The concepts of elder god and such is introduced by H.P Lovecraft in his works, for his works. While they are often used elsewhere, they are in no way universally applicable. As such I do not think they can really be used to classify anything outside of that universe. I think trying to would against the meaning of the work. Wicked job, loved the way you introduced the cosmic entity, usually its an eye or something p, but this captures what a cosmic being might be like just to look at it.
Loving the cosmic horror videos that are coming out, the creatures from lovecrafts work are really interesting creations of the imagination.
Gives an idea of what our minds can grasp and understand.
Lots of people say its hard to do a cosmic being, but if you start with cosmic images and then work in the parts of living creatures you can make some interesting ideas. Like this one starting as stars and working into a soul eating hole of sorts, like a mouth without teeth.
I am a lover of these types of creatures, because of how they interact with he universes they exist in.
Really loving the shorts coming out with those creatures, especially becuse I have been trying to write and give explanations for why they would be as they are.
The way they treat humanity and how they interact with the universe, I can totally understand why most show monstrous creatures following or representing them, like a creature that howls and wears a mask seen in another short, I can easily explain why the monstrous physiology and why human's heads burst when they look upon some, I could use real biology and technology to explain how they could be real.
    Wicked stuff

If this is correct, then yes this kind of horror really gets me too, it's terrifying, and I can spend way too much time sometimes thinking about how everything and everyone we love will be gone some day in the next 80 ish years, ..... It amazes me how many of these short stories ,here on YT, are far more better than Hollywood's attempts. For the last 10 or so years, Hollywood had been doing " JUMP SCARE " films, which i found very enjoyable, BACK THEN, but after awhile it became to predictable and common place. We need more Horror like THE VOID and THE MIST. There's a few others that are escaping me st the moment.

    Nice short film! :)
The monolith and the surroundings gave me Lovecraft-country vibes, reminding me of the setting for 'The Dunwich Horror' and 'Colour Out of Space,' and that den with the trees that the monolith was in felt appropriately isolated and alone for what happens. :) The way the veins in the eyes MOVED like they were worms squirming around inside the eyeballs quite unnerved me. The overwhelming sound you used, the sheer UNSETTLING sight of that black maw opening up in the heart of that otherwise-beautiful nebula and spreading out at the edges to consume it, the way it looks inside like we're entering a gateway to Hell itself... It gave me 'Nope' (2022) rodeo abduction scene vibes. And "entering from Hell" vibes aside, the whole sequence even before it turned dark really made me feel like we're so small and helpless, like when seeing the wider universe in this way we are as leaves blown along by the wind. That sequence of yours really has made me wonder if written literature really can convey the same sense of raw terror and dread and panic in cosmic horror that this live-action version does.
You made the woman out to be quite a horror genre-typical Asshole Victim when she started getting sarcastic and snarky with whatever Old One she was praying to, and I figured in that moment that the thing was answering her prayer to PUNISH her - she and others like her were kept from the truth as a blessing. :)

    • @MattSears
      @MattSears  Před 8 měsíci +3

Thanks so much for watching and this awesome response!! Really appreciate the time you took to write this. I also really like your interpretation of the ending - hiding the truth as a blessing, is a really nice take!!
I wasn't originally thinking of the deity/god as particularly vengeful, it's more that just simply being in the presence of something so beyond our reality and understanding is enough to tear her apart mentally and physically. But, I like to leave my films open to be interpretation because it's always really nice to hear peoples different responses!

as a fervent admirer of cosmic and lovecraftian horror, i very much appreciated the focused, well-acted simplicity of this piece. however, i was a bit disappointed by how the ending was delivered (i.e., the visual transformation). the exquisite promise of this genre is that there are realities too vast and incomprehensible to be held within our feeble human minds, no matter how wise and powerful we imagine ourselves to be.
this concept alone is enough to instil profound existential terror; forcible exposure to their awful, naked forms are sure to crush the soul and drive one mad. to deliver this dreadful unto a newly-grieving widow, her heart laid bare as she pleads with her until-now-unchallenged source of spiritual strength, is traumatic and terrifying in itself, without need of crude visual reinforcement.
in her hour of greatest need, her faith has been confirmed outright as she is touched by the hand of god.... only to discover that god is in truth utterly incomprehensible, bitterly cold... and terrifyingly malevolent.
perhaps a bit of abject terror and bleeding-from-the-ears would have sufficed. regardless, good job.

Cheers! Yeah I could have held back a little on the physical effects a little. I'm a big fan of body horror also so wanted to infuse a little of that in there too. Quite often cosmic horror and body horror seem to go hand in hand.
Originally The God was going to have even more of a presence in this world, but it started diluting the idea a bit so I stripped that back. But I did like the idea of seeing something so terrifying/powerful that it has a drastic physical effect. But you're right, it could have worked either way.
