Today we went on a day trip from Shanghai and explored Zhujiajiao, an ancient water town.
There was tons to see, but we recommend NOT visiting during the weekend like we did, it was pretty crowded...

As cute and interesting Zhujiajiao is! We recommend not going on the weekend, it was super busy! Has anyone else been to any of the Water Towns in China?

I come from Shanghai and have some ideas about water town. Shanghai belongs to the culture circle Wu吴, which is famous for water towns like you saw today.
Zhujiajiao朱家角 is only a small local water town which is not famous at all.
The most famous water towns are listed below:(All near Shanghai)
      czcams.com/video/3wMLN2yqnQA/video.html
      czcams.com/video/PeWZp48vMIc/video.html
      czcams.com/video/gIwdX9wa5KY/video.html
      czcams.com/video/MbgFTzgp6CE/video.html
      5. 南浔 Nan Xun(Zhe Jiang Province, Hu Zhou City,浙江省湖州市 )
      czcams.com/video/EyGlPvXHNME/video.html
      czcams.com/video/MijI6_k_SN8/video.html
When I were you, I would plan my next destination to Su Zhou City苏州 in Jiansu Province江苏省. Shanghai is only the economical center but lack of history and therefore not wonderful for tourists.

Tangyuan or Rice Ball coming with various sizes and ingredients. You can easily find them in Asian grocery store here in US. My favorite breakfast in winter, partially because it reminds me my childhood memory (It was really hard to buy black sesame and sticky rice in northern China back 70 and 80's)

There r so many much better water towns near Shanghai...wuzhen n xitang...as for the sesame “dumpling” , it’s called tangyuan, it used to be traditional food for the end of spring festival. N if u like the gardens, Suzhou is the city u shld go, it’s 20 minutes by bullet train from Shanghai, which is known as the “heavenly-like city”. As for the soup dumplings, xiaolongbao, the best n most famous one is in the city god temple alleys, which is near jade garden. There r many many snacks n street food in the alleys inside the open malls. As for the fresh meat dumpling u mentioned, I guess u were referring to shengjianbao, a kind of fried bun with fresh meat or shrimp or crab meat filling inside, u can find it in any chain shops in the city.

The ancient city of Suzhou borders Shanghai to the East and Taihu Lake to the west. It is a bright pearl in the Yangtze River Delta. The annual average temperature is 15.7 C. It belongs to the temperate zone. It has obvious mild and humid climate characteristics with distinct seasons. It belongs to the plain hilly area. The ancient city covers an area of 14.2 square kilometers, narrow in East and west, wide in North and south, and is rectangular. There are two moats around the city, including seven water and land gates and one land gate. Although most of the old walls were destroyed and the gates were demolished, the oldest Panmen Shuilu Gate remained intact, and the moats, alleys and alleys could still be seen in parallel. There are many rivers in Suzhou city with a total length of 35 kilometers. There are 186 arch bridges and girder bridges on these wide and narrow rivers. So after the 13th century Italian travelers Marco and Polo traveled through Suzhou, they called Suzhou "Venice of the East", and this reputation has been used ever since.

Zhouzhuang is the largest and most beautiful ancient water town in Suzhou. There are many ancient water towns in Suzhou, so she is called Oriental Venice. You can come to Suzhou. Not a criticism. This is a typical video on sightseeing tour presented by westerners. The host is front and center occupying 80% of the scenery which serves as the backdrop. One sees a lot of the host every he/she goes. For viewer the narrator is best sitting on the side with the back toward the camera describing and sharing the scenery with the viewers. It is understood that the western mindset is the individual is the center of the universe whereas in the East man is a part of the world. Thus the difference in emphasis.
