DELIGHTFUL! Bashkirov is one of the best pianist but I guess that his role as a professor has overshadowed his career as a soloist. He is just terrific... beautiful musical nuances.

Hey what's with the timpani roll right at the end ? Have never heard anybody else do that and it spoils that heart-stopping moment when the piano resonates with the orchestra silent.

Does not come close to Ashkenazy's; it has no line, no continuity, and is all in small sections (each one beautiful in itself). Of course, there are many who will not understand what I am referring to, and that is a pity.

What a bunch of bull !!! His tone and frazing is so much more beautiful! Great performance!

finepianos Many are satisfied with piano-playing on a high level, but there others who need great music-making as the reason for playing the instrument as well as possible; Bashkirov always contented himself with “mere” high-level piano-playing, without really understanding the actual music. A waste of ability.

@@EmptyVee00000 Sorry, what do you mean saying "really understanding"?

@@user-ep3kc7gv2y He probably meant around 2:00, 2:10 onwards it's especially obvious, and at 5:50 where the notes don't melt together like a cloud, but are discrete. Heinrich Neuhaus would've lectured him on that for sure (check that 1h video of him lecturing some poor girl endlessly on Chopin). Otherwise, the buildups and climaxes in the 1st movement are quite good actually.
