeth. I love hearing this Tube announcement!
That was a Diffrent Announcer to Oswald Laurence, Whose voice can still be heard at Embankment tube station. I Can remember Phil Sauer when he was a Dj on Piccadilly Radio/ Key103 Manchester

They brought it back when the widow asked if she could keep the cassette tape to listen to at home.
This is why I searched for this - I just saw the article and wanted to know if it was accurate. Such a sad story.
RIP Oswald Lawrence, thankyou Margaret McCollum
Just discovered this story. Thank you for posting the recording.
just discovered this story now on facebook ad
The story is so warm. It's so sad but the fact that they restored it and started using it again for his widow is just beautiful.

His tone of voice just cracks me up. It’s so stern, I suppose rightly so
it's from the 50's any PSA/Announcement from this era was quite stern after all X3
mind... the geap.

love the story, but it sounds like he’s holding you at gunpoint like “MIND THE GAP. MIND IT OR PERISH”
I was notified on instagram and was curious about it
Nice video 👍
CiekWostkawka!
the underground’s slogan of mind the gap is in direct opposition to the slogan of The Gap which is fall into the gap.
I am here cuz of a Facebook meme
