I will gladly spend 3 to 500 dollars on a solid pair of Danners boots or Red Wing boots, and people think that's extreme, but the quality is crazy good. I will also spend 3-400 on a really quality coat or leather jacket that's just factory made and 1 of 20,000 or something. A custom made, quality, 1 of 1 leather jacket that is made capable of lasting multiple generations, I don't think a few thousand for something like that is that extreme. I wouldn't buy more than one coat or jacket like that, but buying one and keeping it forever and taking care of it isn't that insane to me.
