Claw Foot Tub Plumbing | Free Standing Tub Shower

- Plumbing for a claw foot tub or a modern freestanding bathtub requires a drain kit and a faucet shower kit. The drain kit we used ( Kingston ) on this tub mimics the style of the original drain. The faucet and shower were sold together (ours is a Barclay from Lowes ) and function somewhat similarly to the original faucet back in the day. Both drain kits and faucet kits can be found on amazon or the big box stores :

The installation of the bathtub drain is comprised of measuring and cutting the waste tube and overflow tube and inserting those pieces into the 3-way "t". with gaskets secure between tubes and tub, from inside the tub the waste strainer and overflow cover plate are attached.
The process to install a bathtub drain is fairly straight forward. Installing the bath tub drain just takes some time to precisely measure and align all the parts. The bath tub plumbing layout is basically the same for the vast majority of tubs because most tubs have a drain and an overflow which route the water down the drain.
Most bath tub drain kits come with drain tubes which are longer and must be cut to size to fit. With some simple tools, the bathtub drain installation is something a DIY'er can take on with some knowledge.
Installation of the Barclay tub faucet hinges on separating the male/female threaded nut from the adapter as they are used in different places in assembling the diverter.
We also had better success using the thicker thread tape:

I have this identical setup. It’s incredible to me that Barclay and Kingston don’t include instructions, especially given the price. Shame on them, and thank heavens for CZcamsrs such as yourself. Couldn’t have done it without you. You’re our hero! Thank you!
Glad we could help! Thx for the kind words and for watching!
I my gosh! I needed this, no instructions, no help from the vendors. Your video helped so much.
Glad it helped!
Thanks! Without you and this video, this shower would still be in the box. 5 attempts including one from a plumber got us nowhere until we found this video. Thank you, thank you, thank you!
Hey @roxiekarpen,
THANKS for the super!! Much appreciated.
So glad the video worked for you! It was a challenge for us to figure out as well 😃
Hope the completed project was worth the effort!
Thanks again for the support and for watching!
Amazing that I came across your video today because the last time I did one of these tubs was about 18 years ago and now they don’t come with instructions as you say. Nice job by the way! And thank you again!
Hey TheJ….,
Enjoy - those tubs are awesome. They don’t make them like that quality any more!
Thx much for watching!
Really appreciate the detailed description of the diverter installation. I’m just about to do this job today and this prepares me well for what I’ll encounter. Thanks!!
Hey 7…,
Oh - sounds like a party 😃 - hope it goes well!
Thank you SO much for this video. I couldn't sort out how to connect the riser for the life of me, and the "instructions" were non-existent. I appreciate y'all!
Hey John…,
Glad to help! Thx for the comment and for watching!
I'm working on the same thing,,,!!Thank you for the tips!!
You got this! Hope you have success!
Absolutely beautiful setup! I want a claw foot tub so bad
Hey Joann,
Thank you! Of course you can buy new. But if you check Craigslist or similar you can find and refinish - bathtub refinishing / bathtub resurfacing do it yourself

We agree - they are a beautiful addition!
Thx for watching !
Thanks for the good video.
PEX is great stuff but it spoils the esthetics of the retro tub. Use some finishing rings to hide the protrusions from the wall.
I have and old brass faucet from a turn of the previous century house demolition in Calgary. I hope they are still usable. I might have to try to find a partial shower kit, or individual fittings.
First I want to beef up the floor joists and bridging before bringing in the cast clawfoot.
Hey leh..,
Sound like you have a real project - enjoy!
As for the pex - it’s only visible to the camera. In real life use, the pex isn’t seen.
Good point though.
Thx for watching!
Did you happen to film the part where you connect the faucet to the tub?
Hey Alex,
Sorry. It is just secured with the nuts…was not complex in our set-up.
Thx for watching!
Do you have a link to the shower kit you bought from lowes? Thx
Hey Natalie,
Sorry it’s been a while - we don’t. If you can’t find the exact item by scrolling their site, then you might want to see if they have anything similar.
It wouldn’t surprise me that they changed suppliers as we had quite some duffles with it.
Hope that helps. Thx for watching!
My claw for tub is already plumbed and working. Now I just need to install the shower including the curtain hoop. How do I attach the shower to existing hardware?
You faucet needs to have a verticle facing capped orifice into which the shower arm goes up to shower head. W/o that, you need a new faucet or something to attach to the tub spout.
Thx for watching!
So on the drain down pipe our particular brand didn't mention tape, it is leaking. Did you use tape on the spout joints
Hey @aarontaylor9874,
Yes. Typically any threaded connection gets tape unless it's a flared plumbing fitting.

Thx for watching!
Thanks. Not gonna fix it here not nearly enough to thread room for tape here. Thanks for the video and follow up though
Is your clawfoot tub cast iron or acrylic?
Hey Danielle…,
It’s a 100 yr old cast iron we rescued …

How did you connect the stub outs to the back side of faucet?
Hey Matthew,
If I remember right, it was a female threaded fitting to go on to the faucet with the pex going to the other end by either 1) a pex barb on the end of that fitting or else a sharkbite/ compression fitting.
Your big box home store should have one or the other.
Thx for watching.
Thank you for the quick reply! I'm currently hooking up a similar set up having trouble finding the right female fitting the male ends on the faucet should be 3/4. 3/4 washer supply lines spin on okay but all the sharkbite female thread ends only spin on about 2 threads and thats without tape I'm starting to think this faucet male ends are just a bit off.
Hey Matthew,
Maybe skip the sharkbite. Can you find a brass female threaded w/ a pex barb? A brass fitting should work.
If it doesn’t, you may have to return the faucet.
We did find that out faucet threaded tolerances were very sloppy - we had to address leaks a couple different times at assembly which is pretty unusual in our experience.
Good to know. Not happy about it, but thank you
Naked plastic feed lines coming through drywall? Where are the escutcheon rings? Come on...
PEX is great stuff but it spoils the esthetics of the retro tub. Use some rings for sure.
